Tim Ho Wan Waikiki revisited

I  haven't been back to Tim Ho Wan since my first visit in May 2018. What brought me back today was a $50 voucher that my hubby had won in an Instagram contest sponsored by the restaurant. He was nice enough to give me the voucher, so I invited one of my BFFs to join me for lunch one weekday afternoon.

Since the voucher had no cash value, we made sure to order at least $50 worth of goodies. Here's what we selected:

My favorite dishes of the day were the noodles and the baked bbq pork buns! Thank you Tim Ho Wan Waikiki for the contest winnings! We walked out of the restaurant with happy tummies!

Sweet Home Glad

Fried Sweet Potato

My wonderful aunt invited me to lunch on a workday, and instead of the usual places we go to together (Sushi King, Minato's), I guided her to a restaurant called Sweet Home Glad. It is located on South King Street next to Dagon, across the street from Flowers by Jr. Lou & T florist.  I knew my aunt would love this place because the food is good and ridiculously cheap. 

Many of their menu items can be ordered on small plates at $3.25 each. This is great if you like to eat a variety of items.  My aunt and I decided to order a couple of small plates in addition to our main entrees: mochiko chicken salad and fried sweet potato (pictured above).

For our entrees, my aunt ordered the New York Steak plate.  Look at the size of the steak they give you - an entire filet for only $8.75!

I felt like eating something healthy, so I opted for the steamed fish filet. No where else can you get this much fish for only $6.75.

I also ordered a plate of beef chow fun to-go for my sons, and this was under $7.  What a deal.

The folks who work here are really friendly, and the food comes out quickly, making it an ideal place for lunch during the work week. 

They have a handful of parking spots behind the building (turn into the alley next to Dagon) and park in one of the yellow-marked stalls.

Asian Mix

Every Sunday, I see Asian Mix's add in the Dining Out section. They run a special on one menu item for the week.  This week their Beef Chow Fun is on special for $6.95 (normally $9.50).  I love chow fun, so I decided to pick up a plate of their beef chow fun on the way home from work yesterday.  

It was delicious and very plentiful.  It was sit-down restaurant quality food at a fast-food price.  Service was friendly and my order was ready in less than 5 minutes.  

Asian Mix specializes in Chinese food but they also offer Japanese bentos and they even have a tea bar called "Tea Time" that sells Taiwanese-style drinks.  I've tried their bubble drinks in the past and thought they were better than average.  

Asian Mix is a great place to pick up a mixed plate for lunch or dinner for the family.  And don't forget to get a bubble drink for the road.

Ming's Canton Food

After doing some shopping in the Pearl Highlands Shopping Center, our family headed to the food court for lunch.

I ended up at Ming's Canton Food after seeing a special for Oyster Sauce Chicken on Crispy Noodle (for just over $5).

It was a generous portion of chicken and noodles.

Compared to other restaurants' Oyster Sauce Chicken, I thought it was okay, but I've had a lot better.  I would have preferred if the chicken were boneless, and it didn't seem as tasty as other restaurants', but it was reasonably priced and lasted me for several meals.

Mauka Chinese Cuisine

We were recently invited to a friend's 40th birthday dinner at Mauka Chinese Cuisine.

The hosts ordered a 5-course dinner menu.

I'm not sure how much the restaurant charges for the 5-course menu, but during lunch they do offer really good, inexpensive plates.

The portions do seem small compared to other Chinese restaurants, but overall the food was tasty and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
