Teddy's Bigger Burgers Haleiwa

I know Teddy's Bigger Burgers has great burgers (according to friends and fam), but I personally love the non-burger items, specifically the chicken sandwiches and tots (the crispiest tots ever!).

We went to the Haleiwa Store Lots location recently, where we indulged in some delicious eats and shakes.

Volcano Burger

As you may expect, the Volcano Burger is spicy, with jalapenos and and Jack cheese.

Kaneohe Burger
The Kaneohe Burger comes with bacon, avocado, and cheddar.

Double Cheeseburger

Chicken Tenders

I shared the Chicken Tenders with one of my kids.  It sure hit the spot - crispy on the outside, and juicy and tender on the inside.

Considering how prices have gone up at most restaurants, I think the burgers at Teddy's are priced well compared to other restaurants who serve similar styles of burgers (that are not nearly as good - again - according to friends and fam).

Service was friendly and we all enjoyed our visit!

Uncle Bo's - Haleiwa

I love that there is an Uncle Bo's in Haleiwa, which means I don't have to go all the way into town to get some yummy, Uncle Bo's faves that I can enjoy family style.

On the weekends they offer a brunch menu, which means they open at 10am, but we still couldn't resist some of our "usuals":

Boca-Rota
The Boca-Rota is a must - prime rib, mushrooms, and garlic cheesy bread.  Such an indulgence!

Bo's Big Nachos (toppings are separate)

The Bo's Big Nachos is another popular fave.  Won Ton Chips (served separately) come with kalua pork, ham, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and lots of cheese!

Spinach Artichoke Dip

The Spinach Artichoke Dip also comes with a generous serving of Won Ton Chips (separately).

Fish & Chips

The Fish & Chips came with 4 pieces of breaded mahi, which I thought were small for the price we paid, but still good.

Uncle Bo's Kalua Pig Fried Rice
The kids loved the Fried Rice!

Matsumoto Shave Ice

A couple of months into the pandemic, we ventured out to Matsumoto Shave Ice.   Travel restrictions meant tourists were limited, so that resulted in no line at Matsumoto's.

We went again recently, this time getting there when it opened, since we didn't know if there would be a long line with visitors now traveling to the island.

Fortunately, there was just a very short line, and we were in and out in 3 minutes.

Rainbow

For our fam, shave ice with ice cream in the middle is a must.  My oldest always goes for a Rainbow Shave Ice, and my other two kids seem to pick whatever flavors pop into their head, even if they don't really go together.

On this occasion, my youngest chose Grape, Cherry, and Cotton Candy, while my middle son went for Root Beer, Bubble Gum, and Strawberry.

When we passed by later in the morning, there were lots of people standing or sitting around eating their shave ice, but still no line.

What to Eat While on the North Shore of Oahu

Since tourism is virtually shut down thanks to COVID-19 and the mandatory 14-day self-quarantine for incoming travelers (incl. local residents), a lot of residents such as ourselves have taken this opportunity to go to places around the island that are normally flooded with tourists.  One such area is the North Shore.

Our first stop to  any visit to the North Shore is at Paalaa Kai Mini-Mart. It has a lot of prepared foods that are ideal for taking to the beach.  Many people say this is the best fried chicken on Oahu.

I discovered the Korean vegetable pancake last year and I've been buying this ever since.

After the beach, we headed to Matsumoto's Shave Ice. Usually the line is out the door and resembles a line that you would see at Disneyland, but since there are no tourists, the line was much shorter. One of my sons loves to order a "traffic light" colored shave ice (that's what he calls it) with mochi balls.

For me, I prefer to snack on an acai bowl from Island Vintage Coffee which is a few steps away from Matsumoto's.

Before heading home, we ventured to nearby Waialua  town to check out the Waialua General Store, at the suggestion of a friend.  She said the cascarons (Filipino deep fried mochi balls) and poke were outstanding, and she was right!

We are putting Waialua General Store on our list of places to stop at whenever we go to the North Shore, and we will also be recommending this to anyone who asks us where to eat while on the North Shore!

Matsumoto Shave Ice

While driving through Haleiwa, we noticed there was no line at Matsumoto Shave Ice, so we decided to indulge.

Rainbow

Grape, Cherry, Banana

White Cake, Strawberry, Blue Raspberry
We were in and out in mere minutes!

There are plastic shields to separate staff from customers, and there is no courtyard seating anymore, so you'll have to enjoy your shave ice in the car.

Uncle Bo's Haleiwa

I recently went to dinner at Uncle Bo's - Haleiwa - the first time since my initial visit when they opened up three years ago!

Boca-Rota

Meat Lovers Pizza

Hawaiian Style (minus the mushrooms)

Uncle Bo's Fish Tacos

Yobo Wings

Half Oriental Chicken Salad
Never Ever Garlic Rib-Eye

Warmed Fudge Brownie a la mode

Hobo's

The Boca-Rota is still a fave - strips of prime rib served with garlic cheesy-bread, sauteed mushrooms, and mozzarella.

The Never Ever Garlic Rib-Eye is "Must Try" according to the menu.  It's organic, grass-fed, with no antibiotics or hormones.

The pizzas took the longest to be served, but they were both tasty.  The kids loved the pizzas!

