Airport Eats: Mustards Grill at SFO

After landing at SFO for a connecting flight, we were famished, and went to the first sit-down restaurant we could find - Mustards Grill, which has a flagship in Napa.

Onion Rings
The Onion Rings were more like onion strings.  I think strings are better on salads or sandwiches, and rings are better for eating as an appetizer.

Mustards Fish & Chips

Beer Battered Rock Cod was served with a generous serving of fries.

Crazy Good Smoked Chicken Wings

The Crazy Good Smoked Chicken Wings were indeed very good, as was made evident when my son devoured them all.

Adult Grilled Cheese Sandwich

I love Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, and this sandwich was full of fontina, red peppers, and a basil aioli.

It paired perfectly with the soup of the day - a Tomato Bisque!

Tomato Bisque

We had two different servers, and they were both very friendly and accommodating.  Although one of our dishes never got submitted with our order, and it ended up being served to the table next to us after they finally worked on our order, we still thought Mustards Grill was a great airport eatery.

The food was great!

Visit San Francisco: Liholiho Yacht Club

Liholiho Yacht Club (not an actual “Yacht Club,” but instead named after a group of `ohana and friends that came together fostering the community) has been on my must-try list for some time now.  Although we were staying 90 minutes away (without traffic), my friend insisted we go to Liholiho Yacht Club, because it was on his must-try list too.

We found street parking nearby, and walked a short distance to the restaurant.

We were super lucky to be seated at the `ohana table, with none other than Chef / Owner Ravi and his wife, April, along with two of their friends.

We were spoiled with a feast of dishes inspired by both Chef Ravi’s life on the islands and his family members, many of whom still live in Hawai`i.

All of the food was so good, but my personal faves were the following:

Chips & Dip
I was immediately drawn to the Chips & Dip (since I'm such a snacker).  The furikake chips were fab alone.  With the kim chee dip - creamy with a kick - addicting.  Add some smoked trout roe - that's next level!

Ukoy
The Ukoy is something I probably could've eaten entirely myself.  Consisting of Romano and yellow wax beans, this Filipino dish is akin to tempura, and was perfectly cooked and seasoned.

Poppyseed Steam Bun

The Poppyseed Steam Bun is another dish I loved.  The beef tongue was so tender and flavorful, and the house kimchi gave some nice heat.

Duck Liver Mousse
The Duck Liver Mousse was a pleasant surprise - spread atop banana bread with li hing strawberry and celery - such a great layering of flavors!

Swordfish Katsu

The Swordfish Katsu was as delicious as it looked!  The Thai basil aioli complemented the fish perfectly.

Fried Game Hen
The Fried Game Hen, served with cashews, broccolini, and a black vinegar honey glaze, reminded me of going to Chinese restaurants with my family on O`ahu.

Fried Rice
The Fried Rice was another taste of home, with house kimchi and house spam, mushrooms, and cured egg yolk.
Housemade SPAM

Speaking of a "taste of home," nothing says Hawai`i' more than SPAM, rice, and furikake.  So simple, but simply the best!

Other dishes were indulged in included:
Pork Shoulder Chop

Shaved Pig Head
Tuna Poke

Candy Stripe Tomato

Red Butter Lettuce

Local Halibut Sashimi

Rendang Curry

We were way too full for dessert (who wouldn't be after that feast?) - but Chef Ravi insisted we try a couple of signature desserts.
Baked Hawaii

The Baked Hawaii is of course a take on the popular "Baked Alaska," and this version had a POG sorbet in the center.  So pretty and so delicious!
Mom's Butter Mochi

The texture of the mochi, with a coconut custard center, was amazing.  So reminiscent of childhood!

Our dinner experience at Liholiho Yacht Club was fantastic, and made special not only because we got to dine with Chef Ravi, April, and their friends, but also because of how much connections we made with the food.

Visit San Francisco: Propagation

It's easy to walk past Propagation and not realize it's a cozy bar.  At first glimpse all you'll see is a sign that makes you think it's a laundromat, and as you get closer, you'll notice a lot of plants inside.

But step inside, and you'll be greeted with plants galore and a sleek bar with warm tones.

The garden-centric bar's vibe is chill and relaxing, especially being surrounded by all the plants.

At the time of our visit, they were running a promo for Maui relief efforts. There were two cocktails to choose from, and I chose the "Prayers to Maui" - PCHS Kohana Rum, fresh citrus, and sugar.

It sure was strong, but quite delicious.

It was nice to step into such a welcoming bar and see that they were supporting Maui relief efforts, and serving Kohana Rum.

Propagation was a perfect pre-dinner spot!

Visit San Francisco: Muir Woods National Monument

Muir Woods is a National Monument and home to coast redwoods trees ranging from 500 to 1,200 years old.  The park is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open 365 days a year.  It’s been on my bucket list for some time and I finally made a visit a couple of months ago.

