Baldwin's Sweet Shop

I grew up going to Baldwin's Sweet Shop for shave ice.  On my recent visit, however, we got some local treats instead since we had already eaten dessert.

Baldwin's has all sorts of crack seed, gummies, senbei, Japanese candies, and more.

They have everything packaged in plastic containers vs displayed in jars or on hooks, so you'll have to open up or peer into each container to look at each offering.

It's a great spot to pick up some treats for yourself or for omiyage!

Visit Mexico: Mini Market Anita

When it comes to travel, I'm all about the snacks and omiyage.  While at La Bufadora market, I saw Mini Market Anita, which was full of Mexican snacks.

They had all sorts of cookies, chips, and more.

There were all sorts of flavors of familiar snack brands that were new-to-me.

Prices in this Mini Market were cheaper than the convenience store near the top of the market lane.

Definitely worth checking out if you love snacks as much as I do!

1-2 Buy Hawaii Snack Store in Pearl Kai Shopping Center

1-2 Buy Hawaii opened its second location earlier this year at the Pearl Kai Shopping
Center across from Queen’s Island Urgent Care. The shop specializes in its mass
selection of imported Asian snacks. The variety of snacks, candies, and drinks was very
impressive. The majority of the packaging is not in English so be sure to have your
google translate handy. I especially had fun looking through all the different flavors of
Lay’s chips.

Variety of chips

Different kinds of candies and gum.

This store is definitely worth the browse! They are open daily from 10am to 8:30pm.

Okonokai

I stopped at the Mililani Farmers Market for the first time in months, and was surprised to see Okonokai - it was the first day for the vendor!  I've seen posts come through my social media about the crackers made with limu, so I was excited to try them.

I was already familiar with the limu lepe-o-Hina used in the crackers, since we use the limu at Na‘au.

I bought all three flavors - Sea Salt, Spicy Gochujang, and Miso Cheezy.

My fave was the Sea Salt.  The crackers were thin with a nice snap, and just enough salt and umami.

I also bought some of the dried seaweed - perfect for soups or salads.

Follow Okonokai on IG to find out where to get them, or you can also purchase online!

Better-For-You Beef Sticks

Protein is important (I have been trying to eat more protein myself), and my kids enjoy snacking on beef sticks from time to time.  We've tried several brands and varieties over the past several months, and here are our faves:

Chomps Grass-Fed and Finished Beef Jerky Snack Sticks - Original

My kids love these Chomps.  I bought a box of 10 and they were all gone in just a few days.  I don't eat much beef myself, but I don't shy away from beef jerky / chips.

These beef jerky sticks have 10g protein per stick, are tasty, and perfect for on-the-go!  We can't wait to try other flavors!

Note: Also available at Costco!

Like Chomps, these beef sticks are made with grass-fed and -finished beef, and have no added nitrates or nitrates.

Country Archer Grass-Fed Beef Minis - Beef Taco
These were an initial Costco find.  They are mini sticks, so perfect for a snack or to tote along with lunch.  They contain no added nitrates or nitrates, and no artificial flavors.

My Go-To Afterschool Snack Recipes

School has been back in session for a while now for us, which meant I'm back to prepping afterschool snacks when I can.

Here is a roundup of a few of my go-tos, which I make weekly on a rotating basis.

Energy Bites can be made with whatever you have on hand.  I've made them in all sorts of varieties (S'mores, Nutella, cocoa, etc., and they are freezable too!

Chocolate Covered-Mandarins (with sea salt or crushed pistachios).

Smoothies are another treat that I make with whatever fruits I have on hand.  The topping possibilities are endless!

Better-for-You-Snacks

Disclosure: Links below are affiliate.

I have been on a quest to find better-for-you snacks, since I'm quite the snacker, and my kids are often craving a snack afterschool.

Although I do make a lot of smoothies and homemade treats, pre-packaged snacks can be very convenient, and below are ones we've tried that we love that are much better in terms of ingredients than their counterparts, which are full of additives, artificial colors, and other inflammatory ingredients.

