Handcrafted Ready-to-Bake Cookie Dough from Dough Boi

Fresh out of the oven!

For Mother's Day, I wanted my kids to bake me cookies from a recipe I found off the internet. When I told my daughter, she enthusiastically said OK, but when I told my son, he asked for my second choice. So when I was introduced to Dough Boi, a mom who handcrafts ready-to-bake premium cookie dough, I knew this would make a great gift from non-bakers like my son.

You can see the weekly flavors on Instagram @doughboi_hi and DM your order. I picked up my order from Mililani. The dough packs of 10 ready-to-bake balls of cookie dough come neatly packaged in a cute container and can be kept in the freezer. You get 2 dough packs for $25.

I tried the chocolate chip, macnut with white chocolate, and chocolate with white chocolate. I knew I was going to love the chocolate chip, but I was surprised that I really enjoyed the other two flavors as I am usually not a fan of white chocolate. The combos are just so tasty! The cookies are soft with crispy edges and perfectly sized.

These dough packs are definitely a gift I would love to receive so I was happy to gift them to people that I knew would enjoy them. I love having one in my freezer so that I can enjoy freshly baked cookies with no mess anytime the sweet craving hits.

Need Windshield Repair?

Before and After

I needed to get a small rock chip repair done on my windshield and my first thought was to take it to Safelite where I had a great experience replacing my windshield previously. However, this time I thought I might try to find a locally owned small business.

I was happy to find My Glass Guy Mobile Windshield Repair. I texted Ryan at My Glass Guy with a picture of my windshield and he quicky responded with a quote for the repair which was comparable to a quote I received from Safelite. When he arrived at my house, he explained what he needed to do for the repair and what to expect it would look like afterwards. The entire repair was done in half an hour. Payment can be made by cash or credit card (small service fee if using card).

The mobile business services the entire island and many dealerships use him as well. It was an easy process and I would recommend My Glass Guy Mobile Windshield Repair.

Sweet Little Mochi

Sweet Little Mochi 4 pack

I've been the lucky recipient of mochi from Sweet Little Mochi twice now and I am a huge fan!  The mochi is incredibly soft with the yummiest of fillings! The mochi is made the very same day as pick up!  Now that's fresh!  Also, the owner/baker says you can even refrigerate her mochi and it was stay soft. I've never put this to the test because we have never had any leftover!

If you love mochi, head to her IG and you will find that she has a Girl's Day Sale with preorders starting TODAY, February 25th at 3pm.  She also offers mochi party platters of stuffed mochi and chichi dango that can be customized with the flavors she offers.  Pickups are in Ewa, but stay tuned to her IG for the occasional pop-up!

MacBaby Cookie Company

A special kit through Yelp. She also offered through her IG account for sale.

I learned about MacBaby Cookie Company through a Virtual Yelp Elite Event that I thought sounded really interesting.  Yelpers were able to pick up a cookie kit for a fee and then log in on zoom to attend the baking class.  I met Belia, the owner and baker extraordinaire, when I picked up the kit at Pizza Press in Pearl City.  Her variety of eye catching macaroon cookies are also sold at Pizza Press.

Selection of cookies at Pizza Press

Right off, I could tell she was a warm and friendly person, but when she showed me she stuck in a little bottle of rose in the kit for pairing purposes, I became a fan for life!  I like her style!  The kit we received had everything to make her coconut macaroons and authentic Italian cannolis.  If you are lucky enough to be a Hawaii resident, you can DM her on IG @justcannolishawaii to order her cannolis because she won't ship those perfect babies in fear of the shell breaking.  For everyone else, you can order her MacBaby Coconut Macaroons that come in over 50+ flavors. You can follow her MacBaby account @macbabycookies to order her handmade macaroons and she's also on Etsy and Gold Belly!

Cannoli shells and filling were provided. I just piped in. You can order them ready made.
Both the cannolis and macaroons are delicious! As proof, my family of 4 wiped out 5 cannolis and 15 macaroons in one night!  Belia has been baking the coconut macaroons for 30 years now and fills all the business orders with her son.  Definitely give her a follow and check out her amazing creations!

Lemon Peel Gummies from Sun Chong Hawaii

I love gummy candy, but the lihing and lemon peel gummy candy craze never attracted my attention, as I always proclaimed myself to be a purist when it came to gummy candy. But then my husband decided to try and make it home for his friends at work, and since it was right in front of me, I tried a few, and thought "hey, this is actually pretty good!".

So of course I did some searching on the web to see who makes the best ones (since there are sooo many people and places that sell them now).  I watched Frolic Hawaii's Assistance Editor Thomas Obungen's taste 7 different lemon peel gummies in a blind taste test, and he selected Sun Chong Grocery's lemon peel gummy bears (click here to view the video).  Sun Chong Grocery also won the 2020 Best of Honolulu 'Best Lemon Peel Gummies' award.  These two accolades had convinced me to make a special trip to Chinatown to seek out Sun Chong Grocery's lemon peel gummies.

