Visit Indiana: Michael Jackson's Childhood Home

As we drove from Michigan to Illinois, we had to pass through Indiana.  Since one of my kids is a Michael Jackson fan (who isn't?), we decided to make a stop at Michael Jackson's Childhood Home.

When we got to the home in Gary, Indiana, there were a few other visitors.

We took photos of the home and the street signs.

There is not much else to see, but it really is a must-stop for Michael Jackson fans.

The home is right in the middle of a neighborhood, so be respectful of the neighboring homes.

Visit Indiana: Notre Dame

While on the road trip from Michigan to Illinois, we drove through Indiana, and stopped at the University of Notre Dame (which is actually a football rival - #fighton!).

We stopped in the book store, then walked through the campus a bit to check out the Golden Dome building, and we took a peek into the University Church, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

We also visited the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, which is a replica of the French Shrine (there is even a piece of the original grotto built into it).

I loved looking at all the different buildings and styles of architecture.

Walking through campus made me reminisce about my own college days.

The University of Notre Dame was a nice place to stop and stretch our legs while viewing some amazing sights.

Visit Indiana: Holly's Restaurant & Pub

We stopped by the family-friendly eatery Holly's Restaurant & Pub in Indiana while driving from Michigan to Chicago.

Most of the family ordered some great looking sandwiches and burgers.
Chicago Grill
The Chicago Grill consisted of thinly-sliced roast beef, sour cream, tomato, and green onions.

Bacon & Cheeseburger

The McKenzie Burger
The McKenzie Burger was topped with BBQ sauce, Swiss, bacon, and onion straws.

The Holly's Combo
I shared The Holly's Combo with one of my kids - mozzarella sticks, fried mushrooms, loaded potato skins, and onion rings.

It was a lot of yummy food perfect for sharing.

Service was great at Holly's - it was an ideal spot for a road trip lunch!

Visit Indianapolis: Sub Zero Ice Cream

On our last night in Indianapolis, we decided to visit Sub Zero Ice Cream.

At Sub Zero Ice Cream, you create your own ice cream by first choosing a size, cream (e.g. sugar-free, low-fat, etc.), flavors, and mix-ins, and watch it freeze right before your eyes!

If the options are just too overwhelming, you can choose from a pre-set menu of flavor "Sensations."

Each of my kids opted for three flavors + 2 mix-ins.

Strawberry, watermelon, cherry + cherries, marshmallows

White Chocolate, chocolate, fudge ice cream + cookie dough & M&M's

Peppermint, peanut butter, fudge + cookie dough and raspberries

Some of their choices sounded questionable, but they ate everything up!

The employees are super friendly and patient, and it was definitely a fun stop for dessert!

Visit Indianapolis: Lincoln Square Pancake House

While in Indianapolis we enjoyed a great breakfast at Lincoln Square Pancake House.

Donut Biscuits

Biscuits & Gravy

Meat Lovers Scrambler
Toast
Mickey Mouse Pancakes

We decided to try the Donut Biscuits - fried biscuits sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with apple butter.  It reminded me of andagi!

I had the Meat Lovers Scrambler, which consisted of 2 eggs scrambled with bacon, sausage, ham, and cheese; 2 strips of bacon, 2 links of sausage, and hash browns.  It sure was a lot of food - I easily shared with my kids!

For just $4.99 each, my kids opted for the Mickey Mouse Pancake, which came with bacon or sausage.

Service was excellent!

Visit Indianapolis: BRICS Ice Cream

Our ice cream stop in Indiana brought us to BRICS (Broad Ripple Ice Cream Station), which is housed in an old train station!

BRICS serves Michigan-made Sherman's ice cream.
Scooperman
Peppermint Stick
Yellow Cake Batter
Yellow Cake Batter is the most popular flavor offered at BRICS!

Yellow cake pieces and fudge were mixed in with cake batter ice cream.  It definitely reminded me of the boxed cake mix!

Scooperman was a mixture of Blue Moon, Wild Cherry, and Lemon ice cream flavors.

Service was very friendly, and BRICS sure was a popular spot for ice cream in the Broad Ripple area!

Visit Indiana: Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites

While in Indianapolis, we visited the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, where a variety of exhibits showcased the people, places, and events that are integral to Indiana's history.

The building itself, made completely from Indiana-sourced materials (limestone, brick, and sandstone, to name a few), houses several different types of cultural, scientific, and art exhibits.

The Natural History galleries included exhibit focusing on the Birth of the Earth, Ancient Seas, and Natural Regions.

The Cultural History galleries included some of my kids' favorite interactive exhibits, where they tried their hands at churning butter and splitting wood.

The exhibits in these galleries were very intriguing, as they depicted the evolution of Indiana's history, and also included a lot of pop culture information that I personally thought was interesting.

My oldest son is into airlines and airplanes, so he was fascinated with the small ATA exhibit (ATA Airlines was based in Indianapolis).
Another fave for the kids at the Indiana State Museum was Science at Play, where kids could create all sorts of fun items.

I really liked the displays which featured a lot of retro toys and games - it was like a walk down memory lane!

Although my kids were more interested in the interactive exhibits than the historical ones, the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites was still a neat place to visit, and there was something for everyone to enjoy!

Visit Indianapolis: Bazbeaux Pizza

My husband loves finding pizza spots whenever we travel, and while in Indy, we went to award-winning Bazbeaux Pizza.

Garlic Bread with Pesto

Colossus

Pepperoni, Bacon, Spinach
B.O.T.

The pizzas tasted as fabulous as they looked!

The B.O.T. was topped with bacon, red onion, tomato and basil. The Colossus included pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham, mushroom, red onion, green pepper, and black olive.

We also ordered a "create your own" pizza with bacon, spinach, and pepperoni.

All pizzas are made with a blend of provolone, mozzarella, Pecorino romano cheeses and homemade tomato sauce unless otherwise specified, and you can choose white or wheat crust.  Gluten-free crusts are also available.

All of the pizzas were so delicious with a perfect thin crust.  If I had to choose a fave, it would be the B.O.T.

The Garlic Bread can be ordered with cheese or pesto for an additional charge. I love pesto, so I opted for that version. So good!

Salads and sandwiches are also offered, but you must get a pizza if you go to Bazbeaux!
