Visit Waikoloa: HiCO Hawaiian Coffee

We stopped a HiCO Hawaiian Coffee for sandwiches.  We got them to go for the drive back to Hilo, so the pics aren't the best . . .

Truffle Tuna
My friend had the Truffle Tuna and loved it.  From the Sundog sourdough bread to the arugula and Dijon, he was impressed by the sandwich.
Hashbrown & Bacon Croissant
Although the hashbrown wasn't as crispy as I hoped, the sandwich was so delicious and filling.  I would never have thought to use a pesto mayo on a breakfast sandwich, but it worked!

Visit Tokyo: J.S. Pancake Cafe

We were hanging out in Nakano Central Park, looking for somewhere to eat.  A quick Google search led us to J.S. Pancake Cafe right at the park!

Lemon Cream Cheese Ricotta Pancakes

Chocolate Banana Ricotta Pancakes

Blueberry Cream Cheese Ricotta Pancakes
They of course have a variety of pancakes to choose from.  Although not as photogenic as the photos on the menu and display board, they were light and fluffy.

They also have savories:

Bacon Sausage Egg Pancakes

Sweet Chili & Sour Cream Baked Potato
It was a big restaurant so there were no issues in seating our family of 5.

It was a nice find, especially if you love pancakes!

GOEN Dining + Bar Weekend Lunch

Halo Halo

I finally made it to Goen after all these years! I don't make it out to Kailua very often, but we were in the neighborhood just in time for Goen's weekend lunch offered from 12pm to 3pm Fridays through Sundays. Goen is an open air neighborhood restaurant in Kauila by Roy Yamaguchi so you will be sure to find Roy's classics like the misoyaki butterfish on the menu.

For lunch, we opted for the Avocado Toast that is served on focaccia with arugula, sunnyside egg and bacon; and the Goen Burger with onion ring, lettuce, and secret sauce. Kudos to Executive Chef Yoichi Saito because my son said they were the best french fries he had in his entire life. We completed our delicious meal with the much talked about halo halo. The strawberry, mango, and coconut flavors were refreshing and I especially loved the flan! Really enjoyed our dining experience at Goen!

Thai Bistro Suksabay in Pearl Kai Shopping Center

Pad Seiew

Thai Bistro Suksabay is located in Pearl Kai and has been around since 2017. It’s our go-to for Thai food in that area. They are a family owned and run business featuring family recipes. The food is consistently good and the service is quick and efficient.

If we have a group of four, our usual order includes the panang curry (curry sauce prepared with coconut milk and green beans), pad thai, tom yum soup, and summer rolls. Since it was only two of us this time, we ordered the panang curry and pad s
eiew (stir-fried chow-fun, broccoli, and egg with black bean sauce). Each rice, noodle or curry dish comes with your choice of veggie, meat, or seafood.

Oli's Kitchen - Open Daily for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Avocado Toast

I love any restaurant that serves breakfast all day so I was happy to have lunch for the first time at Oli's Kitchen. Located at Puck's Alley, Oli's Kitchen offers daily breakfast, lunch and dinner featuring local favorites like loco moco, hamburger steak, and more.

Unfortunately due to the egg shortage, I couldn't order the omelet sandwich I wanted. It was no big deal though, because Oli's offers so many great items on their menu. I ended up with the Bulgogi sandwich with fries and it was delicious and filling!

Half and Half Chicken (Garlic and Salt n Pepper)

Oli's Kitchen is locally owned and operated and they strive to work with local suppliers. They are a great casual eatery with great service. Parking is available in the lot with your first hour free without validation. Second hour was $3.

Lunch at Straits Honolulu

When Straits first opened, my friends and I tried to stop by for drinks but the new restaurant was packed so we were politely turned away. I could instantly tell from the dark lighting and the loud music that Straits at night was fun and had a great vibe, but not for me. Straits during the day, however, is definitely more to my liking.

The restaurant is spacious and quite pretty with beautiful natural daylight and the menu is kept simpler with lunch plates and specialty offerings. It's the perfect place to have lunch with the girls, but also suitable for a business lunch. Straits features Singaporean cuisine with a modern twist. We enjoyed the Hainan Chicken, a signature dish, as well as the Nasi Lemak plate and Laksa Noodle Soup. The food great and the service was excellent. Straits is also offering a brunch menu on the weekends.

Honolulu's Gourmet Brunch Spot: Farmhouse Cafe

Met up with a few friends for a workday lunch at Farmhouse Cafe. It's not as crowded as I remember it to be, but the last two times I've dine here were on the weekends, so maybe it's slower on the weekdays.

My favorite thing to eat here is the Potato Mille-Feuille. On the menu, it says "order in advance", but we ordered it when we placed our order for our meal, and it was the first thing that came out of the kitchen, so I'm not quite sure what they mean by "order in advance".