Upon my arrival, (about 15 minutes to closing), a lady greeted me at the entrance and asked me what I was looking for and she would retrieve it for me. I told her I was looking for lemon peel gummy bears, and she came back with a handful of different types. Since it was 4 for $20, I purchased two gummy bears, one gummy strawberry, and one Gushers.

Gushers

I gave the Gushers to my nieces, and they loved it! Their initial reaction was "whoa!". I think the lemon peel add a slight "zing" that a first-timer doesn't expect.  The gummy strawberries were my favorite, since gummy strawberries in general are my favorite gummy candies. While I'm not an expert on lemon peel gummies, I do think Sun Chong mixes in just the right amount of lemon peel to give the gummy candies that perfect balance of sweet, salt, and tart.

If you can't make it to their little shop on Hotel Street in Chinatown, you can order online at sunchonghi.com

Hidden Gem: Café Kalawe

Café Kalawe is a hidden gem in Kaneohe, literally.  It is located in an office building on the corner of Kahuhipa and Kawa Streets, with no signage on the outside. But just look for Territorial Savings on the corner of Kawa and Kahuhipa Streets, and you're there.  Enter the building and you'll find the restaurant on the first floor.  It's a small establishment with a few 4-tops inside and a couple of tables outside. If you come with more than 4 people, you will need to sit on different tables.

Café Kalawe serves up local favorites like saimin, shoyu chicken, chopped steak, hamburger steak, omelettes, pancakes, hamburgers, etc.

Unfortunately we came close to closing (one hour before?!) and they said they had shut down the saimin already (whatever that means), so my son had to settle for a pancake, which was quite large and very fluffy.

I opted for the mini chopped steak with green salad and loved how the salad came with won ton chips, kamaboko, and their homemade dressing. It was a nicely portioned plate of food for lunch.

We will definitely be back to try more things on their menu!

Body Balance Honolulu Review and Giveaway Announcement

Complimentary class was provided by our sponsor. All opinions are my own.

As a daughter, wife, and mother of soon-to-be 6 year old twin boys, I value 'ME' time. Since I work full time in town, it's hard to find time just for myself, to do what I love. And when I do find the time, I try to make the best of it.

One of the things I like to do when I do have 'ME' time is work out. I love running, and I love to lift weights - it just makes me feel better, more balanced, and in turn, that enables me to be a better daughter, wife, and mom.

I also like to take group exercise fitness classes, but they're just not as convenient for me as before.

Many places require that you go down early to sign up for classes (or a bike), set up equipment, and be in a large room with 30 other people fighting for personal space.  In a large class, you don't get a lot of personal attention, or personal space.

But then I was recently introduced to Body Balance Honolulu, a small boutique studio in Kaka'ako, courtesy of Yelp, and I liked it so much, that when one of the owners of Body Balance invited me back to try another class, I said "absolutely!" with no hesitation at all.  You will see why, as I walk you through my experience.

They gave me my choice of class, and it was such a hard decision to make, because I wanted to try them all. What makes Body Balance different from other boutique workout studios in Hawaii is that they offer a variety of group fitness classes in different disciplines - indoor cycling (Body Cycle), pilates reformer, HIIT, TRX, FITBarre, plyometrics, and weightlifting.  Some classes just have one discipline (such as BodyCycle which is 45 minutes of indoor rhythm-based cycling), some classes are a combination of two or more (such as Ride & Rip, which is 30 minutes of BodyCycle, and 30 minutes of strength training).

I wanted to try a class that incorporated both cardio and strength training, so I signed up for Ride & Rip with Maxine.  Signing up for classes is easy - just create an account on their website (if you haven't done so already), and reserve your spot. For classes that include BodyCycle, you get to select your bike when you reserve our spot.   I love how you can reserve  your spot in classes (and your bike) ahead of time, because at many other fitness studios or gyms, you have to go early to sign up for classes, and if you don't  get there in time, you're out of luck.

I showed up 15 minutes before the scheduled start time to check-in, get my cycling shoes (you can bring your own or rent them from the studio for $3), and make the necessary adjustments on my assigned bike (seat and handle-bar height). Don't know how to secure the bike shoes into the clips or adjust your bike? No worries - the Body Balance staff members and instructors are there to help. Some of the other class attendees are willing to help too, which is what I also liked about this studio - everyone was so friendly!

Then we embarked on our 30 minute ride, full of sprints, hills, and even some upper body work (push ups on the handle bars). It didn't take long for me to work up a sweat and get my heart rate up.  What I like about indoor cycling is that it's always MY ride, and I can make it as hard or easy as I want it to be. With the lights going on and  off like at a nightclub, and our legs pumping to the beat of the music, it was both fun and challenging at the same time.

After 30 minutes of sweating on the bike, we left the cycle room to the multi-purpose room.  To my surprise, the room was already set up for the class - all we had to do was choose a mat.

Maxine wasted no time in putting us to work.  First up - arms!