The Yobo Wings were Korean-style, and very flavorful.

For dessert we ordered the ever-popular Hobo's (taro beignets served with a Frangelico American Honey sauce), as well as the Brownie (so fudgy and delish!).

Service was great from start to finish, and even with our party of 10, we still had some leftover food!

Most of the items we ate family-style, but a couple of dishes (the fish tacos and rib-eye) were primarily eaten by one or two people.

Uncle Bo's Pupu Bar & Grill is a great place for family or group dining!

Recently-Opened in Haleiwa: Fatboy's

Fatboy's recently opened in Haleiwa Store Lots.  It's been a very long while since I last went to a Fatboy's.  We've catered from them a few times, and I knew they had great Garlic Chicken, but I was eager to try new menu items.

Local Style Fried Saimin

Hamboyrger with Cheese and French Fries

Moa Moa Moa

Mini Bento
The Fried Saimin, which included SPAM, fish cake, and green onions, was pretty good.  My middle son kept asking for more, but my husband thought it was lacking flavor.

The Moa Moa Moa - Chicken Three Ways - Garlic, Teri, and Katsu, was a hit with the fam.  All the different types of chicken were so delicious, but my fave was the Teri Chicken.  I'd definitely order that again.

The Mini Bento included garlic chicken, teriyaki beef, and a hot dog.  It was a bit pricey at $7.49.

Overall, the food was great and so was the service.

I hope to be back soon to try out their breakfast!

Rajanee Thai Haleiwa

Rajanee Thai is one of my favorite Thai restaurants, and our family recently dined at the Haleiwa location, which just opened up a few months ago.

Satay Chicken

Spring Rolls

Bangkok Night Noodles

Panang Curry with Chicken

Thai Fried Rice with Chicken

Everything we ordered was so delicious!

The Spring Rolls were stuffed with veggies and noodles, and served with a plum sauce.  They did not disappoint!

Neither did the Satay Chicken, which had a subtle coconut flavor.  It was tender and juicy!

The Panang Curry was really good, and so was the Thai Fried Rice, which had eggs, onions, and chicken mixed throughout.

My favorite dish, however, was the Bangkok Night Noodles.  Garlic rice noodles were sauteed with eggs, bean sprouts, chicken, and green onions.  It was bursting with flavor!

Our family of five ate everything up - no leftovers!

We were the first ones in the restaurant, thankfully, because it eventually was a full house.

The power went out earlier in the day, so the food took a while to get to everyone's table, but our server was great and we could tell she and everyone working in the restaurant were working really hard.

If you're in the Haleiwa area craving Thai food, be sure to stop at Rajanee Thai!

Matsumoto Shave Ice

We recently went to Matsumoto Shave Ice for the first time since they opened up in their new room at Haleiwa Store Lots (their original building is currently being renovated).

Surprisingly, there was a very short line (just two people), but the line quickly grew to a "typical" Matsumoto Shave Ice line - snaking out the door.

Fun photo op

Rainbow Shave Ice

My son opted for a Rainbow Shave Ice - Strawberry, Pineapple, and Lemon.

For a small serving, it was a generous serving, and at just $2.50 - it's a great deal!

One thing I noticed from our last visit is that they now offer shave ice in bowls (no more cone holders), which is great for the kids, since the cones can get very messy.

There is also a lot more parking, more benches so people can sit and enjoy their shave ice, and even new restrooms nearby - especially helpful to clean the hands of the little ones.

Matsumoto's is definitely a great spot to get an inexpensive cool treat!

Teddy's Bigger Burgers - A New Addition to Haleiwa

I love Teddy's Bigger Burgers.  Yes, the food is on the pricey side, but it's so good!  We recently went to the just-opened location at Haleiwa Store Lots.

Kilauea Fire

Crispy Chicken Sandwich

Kids Corn Dog

Umami Fries

Kids Burger

For a burger joint, I think Teddy's offers some of the best Crispy Chicken Sandwiches on the island.   The potato bun, the crispy-on-the-outside tender-on-the-inside chicken, and the fresh toppings make for a really great sandwich.

My husband had the Kilauea Fire Burger - topped with Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Onion Rings, and Kilauea Fire Sauce.  My husband loved it, and even added more Kilauea Fire Sauce to make it spicier!

The Umami Fries were delicious - fries topped with garlic butter, furikake, and a sriracha aioli.  Talk about a salty and spicy indulgence!

Kids Meals come with a side and a drink for just $5.99, and my kids were full and satisfied after eating their lunches.

The restaurant dining room is a bit on the warm side, but thankfully it was a breezy day (and there is outdoor seating).  Service was friendly and the food was very good.

Teddy's Bigger Burgers is a nice addition to the Haleiwa area!

Bubbies Mochi Ice Cream from Whaler's General Store

My kids have never had Mochi Ice Cream before, so while at Haleiwa Store Lots, we took them to Whaler's General Store so they could try some of Bubbies' Mochi Ice Cream.

So many flavors!

They offer several flavors to choose from, and even offer samples. We ended up getting
Strawberry Dark Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Mango.

The bite sizes treats were delicious, and we can't wait to try other flavors, as well as the other local foods Whaler's General Store carries.
