Flour + Butter Bakery

Flour + Butter Bakery opened up a few years ago, and we were delighted they were a Hawaii Mom Blog Treat Yourself luncheon sponsor.

They donated the cutest (and yummiest) cupcakes to our event:

When I went to pick up the cupcakes, my kids couldn't resist the confections, so we bought:

Cotton Candy + Fruity Pebbles Macarons

Pistachio + PB&J Macarons

The Chocoholic Cupcake
The little shop delivers such delicious treats!

Elote Fries at La Tour Cafe

Last week I was invited to a media event at La Tour Cafe, but I was unable to make it.  When I saw the social media posts of the event, I suffered a bit of FOMO, especially when I saw photos of a huge platter of the new Elote Fries!

So a few days ago I went to the Pearl City location and ordered the Elote Fries!

Elote Fries
Seasoned fries were topped with a cotija & sour cream sauce, charred corn, jalapeno, cotija cheese, red onions, and cilantro.

So good!  I loved the cheesy topping, and I just love cilantro.  I nearly ate all the fries myself!

Other items ordered:

Mac & Cheese

Pastrami Dip

Pepperoni Pizza

Tomato Basil Soup
OREO, Chocolate, Mint Chocolate, American Macarons
I enjoy the food at La Tour Cafe, and I hope they keep the Elote Fries on the menu!

Macarons by Tiffany

If you are a macaron super fan, you most likely know about Hawaii's very own Instagram sensation, Macarons by Tiffany.  Usually booked months in advance, her homemade macarons are most definitely worth the wait.

Follow her on Instagram @macaronsbytiffany and either put yourself on the waitlist or email her when she's accepting orders.  She currently has a 3 dozen maximum at $21 a dozen and pick up is only at her home in Makakilo.

I had a hard time choosing from her list of available flavors which include fruity pebbles, cookie butter, reese's peanut butter cup, butterfingers and more.  But I narrowed it down to oreo, strawberry cheesecake and s'mores.  My favorite was the s'mores!  I probably ate the entire dozen by myself while my kids worked on the other two flavors.  Tiffany's macarons are so delicious and perfectly consistent!

Currently she is only available on Oahu, but Vegas residents you are in luck.  Tiffany and her twin sister Kristy are expanding the business and Kristy will be taking those amazing macs to Las Vegas at the end of the year.

Visit Japan and Singapore: Laduree

Ever since my first visit to Laduree in NYC, I fell in love with the luxurious French maker of macarons and when I visit a new city, I check to see if it home to a Laduree location.  While each location is uniform in the soft green pastel decor and offers a rainbow variety of macarons, I've found some nice distinctions.

In the Singapore location, there was a special Laduree macaron offered.  The chocolate macaron was decorated with 22 carats gold leaf.  They advertised that it was the universal symbol of success, beauty and eternity and was known to give a higher IQ, and possesses the legendary powers contributing to a long and vital life.  But really, they had me at special.

I forked over the $7.90 Singapore dollars which roughly converts to about $6 US dollars and took a bite (after pictures of course!).  While the chocolate macaron was perfect and divine, I didn't care at all for the metallic taste of the gold leaf.  There goes increasing my IQ.

As for the Shinjuku, Japan location, I was delighted that they served ice cream!  I had a refreshing chocolate soft serve topped with raspberry sauce and raspberry macaron crumble.  I thought the macaron would be chewy, but they were crisp and gave my dessert a nice crunch.  What a genius idea for broken macaron cookies!

A visit to Laduree is always a treat for my senses and a fun way to indulge.  Looking forward to more visits!

Macarons from Sweet Treats By Kris

I had the best Monday morning. I got to the office and my co-worker had coffee waiting for me.  Then, another co-worker pops in to drop off two white pirie mangoes!  I'm seriously on top of the world.  Minutes later I get a See's dark chocolate almond bar and a thank you note.  It couldn't get any better, but then I get a special delivery: a macaron sampler pack of a dozen different flavors plus a super cute bear shaped macaron!  Yay!!

The macarons are from a friend who wanted to get some feedback on the flavors.  I held out and waited until I got home so my kids and I could do a proper taste test.

Taste testing is serious business!

First off, the macarons are both so pretty and delicious! The cookie itself is sweet and chewy and the fillings are full of flavor!  My favorites were strawberry and chocolate while Lauren loved butterfinger, red velvet, and coffee.  Cade preferred the guava and the bear shaped macaron.  Although we all had our favorites, we honestly liked them all except for the green tea macaron.  But that's only because the three of us don't like anything green tea flavored.

Other available flavors include lemon crunch, mocha, cookies and cream, and so much more.  A dozen of the same flavor macarons start at $20.  Visit her Facebook page for more info or email sweettreatsbykris@gmail.com

Visit Washington D.C.: The Sweet Lobby

My friend and I had one day to see Washington D.C. and had decided to dine at restaurant Rose's Luxury after a day full of sightseeing.  One of the Yelp reviewers mentioned the Sweet Lobby was nearby the restaurant so we added it to our itinerary.