If you are driving to the park, you will need to make a parking reservation in advance and select an arrival time.  You can also purchase your park tickets at the same time online.  Once you’ve parked, you’ve most likely lost cell phone reception so be aware you won’t be able to make any calls or have access to GPS.

The park is cool year round with average day time temperatures between 40 and 70 degrees.  It was just about 60 degrees when we visited in November.  Muir Woods contains 6 miles of trails for you to choose from.  My daughter and I followed a simple 1 hour loop trail that gave us a close up of the redwoods.  It was a calming and happy experience to be there in nature.  I would recommend to any nature lover.

Visit San Francisco: 16th Avenue Tiled Steps

While looking for scenic things to do in San Francisco with my daughter, I came across the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps.  I was instantly attracted to the beautiful mosaic tiled steps and knew my daughter would love it too.  Plus we would get some exercise!

The steps are located in the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood on Moraga Street, between 15th and 16th Avenue.  The steps, completed in 2005, are the result of a neighborhood collaboration to create a sea to stars mosaic flowing up the 163 step stairway.  It is absolutely gorgeous and a quick climb to the top gives you a fine view of the city!  You’ll have to find street parking, but be aware of car thefts and do not leave any valuables in the car.

Visit San Francisco: Boba Guys

Boba Guys started out with two guys learning how to make the perfect cup of boba milk tea and two months later threw their first pop-up.  Now they have expanded to locations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York.  If you see a line, you definitely know you are in the right place.

What sets Boba Guys apart from the rest is their dedication to quality.  You’ll be happy to know that your boba drink is free of anything artificial.  Boba Guys uses their own housemade boba, making it the first boba to be made in the USA!  They use real tea leaves steeped in house and their own crafted natural brown sugar based sweetener.  No wonder there’s always a line!

On our weekend trip to San Francisco, Boba Guys was on our way to the theatre so of course we had to make a stop. Lucky for us we arrived 15 minutes before opening making us the first in line.  My daughter had the classic milk tea with boba and pudding while I had a coffee milk tea with boba. The drinks were delicious and they came with bamboo straws which they encouraged us to compost when done.

Visit San Francisco: Museum of Ice Cream

Lauren screams for boba.

The Museum of Ice Cream is like no other museum and actually is not an official museum, but a place where creativity and celebration collide while you have some delicious ice cream.  I had seen pictures of the museum, but I really had no idea of the concept and was pretty skeptical.  But after going through the self-guided experience and seeing how much my daughter loved it, it was great and I can totally recommend it.  The best part was that the ice cream is really good!

You need to arrive 15 minutes before your ticketed timeslot and they will let you in one group at a time.  After you declare your ice cream name (mine was Aloha Mint) you have your choice of entering down the stairs or via slide.  Take the slide!  It’s in this room where you will receive your first ice cream treat. We had a strawberry ice cream chocolate chip cookie sandwich which was super yummy.  The museum is a forward moving experience meaning once you leave a room, you can’t go back.  But you can feel free to spend as long as you want in the room and enjoy the fun activities it has to offer.  The second room took us to a diner themed experience with a working juke box where we had sips of pink hot chocolate perfectly themed for Pinkmas!

After a few more rooms and ice cream treats, you will end up at the SPRINKLE POOL complete with slide and filled with sprinkles made from antimicrobial material and Instagrammers taking boomerangs, myself included.  My daughter loved it!  We spent the most time in here and she wasn’t even close to being done until I threw out the word “gift shop” to get her out.  Which totally worked.  The gift shop is actually the Museum of Ice Cream café where they sell their own branded ice cream and milkshakes.  You can also get your coffee fix here and you don’t need a ticket to enter.  The Museum of Ice Cream turned out to be a very fun and happy experience.  I noticed people of all ages and all walks of life having a great time!

How cute are these circus animal cookies?

Lauren loved the sprinkle pool!

So many little sets that were perfect for memory making!

Visit San Francisco: Bike Rentals at Sports Basement

Over the weekend, I biked across the Golden Gate Bridge with some friends.  My friend parked her van at Crissy Field and we yelped for bike rentals nearby.  Sports Basement was just a short walk away so we headed there.  I was a little worried since we didn’t have a rental reservation, but they had plenty of bike inventory at the shop.

You can rent the bikes for up to 3 hours or for the full day.  We only had time to bike across the bridge and back so we opted for the 3 hour rental.  The staff working in the bike department are great.  They were patient with all our questions and then quickly got us fitted for our bikes and gave us instructions on how to use the gears.  The bikes come with a lock and a pouch to store your belongings if you need one.  We secured our helmets and were on our way.

We lucked out as it was a beautiful and clear day on the bridge.  We were there during Fleet Week so we got to see the planes flying overhead practicing for their show!

