Visit Japan: Suntory Whisky Hakushu Distillery

Tasting!

Although I am not a whisky drinker, I was very interested in taking a tour of the Suntory Whisky Hakushu Distillery when my friend suggested it. I had never done something like that in Japan so I was excited to be doing something new.

To visit the distillery, you must make a reservation and for the Monozukuri tour and tasting, you must enter their lottery system. You’ll need to check their website for specific information, but typically the lottery opens about 2 months before. For our March tour, the lottery opened about mid-January. Our group of four each entered the lottery, but only one of us was able to secure a reservation. There is a re-drawing that happens a couple of weeks later and two of us were notified. The tour is 3,000 yen and is about 90 minutes in duration which includes a tasting of four whiskies plus mixing our own highball. From Tokyo, we took a two hour limited express train to Kobuchizawa Station and then caught the free shuttle to Hakushu Distillery.

The tour of the distillery was very informative and it was so interesting to see the process. The guide speaks in Japanese, but we were able to read the translations on our phones. The tasting itself was very fun and was neat to identify the notes of each whisky. Afterwards, guests of the tour are given the opportunity to purchase exclusive items in limited quantities. If you have the time, definitely recommend it!

We walked through the distillery.

Amazing to see the process.

Visit Tokyo: Make Custom Dashi at Dashi Okume Azabudai Hills

Located in Azabudai Hills, near TeamLab Borderless, is Dashi Okume - a shop in Tokyo that dates back to 1871 and is known for quality dashi and a curated selection of additive-free food products. The Azabudai location opened in March 2024 and offers custom made dashi packs with a selection of 36 varieties of dashi ingredients.

You can make reservations for the custom session online at tablecheck.com or walk-in. Our group of three were walk-ins and waited about 20 minutes. When it was our turn, the staff presented a large paper menu of ingredients divided into 4 groups and explained how to make our selections. We were able to smell each ingredient and if needed she would give us recommendations on what would be complementary with our chosen ingredients. Since we were bringing the dashi packs back to the Hawaii, we could not choose dried chicken.

The price is dependent on the ingredients you choose, but typically run about 3500-4000 yen for 210 grams of ingredients to make 30 dashi bags according to Okume's golden ratio. It took about 40 minutes for our orders to be processed so we had lunch nearby. I had more fun than I expected in this activity and I look forward to tasting my custom dashi!

Visit Japan: Konbini Hauls

We literally went to a konbini every single day during our recent trip to Japan.  Family Mart, 7-Eleven, Lawson . . . we would go for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert!  Sometimes we'd go even multiple times a day.

I'm always game for convenience store ice cream, and I usually get a sandwich and some kind of chips.

What are your must-haves from the konbini?

Haneda Airport Eats

Here's what we ate at the Haneda Airport terminal 2 prior to our flight back to HNL:

Katsu Curry Udon (Ginza Kiya)

I had the Katsu Curry Udon, and it was one of the best airport meals I've ever had!  The broth was soothing, the katsu crispy, yet juicy, and overall it was just a bowl of goodness!

Sweet Beef and Seasoned Egg Udon (Ginza Kiya)

Wagyu Donburi Sukiyaki Style (Hitoshishinaya)

Sushi (Matakoi-ya)

Such great airport food!

Visit Tokyo: Suginami Children's Traffic Park

Biking is a common form of transportation throughout Japan, so traffic parks / schools geared for kids exist to help them understand the laws and signs to traverse the busy roadways of Japan.

While in Tokyo, during a random day of exploring, we happened to be near one such park - Suginami Children's Traffic Park, so we decided to check it out.

At this park, there are foot pedal go-carts as well as bikes available to use free of charge (no helmets).  The go-carts are for little kids with parents / guardians, so my kids rode bikes.

There are working traffic signals which bikers and go-karters, as well as pedestrians, must obey (I admit that when I was walking through the park I sometimes forgot to pay attention to the walk / don't walk signs).

Advanced riders can bike through the adjacent Zempukuji River Green Children's Bike Path.

Many families would ride in with their own bikes or just play on the playground and check out the old steam locomotive.

The kids had fun riding through the park.

It was such a fun, spontaneous visit!

Visit Tokyo: Tokyo DisneySea

We did not have plans to go to Tokyo DisneySea on our recent trip to Japan, but the kids wanted to go, so I happily obliged, warning them we may not get onto many of the popular rides because we weren't about to wake up early and wait in line 3 hours before opening, as all the ride passes may be scooped up by the time we get in.

Which is what happened the last time.  We went to DisneySea 8 years ago and the lines were insane back then too, and we didn't get to ride many rides since most of the FastPasses were gone before we arrived (this was when they still had paper FastPasses).

On this visit, we got to DisneySea at around 9am, and the lines were still incredibly insane.

We unfortunately got stuck in a slow moving security line, as we saw many lines move faster than the one we were standing in, so our wait time was nearly an hour.

Once inside, I got Disney Premier Access (DPA) passes for Rapunzel's Lantern Festival via the Tokyo Disney Resort app, since I thought they would have a good chance of running out quickly, and the standby line was already over 120 minutes long.  DPAs are available for a fee, so it does add up, but to me it's worth it not having to stand in a 2+ hour line

The line for Rapunzel

I honestly did not think the ride was much to fuss over, but the scene with all the lanterns was pretty.

Throughout the day we were able to get DPAs for Journey to the Center of the Earth, Toy Story Mania!, Soaring: Fantastic Flight, and Peter Pan's Never Land Adventure.  DPAs for Anna and Elsa's Frozen Journey were all gone by midday, but read on to see how we managed to snag Frozen DPAs before we left DisneySea.

With the 40th Anniversary Priority Pass Experiences (free), we were able to ride Nemo & Friends SeaRider and Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull.

We also rode a few rides that had very minimal standby lines, such as Aquatopia, DisneySea Electric Railway, Big City Vehicles, Jasmine's Flying Carpet, Sinbad's Storybook Voyage, and Scuttles Scooters.

I didn't feel like we ate anything really noteworthy.  If I had to choose a favorite thing, it would be the Garlic-Scallop & Butter Popcorn - one of the items being offered throughout the park for the Food & Wine Festival.

Tiramisu Ice Cream Sandwich
Minnie Peach & Raspberry Ice Bar
Creme Brulee Churro
Demi-Glace Churro Potato

Sweet-Soy Sugar Churro
Chai-Spiced Sugar Churro

Garlic-Scallop & Butter Popcorn

We ate at a few sit-down restaurants:
Horizon Bay:
Chaliapin Meat Patty with Demi-Glace Sauce

Cheese Mont Blanc

Grilled Beef Steak with Shoyu-Grated Daikon Sauce

Baked Spicy Chicken
Canapes (Smoked Chicken Mousse, Cheese

Vichyssoise and Tomato Consomme Jelly

Special visitor while eating!

New York Deli:
Duffy Cookie Sandwich

Grilled Reuben

Dockside Diner:
Cheeseburger with Sausage
Fried Rice Chicken Bowl
While eating dinner at Dockside Diner, right before leaving the park, I refreshed the app and saw DPAs for Anna's and Elsa's Frozen Journey became available! So I immediately snatched them.
There was a night time show - Believe Sea of Dreams, that was a combination light / fireworks / projection show.  We caught only some of it since we were just getting off Anna and Elsa's Frozen Journey when the show started, but what we were able to see was really cool!
Believe Sea of Dreams

It was rainy pretty much all day, as well as quite humid, but I was happy that we got to ride a bunch of rides we didn't get to the last time we visited, even if it cost us a lot to ride them.
So - if you plan to go - be patient, be prepared for lines, and keep refreshing the app!
