Made-to-order Custom Salads at Pieology

I have been a fan of Pieology ever since they debuted in Hawaii in 2016. I love ability to create my own custom pizza, and it's created in front of my own eyes so that I can request more of this, less of that, etc.  

Today I decided to try the made-to-order custom SALAD, instead of a pizza.  Yes, SALAD. If you know me well, you know that I rarely if ever order a salad at a restaurant (California Pizza Kitchen is the only exception).  

But in an effort to eat more greens and protein, I decided to give this salad a try, and I am now a FAN!

For $8.95, I got a hearty salad consisting of romaine lettuce and spinach, mozzarella cheese, pineapple, bacon, all-natural chicken, kalua pork, salami, sun-dried tomatoes, dried cranberries, and croutons. 

As you can see, I went heavy on the protein - gotta get my money's worth and also get my GAINS!

Since I knew my sons would discard the crusts of their all-cheese pizza, I was still able to get bits and pieces of pizza with my salad.  I'm definitely going to be ordering these custom salads on future visits!

Cake Couture leaving Aina Haina Shopping Center

It was a sad day when my friend told me that Cake Couture had announced that their last day at Aina Haina Shopping Center would be on April 6, 2019.  They've been selling their decadent cupcakes in Aina Haina for over 12 years, and it's sad to see them close their brick and mortar.  I've been a fan of their cupcakes - the frosting is always flavorful and the cake is always moist.

They stated on their announcement that they will be rebranding as an online establishment. It's good to know that they aren't going away for good, however I will miss the convenience of being able to stop at the shop on the spur of the moment to buy just one cupcake (OR FOUR!).

Gem's Take on Pieology

My husband and kids love pizza, so I was eager for them to try out Pieology after reading Nat's post.

We arrived about 10 minutes before opening, and decided to sit near the side entrance. While waiting, a line started to grow at the front entrance, and by the time Pieology opened up a few minutes after 11am, the line never seemed to stop!

And for good reason - an 11.5" crust with unlimited toppings is just $10.95!  What a deal!

Nat summed up how easy it is to create your own pizza, and it really is that easy.  The only hard part is narrowing down your choices!

House Red, Mozzarella, Canadian Bacon

Fiery Buffalo Chicken + Jalapenos

House Red Sauce, Mozzarella, mushrooms, Kalua Pork, SPAM

Pesto, Mozzarella, Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, SPAM, Olives, Spinach

I did not make my own pizza - I decided to just try a piece of everyone else's pizza.

Each pizza was yummy.  The crust was thin and crispy, and each combo was really good!

My boys picked out their own toppings, and my husband ordered the Smokin' Buffalo Chicken, which included a buffalo sauce, chicken, gorgonzola, mozzarella, cilantro, and olive oil, and added Jalapeno Peppers, Bacon, and Red Onion.

With four pizzas for the five of us, we still had lots of leftovers.  Three pizzas would've been enough for us.

Service was friendly, and although the line never died down the entire time we were dining at Pieology, it did move fairly quickly.

Today's consumers love to have it their way, which is why "build your own" dining concepts are sprouting up everywhere.  The newest "build your own" eatery to hit Oahu is Pieology, a California-based pizza chain that let's you build your own pizza from "the crust up".  It recently opened in Aina Haina Shopping Center, and it's a huge hit.

Creating your own custom pizza is an easy 5 step process:

1) Choose your crust

2) Choose your sauce

3) Choose your cheese and meats

4) Choose your toppings

5) Add an After Bake 

The best part is that everything from the sauce to the after bakes are UNLIMITED in quantity.  Want extra sauce? Ask for it! Want more cheese? Ask for it! They tend to go conservative, so you need to speak up if you want more than what they put on there.  

At Pieology, their 11.5" personal pizzas are artisan style, so the crust is thin and crispy. That being said, you may want to think twice about loading up your pizza, because the thin crust can only hold so much. I saw a few people eating their pizza with a fork and knife because their pizza fell apart from being too top-heavy.

To those with special dietary needs pay close attention - they have a killer gluten-free crust ($2 additional charge) and dairy-free cheese!

On my first visit, here's what I created:

Custom Pizza $10.95

I asked for the house red sauce, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, chicken, pepperoni, bacon, onions, spinach, sun dried tomatoes. 

For my boys, I ordered one of Pieology's "Easy Cheesy" pizzas.

Pieologist's Easy Cheesy $8.95

On my second visit, I decided to split my pizza with the boys, so I had them put red sauce/mozzarella/Parmesan on one half, and pesto/chicken/bacon/tomatoes/onions/mushrooms/spinach on the other half.  This worked out great for the three of us.  

Custom built pizza $10.95

During peak meal times the line to order is long, but it moves along nicely and you'll be glad you waited, once you sink your teeth in your custom built pizza. 

Custom pizzas are $10.95 (+$2 for gluten-free crust). 

They also have salads (custom built or signature) and beer on tap.

Jack's Restaurant

It doesn't matter how far we have to drive - if a place is known for serving good breakfasts, I'm there!  So one weekend we took the family to Jack's Restaurant in Aina Haina Shopping Center, which is on the other end of the island from where we live.

From top left clockwise: Jack's Special Biscuit (served with Whipped Honey Butter on the side); Griddle Cake & Omelet, Grilled Cheese, Kim Chee Fried Rice

The little restaurant is quite a popular spot. It was packed when we arrived, so we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table.

I had the Kim Chee Fried Rice, which comes with a biscuit.  The fried rice was a very generous serving, and it was indeed spicy because of the kim chee.  The biscuit was good, especially with the honey butter.

Service was quick and friendly, and I would definitely make the drive out to Aina Haina Shopping Center again just to eat at Jack's!