Visit San Francisco: Mr. Holmes Bakehouse

Mr. Holmes Bakehouse is home to the famous cruffin: an amazing pastry that is a cross between a croissant and muffin.  Ry Stephen, co-owner and pastry chef came up with the idea of the cruffin with another member of his team and spent months perfecting the recipe.

The bakery changes the flavor of the cruffin daily and sells a limited number each day.  But if you can't get your hands on a cruffin, fear not; they serve coffee and other delicious looking pastries as well.

A small shop, but a definite must try!

Visit San Francisco: Golden Gate Bakery

Five stars for the most delicious egg tarts!  If you can get your hands on them that is.  The bakery is famous for being on vacation and a fickle schedule that there are websites and twitter accounts dedicated to whether or not the bakery is open on the daily.

So are these baked egg tarts worth the trouble?  YES.  It took about half an hour for us to get our hands on some egg tarts fresh out of the oven, but it was a long 30 minutes as we waited in anticipation.  We just didn't know how many egg tarts were left.  But luckily, tray after tray arrived even with customers ordering dozens at a time.

We immediately had one right outside the bakery and they were amazing and made all my egg tart dreams come true.  They were incredible hot, but they were also very delicious cold.  If egg tarts aren't your thing, the bakery also offers jin dui, rice cakes, and other Chinese pastries.

San Francisco in the Fall

This past Fall we took the kids to San Francisco for the first time.  I found a great deal on Hawaiian Airlines (just $398 RT!), so I immediately made reservations to coincide with my kids' fall break in October.

San Francisco welcomes over 18 million visitors and convention-goers a year, but I quickly found out that if you plan on traveling to San Francisco in October, be prepared to pay more than you normally would the rest of the year for a hotel room.  October is a huge convention month, which means rooms are at a premium.

And the closer you are to the "49-square mile" city (it's actually 47.335 square miles) , the more you'll have to spend for lodging (and don't even get me started on parking in the city!), so we opted for a hotel 30 minutes away, with free parking (and free breakfast!).

While in San Francisco, we considered taking San Francisco Muni options and the BART, but when researching routes, times, and fees, it made more sense for us to rent a car.

Yes, parking rates are pretty crazy just about every where in San Francisco, but if you are willing to walk a bit (and don't mind hills), you can find great all-day rates.  On our first day in San Francisco, we found a $14 early-bird all-day rate (compared to the $5 - $10/hour rates closer to the attractions).

We were in total tourist mode while in San Francisco.  We rode a cable car, went on a hop-on, hop-off bus tour (which I highly recommend - no need to drive through the crazy SF traffic yourself, and you'll learn so much about the city), cruised under the golden gate bridge, visited a number of museums, and checked out several attractions on Pier 39.

We also indulged in popular San Francisco eats - chowder in a bread bowl, Ghirardelli sundae, and IT's-IT ice cream.

On our final full day, we drove to Vallejo (about 60-90 minutes away from San Francisco) to visit Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.  If you find yourself in Vallejo, be sure to make a stop at the Joy of Eating Cafe - one of the most popular brunch spots in the area (don't get discouraged if there's a line of people - it moves quickly, and the food is worth the wait!).

The microclimates in the Bay area mean layering is essential.  Most days long sleeve tees were all we needed (and on a couple of days it felt like even short sleeves would've been fine).  It rained a couple of days in SF (a friend who lives in the area mentioned how it hardly ever rains!), and we found ourselves caught in one of the worst storms ever one evening (it was so bad we couldn't see in front of us and blindly ran through the parking lot to find our car), but for the most part, we lucked out with clear skies and cool temps.

Lombard Street
Traffic was a given just about any time of the day.  I was a bit shocked to see several muni drivers get into arguments with car drivers while at stoplights!

However, I was very impressed with how friendly and helpful people were, especially at the airport. Employees made sure we went on the correct AirTran line and made sure we got off at the correct stop, and a frequent flier gave us a tip in terms of a shortcut to the AirTran back to the airport.
Riding on the AirTran
We had five full days in San Francisco, yet I feel like we barely scratched the surface of all that there is to see and do.  The city if full of history, innovation, and some of the world's most famous landmarks, and I look forward to visiting again - any time of year.

Visit San Francisco: Ghirardelli Square

If you're a chocoholic like I am, a visit to Ghirardelli Square is a must while in San Francisco.

Yes, there are several Ghirardelli Chocolate shops where you can stock up on all sorts of chocolate confections and indulge in some ice cream, but there are also some really cute boutiques, as well as several great restaurants.

Because parking can get pricey at Ghirardelli Square (well, parking is pricey just about everywhere in San Francisco!), we made sure not to exceed two hours there, since parking is $5 with validation for up 2 hours (with a minimum $25 purchase).

We had dinner at The Pub, browsed the shops, then ate an ice cream sundae at the Ghirardelli Chocolate Marketplace.

