I randomly made reservations for The Keg Steakhouse + Bar for our first dinner at Whistler, based on the fact that they have a kids' menu and reservations could be made via OpenTable.
Fortunately we did make reservations ahead of time as the wait when we arrived for those who didn't have reservations was 45 minutes.
Complimentary Bread
Kids Keg Mini Burgers with Cheese
Kids Chicken Strips
Kids Shaved Prime Rib Sliders
French Onion Soup
Tuna Tacos
Kids Ice Cream
Mini Mango Brulee
I was not very hungry, so I ordered the French Onion Soup for dinner. A beef broth infused with Sherry, loaded with Spanish Onions, and topped with Swiss and Parmesan was fantastic!
My husband ordered the tuna tacos - ahi atop a bed of cabbage slaw and cilantro, and served with a jalapeno maple aioli.
Each of the kids meals we ordered was $11 and includes a drink and ice cream for dessert.
For my dessert, I opted for the mini mango brulee. The mini size was perfect, and I'm not usually a creme brulee fan, but this dessert had a pleasant mango flavor, and I loved the caramelized crust!
All of the food was great, but prior to us getting our food, another server ended up spilling a soft drink all over me. My pants & shirt, purse, jacket, and my son's jacket (which was next to me) was soaked.
The server felt terrible and continuously apologized. Accidents happen! When we got the check we noticed they gave a 20% discount on my soup. I wasn't expecting anything from the incident (although a few people said I should've gotten a free meal), but the discount was a nice gesture, and I'm just glad the server didn't spill alcohol or hot soup on me!
Service was great, but slowed down once we got our food.
Despite that, and the spilled soft drink incident, we still had a nice, delicious meal.
We always try to find a playground whenever we travel, and while in Whistler, the kids were happy to see that there was a nice playground in the middle of Olympic Plaza in Whistler Village.
There are slides, a spinning disc, rope ladders, sensory equipment, and more.
When we went on a weekend, it was packed with kids. On a weekday, after some rain, there were hardly any kids.
No matter when you go, the kids are sure to have a great time!
One of our tour guides had advised us that Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub is a great family-friendly restaurant, even at dinner (some places in Whistler don't allow kids from the afternoon), so that's where we dined on our last evening in Whistler.
Buffalo Chicken Schnitzel
Inside the sandwich
Rosemary Garlic Chips with Bacon Chive Mayo
Kids Fish & Chips
Kids Grilled Cheese
Kids Macaroni & Cheese
Alberta Lamb Curry
The chicken schnitzel sandwich was very good. It consisted of a crispy, thin piece of chicken, lettuce, tomato, pickled red onion (love picked red onions!), and buffalo and ranch sauces.
I upgraded to the Rosemary Garlic fries with Bacon Chive Mayo. I'm not sure why I did, since I actually am not a fan of rosemary, so I didn't really care for the fries, but I did eat up my kids' fries!
My husband had the lamb curry - lamb meatballs, brown basmati brice, almonds, and cilantro in a spiced sauce, which he thought was good.
The kids meal portions were nicely-sized.
The pub was crowded, and we did see several families. It's a seat-yourself restaurant, and luckily we found a large table to fit our family of 5.
Service was great, and Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub was indeed a great spot for dinner!
Our last night in Whistler ended with a bang, literally, with the Fire and Ice Show.
During the Winter weekly show, skiers and snowboards jump through a ring of fire while doing cool twists, turns, and tricks.
We arrived at the Skier's Plaza about 30 minutes before the show was to start, and found a spot right at the front, against the barriers.
It was freezing!!!
But we braved the cold, and waited patiently until the show began.
While waiting for the show to start, the athletes did some practice runs, while an emcee gave away prizes for answering trivia questions. Then finally, 30 minutes after the show was to have started, a few fireworks went off, there was a performance by fire dancers, the ring was lit up in flames, and the skiers and snowboarders did their thing.
Unfortunately, although we had a spot right up front, a fire dancer was positioned right in front of us, blocking our view (and preventing us from taking decent photos/videos) for most of the show.
It was still fun to watch the skiers and snowboarders show off their skills, especially when the ring of fire would erupt in fireworks.
The show ended with a nice fireworks show, and the audience members who stuck around until the very end could give high fives to the athletes.
Because the show takes place at the base of the mountain, it's possible to watch from afar, but if you're willing to brave the cold, get to Skier's Plaza about 30 minutes early to find a good spot.
And be sure not to stand in front of the two mounds on either side, which is where the fire dancers will block your view.
The Fire and Ice show runs during the winter season. Be sure to check it out if you're in Whistler next winter!
One of my kids' favorite activities in Whistler was playing at the Olympic Plaza Snow Zone.
It's completely free to enter the snow zone. You can bring your own sled (our friend had bought a cheap sled from a hardware store in the village, and we happened to find one that was buried in the snow at the snow zone, which we ended up leaving with another family), but even if you don't have a sled, the kids will have plenty of fun making snow balls or building a fort.
The Olympic Plaza Snow Zone was a super fun place to spend some time in Whistler!
The morning of our ski lesson, I decided to pick up some quick and easy eats from Ingrid's Village Cafe.
Cranberry Apricot Bar
Organic Blueberry Oat Bar
Lemon Macaroon
Tomato, Cheese Melt with Scrambled Eggs on a Toasted Bun
Toasted Croissant with Ham, Cheese, Tomato, and Egg
The two breakfast sandwiches were huge, and we shared them amongst our family of five. Along with the three bars, we were more than satisfied.
The sandwiches were reasonably-priced and tasty. The bars were $3 each, and were super yummy. My favorite was the Lemon Macaroon.
Ingrid's also offers wraps, burgers, salads, and other deli items.
Ingrid's is a great place to pick up food if you're on the go!
On our first morning in Whistler we ate breakfast at the first spot we stumbled upon that was open - Hot Buns Bakery.
Blueberry Muffin
Breakfast Wrap
Breakfast Crepe
Mediterranean Crepe
Strawberry & Whipped Cream Waffle
I had the Breakfast Wrap, which consisted of eggs, bacon, onions, and potatoes. Unfortunately, there was something in the wrap that I just didn't like. My husband gave it a taste, and said it tasted fine, but there was something in the filling - probably some kind of seasoning, that I didn't care for.
So I ended up switching with my husband, who ordered the Breakfast Crepe stuffed with ham, cheese, and egg, and it was more to my liking.
My middle son loved his Mediterranean Crepe, which was filled with tomatoes, spinach, onions, olives, and feta, and I actually liked this crepe more than the Breakfast Crepe.
My oldest opted for a Blueberry Muffin, and my youngest had a waffle.
The food was basic, yet satisfying, and the service was prompt and friendly.
Hot Buns Bakery was a nice, cozy spot for breakfast.