It's made of layers of potato, flavored with lots of butter. My favorite part is the crisp outer layers - it's almost like eating potato chips.

Here's what we each ordered for our entrees:

Oeuf en Muerette (poached eggs, in red wine burgundy sauce, pearl onion, pork belly, mushrooms)

The Gourmet Burger (100% natural American Wagyu, onoin date jam, Gorgonzola bleu cheese, Demi-glace & Potato Mille-Feuille)

The Banyard Sandwich (Braised brisket, creamy horseradish, picked onions, Havarti cheese, Artisan bread)

Gourmet Ham and Cheese Sandwiches Croque Madame (Kurobuta ham, Emmental cheese, Mornay sauce, Artisan bread)

We could not pass on the Farmhouse Signature Beignets, with Grand Marnier Chocolate Sauce and Strawberry Hibiscus Jam.

Honestly, the Potato Mille-Feuille was the star of the show today. The burger was ordered "medium", but it appeared to be undercooked. Note - if you like ketchup with your burgers, bring your own - they don't have ketchup here. The braised brisket in the Barnyard Sandwich was tough and very fatty. It wasn't the type of brisket that I'm used to (the kind that is so tender you don't need a knife to cut it).

If I were to come here again, I think I would try the crepes or the Brioche French Toast.

Monarch Poke at Pearl Kai Shopping Center

Shoyu Ahi Poke Bowl

Created by the owners of Plantation Tavern in Kapolei, Monarch Poke is a relatively new restaurant located in the Pearl Kai shopping center.  Monarch Poke specializes in quality, fresh poke while serving up a variety of poke bowls, plate lunches, pupus, and sandwiches.

We stopped in for lunch and being our first time, we were a little overwhelmed by the menu.  The counter person was very nice and offered us a sample of their poke which was delicious!  The spicy ahi had a nice kick to it.  I ended up getting the three piece bulgogi beef with gochujang aioli and cucumber kim chee which was very tasty.

Bulgogi Beef Bao Buns

With such a great menu, Monarch Poke is a welcomed addition to Pearl Kai!  They are open from 11am to 6pm Monday through Friday, from 12pm to 6pm on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays. Go check them out for your next poke fix!

Guieb Cafe - Aiea

Ube Mascarpone Pancakes

I recently had lunch at Guieb Cafe's third location in Aiea.  Located near Cutter Ford on Hekaha Street, the family owned restaurant serves all day breakfast and lunch.  They offer dine-in with table service as well as take-out.  I love that they take reservations too because lunch can get busy.

I wanted to try everything on the menu, but I settled on the Braised short rib benedict and the Ube Mascarpone pancakes which our server recommended.  She was right, the ube pancakes were fluffy, tasty, and just the right amount of sweetness.  I would definitely order them again and again.  I loved my benedict as well!

Service here is excellent, parking is plentiful, and the food is delicious and reasonably priced.

Visit Maui: SixtyTwo MarcKet

Seared Fresh-Caught Ahi Loco Moco with spam fried rice

On a recent trip to Maui for the Sonic grand opening, one of Hawaii's favorite foodies - Melissa Chang (IG @melissa808) - suggested we make room in our day for brunch at Sixtytwo MarcKet in Wailuku.  Headed by Chef Marc McDowell and Chef Larry Badua, the restaurant features seasonal fresh ingredients and rotates its menu every 62 days.

Currently serving their spring menu, Sixtytwo MarcKet has an extensive breakfast and lunch menu that is sure to please everyone in your party.  We had a delicious time and I highly recommend you stop by when you are in Maui.

Waioli Kitchen & Bake Shop

Waioli Kitchen & Bake Shop is more than just a bakey and restaurant, it's a training ground for individuals who want and are given hope and a chance to learn life skills. But you would never know it, if you came here without the knowledge of this restaurant's history and mission.

The restaurant is located in Manoa, which is primarily a residental area. It rains here a lot, which is why the grounds are so lush and green.

The menu is limited with just a handful of breakfast and luinch items, as well as baked goods. My friends and I met here for lunch on a weekday and really enjoyed our meal.

BLTA

Waioli Breakfast Bowl

Waioli Bacon Cheeseburger

Goodies from the Bakery

Chocolate Chip Cookie

Tarta de Santiago

Blueberry Scone

The ingredients tasted fresh and you can tell the dishes were carefully crafted and put together with care and effort, not just slapped together and thrown on a plate. the BLTA is served with Japanese milk bread, and the burger is made with grassfed beef from the Big Island and served with a grilled housemade bun. I really liked the burger - it was very juicy!

A 3% fee is added to every check to support their mission of training and recovery. I did not mind paying this considering what it's for. The workers here were friendly and seemed to care about their jobs and what they were doing. To help support a business whose mission is to help its own employees is reason enough for me to keep coming back.