It was a fun (and delicious!) place to visit while in San Francisco.

Visit San Francisco: Pier 39

Millions of people - both locals and visitors, visit Pier 39 each year.

Whether you want to shop for souvenirs, indulge in a bowl of chowder, take in the views of Alcatraz, or get a closer look at the sea life that call San Francisco home, Pier 39 is the place to be.

On our most recent visit to San Francisco, we visited Pier 39 over two days.  We did a lot at Pier 39 - watched the sea lions, window-shopped, went on a cruise, ate great food, rode on a carousel, and more - and we barely scratched the surface.

Pier 39 Sea Lions in the distance
Attractions and activities are aplenty - the Musical Stairs, the San Francisco Carousel, 7D Experience DarkRide, Blue & Gold Fleet Bay Cruise Adventure, and Aquarium of the Bay, to name a few.

Dining options are plentiful as well.  During our visits we ate at Wipeout Bar & Grill, Boudin Bakery & Cafe, and Aunt Fanny's Cart.

Visit the Pier 39 website to download a coupon good for a Fun Pack full of money-saving coupons, and AAA members can get discounts at various merchants as well.

Parking can be pricey, so be sure to take advantage of any discounts in the Fun Pack or associated with the AAA card.

There is so much to do at Pier 39, and I know we'll have to visit again to experience even more that Pier 39 has to offer.

Save on Attractions with the Go San Francisco Card

If you're visiting San Francisco, the Go San Francisco Card offers a great way to save money if you plan to visit multiple attractions.

There are several Go Cards to choose from with different lengths of validity:
  • Build Your Own Pass and Package Deals: 30 days.
  • All-Inclusive Pass: The number of days you bought the pass for. We offer a variety of durations, from 1 to 7 days.
  • Explorer Pass: 30 days.
I was fortunate to receive two Go San Francisco Cards, All-Inclusive 1 Day Passes, which allowed us to visit as many of the 27 participating attractions in a single day as we wanted.

Attractions include:
If you have a single day pass, it's important to map out where you want to visit, figure out how much time you'll spend at each attraction, and calculate the costs to find out how you could save the most money.

The Go San Francisco Card makes it easy for you to find out what attractions are near each other simply by clicking on the Location of a desired attraction.  A map will pop up advising you of other nearby attractions.

If you're spending a day at or near Pier 39, you could go to the Aquarium of the Bay ($24.95), Madame Tussauds ($27), Ripley's Believe It or Not! ($22) and/or the San Francisco Dungeon (27) all in a single day.  That's a savings of almost $36!  You could save even more if you have more time (and energy!) to spare.

You can get a digital Go City Card sent to your mobile device and use it with the free Go City Card app, or print your pass at home.  Simply show your card at the ticket office of the first you attraction you want to visit to activate the card.

Such an easy, convenient, and cost-effective way to see the many attractions of San Francisco!

Complimentary Go San Francisco Cards were received for review purposes.

Visit San Francisco: KoJa Kitchen

KoJa Kitchen (KoJa = Korean-Japanese) started out as a food truck, and now has multiple locations all over California.

KoJa combines Korean and Japanese flavors throughout the many dishes, specializing in sandwiches made with crispy garlic rice buns instead of typical wheat buns.

Beef KoJa

Beef Bowl

Chicken KoJa

Teriyaki Zen Taco

Braised Pork Taco

Umami Fries
I ordered the Chicken KoJa - Korean BBQ Chicken, Sesame Vinaigrette Lettuce, Tomato, Cilantro, Gochujang Sauce and Sesame Seeds.  The chicken had so much flavor, along with a bit of spice.  I thought the crispy fried garlic rice buns were good, but they were very thick and made the sandwich difficult to eat.  I ended up using a fork for the chicken and ate the buns separately.

The Umami Fries were topped with a super delicious Miso-Coconut Braised Pork, Fried Shallots, Masago, Green Onions, Red Sauce, and Garlic Aioli.

The same pork was used in the taco, which my middle son ordered, but he said he preferred the Teriyaki Zen Taco, which was filled with a Soy and Portobello Mushroom Patty, Sesame Vinaigrette Lettuce, Red Sauce, Japanese Mayo, Fried Shallots, and Nori.

My husband liked his Beef Bowl - Korean BBQ Beef, Onions, Kimchi, Masago, Red Sauce, Green Onions, Masago, Fried Shallots, Sesame Seeds.

My oldest enjoyed the Beef KoJa - Korean BBQ Beef, Sauteed Onions, Pineapple, Sesame Vinaigrette Lettuce, Sesame Seeds, but just as I did - he ate the fillings with a fork.

Prices are pretty reasonable, and service was quick and friendly.

The flavors were fantastic in all of the dishes, therefore it's no surprise why KoJa Kitchen continues to expand.