Let me know if there are any others we should try!
CauliPuffs - Salt & Pepper

I loved these CauliPuffs so much!   It's hard for me to resist those cheesy puffed snacks, but I know even the more popular "natural" ones can be full of preservatives and additives.  These CauliPuffs are a tasty substitute-  crunchy, airy, with a great salt & pepper seasoning.

From the Ground Up - Cauliflower Stalks

The first time I tried the Sea Salt Cauiflower Stalks, I honestly wasn't expecting much, but I was blown away by the texture and taste.  I was addicted! Made from cassava and cauliflower, they are light and airy, but with just enough crunch and flavor to keep you wanting more.

Kibo Chickpea Chips

The Chickpea Chips are gluten free, have 6g of protein, and have a nice crunch!  They come in 3 flavors - Pico de Gallo, Sea Salt, Mediterranean Herb (the Sea Salt and Mediterranean Herb were my faves).

Hippeas

Hippeas are another snack made from chickpeas.  The puffs come in a variety of flavors (my fave is the Vegan White Cheddar), and have 4g of protein and 3g of fiber.  It's another tasty, healthy alternative to those cheesy puff snacks.

PeaTos

PeaTos was a pandemic find for me.  These pea-based snacks have a satisfying crunch, and I was pleasantly surprised with how tasty they were.  They offer various flavors and varieties, and my fave is the Crunchy Onion Rings, which taste very similar to the more well-known crunchy onion ring snack, but the PeaTos version is plant-based and is made with better-for-you ingredients.

Big Island Candies New Product Alert: Haupia-Flavored Confections

Thank you to our sponsor for the complimentary product!

I have become a huge fan of Big Island Candies products, now that I can get them on Oahu from their store in Ala Moana Center. When I was asked if I wanted to sample their upcoming product release, I did not hesitate at all!

Starting on March 22, 2024, you can find these haupia-inspired confections at Big Island Candies' stores on Oahu and on the Big Island, and on their website at bigislandcandies.com.

The Haupia White Dipped Macadamia Nut Shortbread features their signature macadamia nut shortbread, dipped in a creamy white coating made with pieces of coconut.

These cookies come in gift boxes of about 17 individually wrapped cookies, perfect for gift-giving or for snacking on in your home or office.

Each cookie is diagonally dipped by hand by Big Island Candies' employees at their Flagship Store and Factory in Hilo on the Big Island. If you have not ever been to their Flagship Store, you need to go! They have an open kitchen area, and if you're lucky, you'll get to see the hand-dipping in action! It's amazing how consistent they are with the hand-dipping.

The Haupia Macadamia Nut Bark consists of dry roasted macadamia nuts and crisp rice, held together by a white coating with coconut bits, giving it a subtle coconut flavor.

An 8.5 ounce bag includes approximately 5 pieces of bark.

I suggest pairing this with a cup of hot Kona coffee - the bark is rich!

Prices are as follows:

Ala Moana Store (1450 Ala Moana Blvd, near Center Court):

  • Haupia White Dipped Macadamia Nut Shortbread: $20
  • Haupia Macadamia Nut Bark: $16.50

Hilo Flagship Store and Online:

  • Haupia White Dipped Macadamia Nut Shortbread: $19
  • Haupia Macadamia Nut Bark: $15.50

This product release aligns with the Merrie Monarch Festival, one of the biggest events of the year in Hawaii. The event takes place in Hilo from March 31 to April 6, 2024

Big Island Candies Introduces Everything In It Except the Bagel Products!

Big Island Candies Everything in It Except the Bagel products

I love sweet and salty snacks so I was super excited to try Big Island Candies new Everything In It Except the Bagel savory products as part of a media preview. The first is a snack mix with your favorite crunchy snacks covered with a blend of savory seasonings: salt, garlic, onion, sesame seed, and more.  The second is a new macadamia nut shortbread blended with the savory seasoning called Macadamia Nut Shortbread with Everything In It Except the Bagel!

