Faux Sushi Recipe

This is another post from my old blog that I'm sharing - Faux Sushi!

It was for a campaign I did with FruitaBu, but you can really use any type of fruit rolls.

They turned out to be so much fun to both make and eat!

The boys helped putting the fish and licorice on and in the "sushi," and they couldn't wait to eat them!

Faux Sushi

Ingredients:
  • 6 c puffed rice cereal
  • 4 c miniature marshmallows
  • 4 T butter
  • 2 boxes of FruitaBü Fruit Rolls
  • A variety of candy: cherry twists (such as Twizzlers), gummy worms, licorice and Swedish fish
Directions:
  • In a small saucepan, melt the marshmallows with the butter over low heat.
  • Stir in the rice cereal until coated.
  • Pour the mixture into a greased pan, flatten, and cut into small rectangles, or mold into rolls.
  • Get creative to make the "sushi" - add Swedish fish on top or licorice in the center, wrapping each piece with slices of fruit rolls to act as the seaweed.

Honolulu Cookie Company's Pumpkin and White Chocolate Pumpkin Cookies

Disclosure: Complimentary product received.

`Tis the season for all things pumpkin!

I love it whenever Honolulu Cookie Company releases new collections and flavors, and just in time for Fall are two new shortbread cookie flavors:  Pumpkin and White Chocolate Pumpkin.

I was fortunate to receive a Fall Pumpkin Box (it resembles a cute pumpkin!), which includes 3 cookies of each new flavor (a Fall Window Box with 12 cookies in 4 flavors is also available).

I really enjoyed both cookies, each reminiscent of some of my favorite fall desserts. You can just smell the cinnamon and nutmeg as you open each cookie! I loved the White Chocolate-dipped cookie. The creamy chocolate adds another layer of sweetness that's just irresistible!

Visit www.honolulucookie.com for more information on the new flavors, or to view their entire collection.

Instagram CampaignHonolulu Cookie Company is celebrating their new pumpkin flavors with a special "#AlohaPumpkin" Instagram campaign. Beginning September 14 and continuing through October 31, customers who post a picture on Instagram with the hashtag "#AlohaPumpkin" and show it to a Honolulu Cookie Company employee at any retail location will receive two free pumpkin cookies.

Cranberry Cream Cheese Bars Recipe

It's been a long while since I made Cranberry Cream Cheese Bars.  At one point in time, I'd make them multiple times a year for gatherings.

I just bought some cranberry sauce, and I plan on making them again soon.

It's the perfect recipe for the upcoming holidays!

Cranberry Cream Cheese Bars

Ingredients
  • 2 c flour
  • 1 1/2 c rolled oats
  • 3/4 c plus 1 T firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 c butter, softened
  • 1 (8 oz.) pkg cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (14 oz.) can Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1/4 c lemon juice
  • 2 T cornstarch
  • 1 (16 oz.) can whole berry cranberry sauce
Directions:
  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Mix together the flour, oats, 3/4 cup brown sugar and butter in large bowl until coarse crumbs are formed.
  • Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the crumb mixture; press remainder firmly onto bottom of prepared 9x13 pan.
  • Bake 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, mix together the cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk until smooth.
  • Stir in lemon juice.
  • Spread cream cheese mixture over partially baked crust.
  • Combine remaining 1 tablespoon brown sugar and cornstarch in small bowl; stir in cranberry sauce.
  • Spread evenly over cream cheese layer.
  • Top with reserved crumb mixture.
  • Bake 40 minutes or until golden brown.

Storks Movie Review - Now in Theaters!

Storks (rated PG) is now in theaters!

Synopsis:
Storks deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for a global internet retail giant. Junior (Andy Samberg), the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl.

Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.
Hawaii Dad Review:
In Storks, Andy Samberg voices Junior, the top delivery stork at Cornerstone, an Amazon-like business of storks that ceased delivering babies in favor of delivering goods to improve their bottom line. Junior is in line to be promoted when his boss, Hunter (Kelsey Grammer),  tasks him with firing the sole human at Cornerstone in order to be promoted.

That human is eighteen-year old Tulip (Katie Crown), the last baby ever made by the company.  Junior is too kind-hearted to fire the accident-prone, but good intentioned Tulip, so he instead assigns her to the mail room, instructing her to never leave.

However, a baby request letter gets processed, resulting in the "production" of a baby, and  Junior and Tulip start out on a mission to deliver the baby to its family.

The movie jumps between the story of Junior and Tulip to that of a family made up of busy realtor parents (Ty Burell and Jennifer Aniston) and their neglected son, Nate (Anton Starkman).

Nate sent the baby request letter after finding old brochure for the Cornerstone baby delivery service. Nate designs modifications to the family's house to better receive a stork-delivered baby (think giant bulls eye and slide from rooftop to open window). Although his parents believe that the baby delivery service will not come through, they eventually help Nate bring his designs to life, while enjoying the long overdue family-bonding experience.

Storks took a little while to kick into gear, but when Junior and Tulip, with baby in tow, start on their search for the family, the movie gets a substantial boost and a lot of laughs.

Along with the laughs was the message – family, in whatever shape or form, is important.

I was pleasantly surprised by Storks, and my son loved it, as was evident by his constant laughter throughout the movie.

Hula Pie at Hula Grill Waikiki

Hula Grill is one of my favorite spots to dine in Waikiki, whether for breakfast, brunchdinner, or even just dessert.

That's right, dessert.  The restaurant has a great selection of desserts, but a must-try is the Hula Pie.

The Hula Pie (chocolate cookie crust, macadamia nut ice cream, hot fudge, macadamia nuts, and whipped cream) is offered in monthly specialty flavors, and is definitely a treat meant to be shared!

New Location: Tacos Zarate

Back in 2011, I wrote about Paul Zarate's pop up at Prima in Kailua. Back then, he was doing business as Zaratez Mexicatessen, and he was primarily working out of a food truck and at farmer's markets.

Since then, he opened his first brick-and-mortar on South King Street, and just last week he moved over his brick-and-mortar to Kahala in the space formerly occupied by Honolulu Burger Company (under the H-1 freeway next to Kahala Nails and Lam's Chinese Garden).

I recently popped in for a quick lunch with a friend to check out his new dig and I'm liking it a lot better than his former location. There's a lot of free parking, and it's a lot more spacious.

The menu is pretty simple and straightforward - burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and alambres.

I was in the mood for something light, so I went with a fish taco, which comes with a handful of chips and salsa.  It was the perfect size since I had eaten a small lunch a few hours prior.

My friend ordered the quesadilla with chicken. I sampled a piece and liked it, but if I were to come here again I'd stick with the fish taco or try the alambre.
