Visit Big Island: Residents' Beach House

Even though I've stayed at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai a few times before, it wasn't until my recent stay did I try the Residents' Beach House.

Thai Chicken Salad
The Thai Chicken Salad included Hirabara greens, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, green papaya, mint, and a citrus peanut dressing.  The chicken was a little on the dry side, but the flavor was good.

Garlic Parmesan Fries

It's hard to go wrong with Garlic Parmesan Fries!  They were delish!

Longboard Lager Battered Ono & Chips

We actually got served our food before we had any silverware, and had a very long wait for silverware, unfortunately.  We had to flag down our server as she nor the food runner didn't even notice our silverware was missing.  Other than that, service was overall fine.

The menu is pretty standard for a local resort, but the options were satisfying.

Visit Big Island: NOIO

NOIO is a Japanese restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai that specializes in sushi.  They do offer an omakase experience, but on this visit we opted for the a la carte menu.

Complimentary Miso Soup

Shore Salad
The Shore Salad was comprised of various types of seaweed, such as lepe o Hina and umibudo.  It was very oceanic in flavor.

Yasai Nanban

Black Cod Dolce

My friend loved the Black Cod Dolce.

Hamachi Carpaccio

Sake Chicken
The Sake Chicken was on the dry side, but the broth was very pleasant.
Hotate and Madai Nigiri
The sushi was superb, as expected.
Chocolate Salted Caramel Dorayaki
The Dorayaki, a pancake-like confection with a filling, was served with chilled barley tea.  The server recommended getting some vanilla ice cream to accompany the dorayaki, and I happily obliged.
Sesame Wagashi
The night ended with complimentary Sesame Wagashi.

Definitely opt for seafood / sushi if you plan to dine at NOIO - those dishes were the most favored!

Visit Big Island: ‘Ulu

While at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, we had breakfast at ‘Ulu.  They offer both a breakfast buffet as well as a la carte menu items.  I usually prefer to get a la carte menu items since I never get my money's worth at buffets (as of this post it was $59 per adult).

Hualalai Sunrise Smoothie
The Hualalai Sunrise Smoothie had non-dairy yogurt, orange juice, banana, strawberry, flax, and honey.  It was sweet and refreshing.  I didn't taste much of the honey, but the strawberry and banana flavors were more forward.
Huevos Rancheros
My friend enjoyed the Huevos Rancheros.

Loco Moco

I had the Loco Moco, which consisted of braised short rib (you could also opt for grilled fish), topped with an adobo gravy and served with Ali‘i mushroom fried rice.   I thought the greens were out of place, and the short rib was unfortunately too tough, but the gravy was tasty and I really liked the fried rice.

I'll definitely have to try the Huevos Rancheros next time!

`Ulu Ocean Grill at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai

`Ulu Ocean Grill offers both a breakfast buffet and a la carte menu so you can start your morning off right while at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.

The buffet has been modified for the pandemic (employees stand behind a counter and plexiglass and serve food vs guests serving themselves).

I decided to order a la carte when I dined there for breakfast during my stay.

Breakfast is walk-in only, and fortunately the wait was very minimal.

Paniolo Breakfast Burrito

I had the Paniolo Breakfast Burrito, which also came with a side salad.

I loved this burrito - it was super filling and super stuffed!  A spinach tortilla enveloped eggs, corn, house-made chorizo, and cheese.  I would definitely order this again!  The house-made chorizo gave the burrito a nice bit of heat.
Loco Moco

Service was good, and breakfast at `Ulu was a lovely way to start the day!

Beach Tree at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai

Upon checking into the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, I was famished, so I went to Beach Tree for lunch. Lunch is walk-in only, and fortunately, there was no wait.

Chips & Salsa

I started off with Chips & Salsa (it also came with guacamole) because I was so hungry - I figured this wouldn't take long to get to the table.

And it didn't.  A huge bowl of corn tortilla chips and containers of roasted salsa and guacamole were brought to the table, but shortly thereafter, my entree came too!

Wild Mushroom Pizza

I ordered the Wild Mushroom Pizza, which came with plenty of Ali`i, maitake, and porcini mushrooms.  It was drizzled with truffle oil - so delish!
Chargrilled Burger

The Burger was topped with Provolone, Crispy Prosciutto, and a Calabrian Chili Remoulade.  You could have fries or onion rings, or 50/50 (some of each) as a side.

Our server was very apologetic when she realized I was waiting for a very long time for her to run my credit card to pay for the bill, but overall both the service and food were great.

I passed Beach Tree during dinner time, and it was really crowded.  Advance reservations for dinner is a must!

Visit Hawaii Island: Hualālai Grille

The first night of our stay at the Hualālai Resort we were in the mood for some prime steaks so we headed to the Hualālai Grille, which is located above the club shop overlooking the golf course and ocean.  The restaurant has a causal elegance with the breezy open air ambiance and dark woods decor.