Shoulders, chest, triceps, biceps, and back ....

Moving on to the legs ...

My legs were on fire since we had just put them through 30 minutes of cycling!

If you have never used a hip circle resistance band before, you're in for a real treat. It really works your booty!

The final segment worked our abs/core ....

After our 60 minute sweat session was over, Maxine hung around to chat with us - she was so approachable and friendly. I really got the feeling that I was part of a community here at Body Balance, and not just a guest.

Check out the highlights from my workout!

Did you like what you see? You're in luck! Body Balance is inviting our blog readers to come down to the studio and experience a class for free!   All you need to do is visit their website at bodybalancehonolulu.org, click on "BUY" at the top of their homepage, look for "First Class" in the Class Packages section, and click the "BUY" button. Create an account (or log into your account if you already have one), use the code “MYTIMEFORME” when prompted, and your first class is on the house!

Trust me, after just one class, you'll be wanting to come back for more. On their website, you can buy a single class, or a 6-pack, 12-pack, or 24-pack of classes (these are perfect for those who cannot come down on a regular basis but still want to drop in for classes when their schedule allows), or you can become a monthly member.  Private and semi-private training sessions are also available.

GIVEAWAY ANNOUNCEMENT: Check Hawaii Mom Blog's post on Instagram tomorrow, Wednesday, October 16, 2019 for details on how to enter to win a 6-pack of classes!

Yelp Fit Club at Body Balance

It's been just about 20 years since I last took an indoor group cycling class, so when my friend invited me to be her +1 at a Yelp FitClub class at Body Balance, I was pretty excited to it out. Would the class be the same as the indoor cycling classes 20 years ago? Would my body be able to handle how that it's 20 years older?!

First, before I get into the class itself, I will tell you a little bit about Body Balance, the studio that hosted this event. It is a small, locally owned fitness studio located in Kakaako, minutes away from Ward Village.  Their classes are innovative and varied in disciplines, all geared towards giving you a full-body workout each and every time.

Today's class was called BodyCycle, a 45 minute high-intensity cycling class.  Special indoor cycling shoes are required, and were provided to us free of charge.

At the front desk, we were given a seating chart and asked to select the bike we wanted for this workout. As with any type of class (academic or exercise), I prefer to sit in the back.

Our instructor was Nat (cool name, right?!) and she came around to assist us with getting our shoes attached to the pedals (it's tricky if this is your first time) and making sure our bike seats and handlebars were at the appropriate height.

Then the music started and we were off on a 45+-minute ride full of sprints, hills, bursts of energetic cycling, interchanged with freewheeling downhill segments.  At times we stood up and got our butts out of the saddle for that extra burn, and even did some push ups and arm work with dumbbells that were conveniently stored under our seats. The pace is set to the rhythm of the music, which added an element of fun into this grueling, sweat-dripping workout.

What's great about Body Cycle is that YOU are in control at all times. It's YOUR ride, and Nat made sure to remind us of that at the beginning of our workout. If you want to go hard, you go hard. If you need to take a step back and slow it down, turn the knob left and ease up on the tension.  At times it got hard, but with Nat's energy, positive encouragement, and coaching throughout the ride, I never gave up, and stayed on rhythm.

At the end of the 45 minute ride, the mirrors were foggy and everyone was drenched in sweat - a sign of a great workout!

Thank you Yelp for organizing this awesome Yelp Fit Club event at Body Balance!

Pipeline Bakeshop & Creamery's Pumpkin Crunch

Every year we go to the in-laws for Thanksgiving lunch. This year I volunteered to bring a pumpkin crunch dessert from Pipeline Bakeshop & Creamery, one of my favorite bakeries on Oahu. I had never tried their pumpkin crunch before, but I had complete confidence in Pipeline Bakeshop, as I have never eaten something there that I didn't like!

Pre-ordering was highly recommended, and we had the option of picking it up the day before Thanksgiving or the day of. Since I didn't have anything to do on Thanksgiving morning, I opted to pick it up on Thanksgiving morning so that the boys and I could go on a little adventure into town before the family lunch gathering.

The pumpkin crunch turned out to be a huge hit, despite everyone being rather full from the Thanksgiving meal! The butter pecan crust really stands out - it was so so buttery and crunchy.

If you want to try this pumpkin crunch, you're in luck, because they sell it by the square all year round in their shop!

Mama'Nita Scones

Mama'Nita Scones, which has been making 100% natural and homemade scones in Kailua since 2016, may be closing their doors for good after December 24, 2018. I italicized "may", because the owner has not made a final decision yet on its closure.

I'm usually not a fan of scones, but I like Mama'Nita's scones.  My favorite flavors are the Lilikoi (which is their signature scone), blueberry, and chocolate chip.

Since it's a small operation, pre-ordering is highly recommended for large orders.

They also sell packaged scone mix which make nice gifts this holiday season.

Stop by before December 24, 2018, as there's no guarantee that they'll reopen after the holidays.