I thought I was going to like the snack mix more, but I really love the cookie! You just can't beat the texture and flavor of a Big Island Candies shortbread cookie and I really like the sweet salty taste of the Macadamia Nut Shortbread with Everything In It Except the Bagel!

These two new products would make a great gift for parties, pot lucks or just for snacking!  Also they are great to ship or bring on your travels as there are no worries of any chocolate melting.  Available on Oahu at the Ala Moana location.

Visit Hilo: Omiyage from The Locavore Store

It's not often that I get to shop for omiyage while on the Big Island, since I'm often so busy with work for Na`au.  However, on my most recent trip, I ended up at The Locavore Store (since we needed some ingredients for a private dinner), and I decided to get some omiyage.

I got some SHawaiian Grown Flavors Spicy Pineapple, Atebara's Ginger & Garlic Sweet Potato Chips, Maui Nui Venison Venison Bar, Pa`auilo Chocolate Killa Vanilla Bar, and Ahualoa Farms Dark Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nuts.

In addition to snacks, they have produce, ice cream, books, beauty products, and so much more!

What I also love about The Locavore Store is not only do they carry local produce and hand-crafted products, but they have the friendliest employees!  Every time I've been there or called, the employees are always so welcoming.

Whether you need groceries or gifts, stop by The Locavore Store!

Online shopping is available.

Off the Eaten Path

 Disclosure: Links are affiliate.

I'm on a quest to try "healthier" snacks, and I recently tried Off the Eaten Path's snacks, and now I'm hooked!

Although these snacks aren't new to the market, they are new-to-me, and I just cannot resist the crunch and flavors.

Veggie Crisps

I first tried them from Sam's Club, then I bought a variety pack from Amazon.  They are so good, even my kids have been eating them up!

Hummus Crisps

Since I love Cheetos, my favorite would have to be the Veggie Puffs.

Veggie Puffs

They are really tasty, and I love the White Cheddar flavor.

The products are made with ingredients such as chickpea flour and rice flour, and real veggies, such as peas, sweet potatoes, and beans.

Kauai Sweet Shoppe

While searching for Made-in-Hawaii treats for omiyage to send to a colleague, I stumbled upon Kauai Sweet Shoppe.  They specialize in small, handcrafted batches of caramels, and offer other sweet goodies.

The Dark Chocolate Macadamia Bark is perfect for when you have that chocolate craving.  I savor a piece of this rich, creamy treat to satisfy my sweet tooth!  The macadamia nuts and sea salt balance out the textures and flavors of this snack.  A little goes a long way!

The Caramel Brownie Cookie Cake made for a great dessert - chocolatey with bits of caramel throughout.

It would pair perfectly with vanilla bean ice cream!

Easy Snack: Peanut Butter-Stuffed Medjool Dates

Months ago I bought a container of Medjool Dates to make a dessert.  I have yet to make the dessert, but I did make an easy snack over the weekend - one that I've come across many times on social media - Peanut Butter-Stuffed Medjool Dates.

Simply take Medjool dates, slice them open and take out the pits, then stuff them with peanut butter (I placed peanut butter in a plastic bag, snipped the end, and squeezed out the PB into the dates - it was much easier than trying to spoon the peanut butter in).

Eat them as is, or top them with whatever you have on hand.  I sprinkled some with shredded coconut, others with ground flaxseed, and some with Lion's Mane Cacao Mix.

The dates give a slightly caramel flavor to the snack, and when combined with peanut butter, they really do satisfy your sweet tooth (one is plenty!).

The kids loved them!

Next up - I hope to finally make that dessert!

Banana Pops

These Banana Pops are a cinch to make, and perfect for an afterschool / after-distance learning snack!

Simply cut a banana in half, stick a lollipop stick in the bottom, dip in chocolate (I used a mixture of 1 T PB + 1 cup chocolate melted on high for 90 seconds in the microwave for a nice pb / chocolate mixture), and top with granola (I used yukonola).

Freeze for at least an hour, and enjoy!