My husband and I both ordered the 6oz filet and he paired his with Alaskan king crab legs.  I was tempted to pair my steak with lobster, but I wanted to make sure I had room for desserts.  I prefer my steak with no additional sauce, but you have your choice of spicy house ketchup, chilichurri, tomato relish, mint sauce, peppercorn, or béarnaise.  The steaks and crab legs were delicious and cooked perfectly!

We decided to splurge and try both of their dessert specials:  a lilikoi tart and a trio of malasada ice cream sandwiches.  The lilikoi filling was very rich and perfectly tart.  I just love the idea of a malasada ice cream sandwich!  Two desserts I love paired so well together.

The service was excellent at the Hualālai Grille and made our dinner exceptional.  The Hualālai Grille is a wonderful traditional American steakhouse.

I love the dark wood tones of the Hualālai Grille.
It was hard to choose from the extensive cocktail menu, but the upside down mojito was a winner.

I loved the lavosh so much I asked for more.

Our delicious steak dinner at the Hualālai Grille.

Two desserts please!

Visit Hawaii Island: Breakfast at 'ULU Ocean Grill

Breakfast at ‘ULU Ocean Grill each morning was definitely a favorite experience during my weekend stay at the beautiful Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Kaʻūpūlehu.  The food is delicious, service is wonderful, and the view is amazing.  I didn’t rush through breakfast as I usually do.  Instead I relaxed and got lost in the view while committing it to memory.
There are two breakfast options at ‘ULU.  You can opt for the buffet or order ala carte.  The first morning we chose the buffet and feasted on hot items and made to order omelets and crepes.  There was an abundance of fresh fruit, pastries, and even a gluten free corner!  We left totally stuffed.

The next morning we decided to order off the menu.  We chose the Meyer lemon ricotta pancakes and the Shellfish Moco (crab cakes, fried eggs, shrimp fried rice, Ali'i mushrooms, and lobster sauce).  Both were amazing and one of the best quality breakfasts I have had.

Dining at 'ULU was definitely a highlight of our stay.  Can't ever get enough of the beautiful view.

Visit Hawaii Island: An Amazing Stay at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka`upulehu

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka`upulehu lobby
Our family's stay at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka`upulehu can be described in a single word - AMAZING!

However, a stay in this spectacular resort did come with some challenges.

For instance, I had to face some tough decisions, such as:

Do I take a relaxing bath in the deep soak tub, a stand-up shower, an aromatherapy steam shower, or take an outdoor shower?

Outdoor shower
Do we take the kids to the Keiki Pool, the Sea Shell Pool, the King's Pond, or the Ocean Pool, or do I sneak away to the adults-only Palm Cove Pool or quiet Beach Tree Pool?

Beach Tree Pool
Do I walk around to enjoy the natural beauty of the resort's grounds, or do I rest and relax in the magnificent `Ohana Suite?

Nature's beauty
All kidding aside, from the moment I contacted the resort inquiring about a stay, until the moment we were dropped off at the airport, service was fantastic, and our entire experience at the resort was one that I'll never forget.

We were met at the airport by Mark, who assisted with retrieving and transporting our luggage to our vehicle - a Cadillac Escalade driven by Tom.  Tom offered us some water and oshibori, and we were soon on our way to the resort.

Had I not asked how long Tom was with the Four Seasons, I would've assumed he's been there for years because of how knowledgeable he was about the property and how passionate he was about his job.  Imagine my surprise when he told me he started just a few months ago in a management training program!

As Tom talked more and more about Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, my excitement just grew and grew as we approached the property.

Upon arrival at the resort we were greeted with lei from Lindsey and warm hugs from Cindy.

We were then escorted to the lobby where our entire family sat down for some refreshments while Lindsey went over a few things with me about the resort, the restaurants, and our suite.

Welcome refreshments and oshibori
Shortly thereafter we all hopped onto a golf cart and were driven around the resort for a quick tour.

Getting a tour on a golf cart
Soon we were in the beautiful `Ohana Suite.
The living area (yes, that's a telescope on the right!)
We were in awe with how large the suite was, as well as all the amenities, services, and welcome gifts that came with the suite!

Mahalo for the Big Island Candies Cookies!
The decor was warm and inviting, with kid-friendly touches that made us feel at home (you can read more about the `Ohana suite here).

As much as I wanted to stay in the room all day long, we only had a weekend at the resort, so we tried to explore as much as we could.

During our weekend stay we checked out the Ka‘upulehu Cultural Center, Kids for All Seasons, and Hale Kula.

Ka‘upulehu Cultural Center
We dined at `ULU Ocean Grill and Beach Tree Restaurants, as well as by the pool.