We found it very easily and were really excited to hear it was a previous winner of Food Network's Cupcake Wars!  The bakery's offerings were all mouth watering, but I was able to narrow it down to a lemon cupcake and a peanut butter and jelly macaron.  Okay, it's true that I'd eat anything with a cream cheese frosting, but the lemon cupcake was exceptional.  The cake was moist and the frosting was just the right amount of sweet.  The macaron was delicious as well and it was nice to know that their macarons feature California almonds and are gluten free.

If you are lucky enough to be in the area, definitely stop here.

So many delicious cupcake choices!

Eating this should totally be considered multi-tasking!

Visit New York: Laduree, Home of the Famous Macarons

Ladurée is a French luxury bakery and sweets maker house created in 1862.  They are one of the best known makers of macarons in the world.  Since I’ve never been to Paris, a stop at Ladurée was a must on my 2 day trip to New York.

I loved everything about the Ladurée shop in SoHo.  From its pastel green storefront to the show cases filled with beautifully decorated pastries and macarons.  The desserts are mesmerizing, but if you can manage to walk by you will find a café with small tables and blue velvet seating where you and a friend can chat over lunch or tea.

In my case it was tea.  The tea selection is wonderful and I enjoyed a cup of black coconut tea with a lemon macaron.  It was all so sophisticated, ladylike, and French.  I loved it.  This would definitely be a place I would frequent as often as possible.

La Tour Cafe - Pearl City

I recently met a friend at the La Tour Cafe in Pearl City, which opened up less than a year ago.
Top: Kobe French Dip; Bottom Left: Crispy Chicken; Bottom Right: Chicken Tenders with Crispy Pomme Frites

Macarons! Top: Chocolate, Blueberry Cheesecake, Red Velvet
I had the Crispy Chicken Sandwich, which consisted of honey-glazed chicken, coleslaw, and a spicy aioli. I thought it was just okay, as the honey was a bit too overpowering for my taste.

However, both my friend and I thought the Chicken Tenders were really good (and for the price they give a lot!). We both ordered the Chicken Tenders for our kids, and we ended up eating a lot of the fries and chicken ourselves!

Of course I couldn't leave La Tour without getting some macarons for my kiddos, and they sure enjoyed them!

La Tour Cafe is definitely a nice spot to have lunch!

If I Can Make Macarons So Can You

My kids looooove macarons.  Which would be fine, but they can throw back a dozen easily and those little things are expensive!  So in true practical mommy form, I decided to make my own. Feeling ambitious, I googled "easy macaron recipe" and found out that all I needed were 1 cup finely ground almonds, 1 2/3 cup powdered sugar, 3 egg whites, and 1/4 cup white sugar.

This is my third try and it's getting easier every time. The most time consuming part is sifting the ground almonds and powdered sugar together.  It takes a while.

But you want it to look like this.

In another bowl, seperate the egg whites.

Beat until foamy.

Add white sugar and beat until you get soft peaks. I use a handheld mixer and this takes me at least 10 minutes so I do some squats.  Like two and then I check Instagram.

If you want to add food coloring, do it here. Use gel food coloring as the water based ones can mess with the consistency of the egg whites.

Next, add the ground almonds and powdered sugar mixture a little at a time. I add it in 3 parts. Don't over mix. About 30 strokes total.

Pipe the batter onto parchment paper in rounds, leaving space in between.  This is where I get lazy. For uniformity you can trace circles, but as you can see, I just wing it.

Let it sit out at room temperature until they form a hard skin on top. The recipe says about 1 hour, but I've done as short as 30 minutes and they still turn out.  Do the dishes.

Preheat your oven to 285 degrees.  These cookies are finicky so I recommend baking them one sheet at a time.  I bake a little longer than 10 minutes. I press on them slightly to see if the bottom gives. They should pop off the parchment paper easily.

My son and I like the macarons plain and can just eat them unsandwiched.  My daughter likes Nutella in the middle or I'll mix crunchy peanut butter and Nutella as a filling. That suits me just fine, but one day I'd like to make a lemon or pineapple filling.

But for now, these will do just fine in our household.

Get the recipe here.

La Tour Cafe

I've been wanting to try La Tour Café for a while now, and finally had a chance to when I, along with my youngest son, met Hawaii Mom Blog contributor Nat there for lunch recently.
From top left clockwise: Pomme Frites, Turkey and Sundried Tomato Panini, Macarons, Chicken Pesto Pizza

From top left clockwise: Bluberry Cheesecake Macaron, Strawberry Macaron, Red Velvet Macaron, Chocolate Ooze Cake Macaron, Mint Chocolate Macaron, Chocolate Macaron.

I thought the Panini was really good (my son loved it too).  I thought the pizza was just "okay," but my son really liked it.

Of course, no visit to La Tour Café would be complete without dessert.

They're known for their macarons, but I ended up getting the Chocolate Ooze Cake.  Nat and I ate it "as is" without it being heated (therefore no chocolate oozing out), but it was still good.

I'm glad I finally got to try La Tour Café, and next time I'll be sure to ask for the Chocolate Ooze cake to be heated!