The kids had a blast in the Keiki Pool and King's Pond. There are so many pools to choose from, and while there you'll get treated to ice cold water and complimentary refreshments. They offer sunscreen and lotion, sunglasses cleaning, and you can also borrow some reading material.

There are also many activity areas where the kids would play ping pong, Konane (aka Hawaiian checkers), and other games, and I loved that there were lots of Hawaiian elements all throughout the resort, such as the Hawaiian Star Compass, and the Golden Cloak `O Kamehameha feather cape in the lobby.

On property there is also the Jack Nicklaus signature Hualalai Golf Course, business services, complimentary self-laundry, tennis courts, fitness facilities, boutiques, and more!

In your room you'll find a Resort Activities daily guide, which includes a variety of activities, such as Kona Coffee tasting, Pilates, Shark Adventures, and more (fee applies to some activities).

Golf course
There is so much to see and do at the resort.  Whether you're Kama`aina looking to indulge in a weekend getaway, a couple on a honeymoon, or friends on a golf trip, a stay at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai will make it obvious why it was ranked number one in Hawaii and number twenty-two in the world on Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards in 2014.

Who knew such luxury could be built in the middle of a lava field?

Colorful sky

Everyone who assisted on our last day was great as well - from Tony at the reception desk to our driver, Edwin, and once again Tom, who we saw upon leaving.

The aloha spirit that all of the employees exuded, as well as the beauty of the resort, really made it hard to leave.

A great big MAHALO to everyone who made our stay the most amazing ever.

A hui hou kākou!

Picturesque views everywhere

Thank you to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai for offering a media rate and upgrade for the room and hosting our transportation to/from the resort.  All gratuities were paid on our own.

Visit Hawaii Island: The `Ohana Suite at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka`upulehu

Normally when I write about hotels I briefly go over the type of room we stayed in, but after staying in the `Ohana Suite at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka‘upulehu, it was obvious that a post solely focused on the suite was a must - there is just so much to say about this suite!

Both paths lead to the `Ohana Suite on the ground level
Two `Ohana Suites are available on property, one near the Sea Shell Crescent, the other near the Beach Tree Crescent, providing ample room for families staying at the resort.

Our suite was near the Sea Shell Crescent, which was the perfect location since it was close to the Keiki Pool, and my kids could run back into the room from the pool whenever they needed a potty break.
So close to the Keiki Pool!
The suite itself was large and cozy, with a living area complete with a table and chairs, a sofa (which housekeeping converted into a bed during turndown service), and a flat screen television.  Kids' beds were also in the living area.

The large, bathroom included double sinks, a deep soak tub, a stand-up shower, and an outdoor shower.

Clockwise from top left: Shower, steam shower; outdoor shower, deep soak tub
There was also a guest powder room and a steam shower.

Throughout the bathrooms were Kawili Body Care products, a Four Seasons exclusive in partnership with L'Oeil du Vert.   I loved how the resort offered hand soap and body wash - two amenities that I normally have to pack on my own.

The bedroom included a king-size bed with a custom bamboo canopy headboard, a second-flat screen TV, a writing table, and seating area.

There were numerous features in the suite that excited the kids, such as an Xbox Kinect and games, a telescope, and bean bag chairs.

The kids loved the bean bag chairs!

Just outside the sliding glass doors of our suite was a large patio with outdoor seating, and a beautiful lawn where kids could play (or in my youngest son's case, chase after bubbles).

Chasing bubbles
There were two closets (one walk-in), as well as plenty of drawer space, a refrigerator, drinking glasses, lots of outlets to recharge our smart phones, hooks (to hold clothes, towels, robes, and lei), ceiling fans, light dimmers, hand-towel holders (at a convenient height for my kiddos),  and so many other features that made our stay convenient and inviting.

Available for use were robes, hotel slippers, and even a tote bag perfect for the pool or beach, and with the suite we also received complimentary Wi-Fi, newspaper, and transportation from/to the airport.

I loved the warm and inviting decor, as well as the natural elements and nature-inspired elements found throughout the suite.

Love this lamp!
Housekeeping would come twice daily.  In addition to cleaning and replacing towels, they'd refill the ice bucket and water pitcher during the day, and in the evening they'd also set up a mini coffee bar to to enjoy the next morning, as well as set up the water pitcher, remote, and a reading light on one of the bedside tables.

Hualalai offers 243 guest rooms and suites, so whether you're traveling as a couple, a family, or with a large group of people, there are plenty of accommodations to choose from.

If you will be staying at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka`upulehu with your `ohana, contact the resort at 808-325-8000 to get more information about the `Ohana Suite or other room types to suit your needs.

Thank you to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai for offering a media rate for our stay; gratuities were paid on my own.
