Clinical-Grade Facial with Modern Aesthetics Hawaii

Disclosure: complimentary treatment was received. All opinions are honest and entirely my own.

Immediately after my facial!

I used to consider facials as a frill; a once in a while treat yourself kind of thing.  But after one clinical-grade facial with Master Clinical Aesthetician, Paula Hu, I now realize it is a necessity if your goal is beautiful skin.  Paula has over 14 years of experience in skincare and in June opened Modern Aesthetics Hawaii where she blends clinical treatments with that spa feel.  I was amazed by my results just after one treatment and am definitely headed back for more in the recommended 4-6 weeks!
Each of Paula’s treatments are 90 minutes and begin with a thorough skin consultation.  My latest concern were these tiny white bumps on my face which she diagnosed as milia.  She informed me they could be removed, but could cause some bruising.  She added they sometimes reach the surface on their own.  I appreciated her sharing this knowledge with me and decided not to extract them at the time since my skin needed to be glowing for the weekend.
After a deep cleansing of my skin, she took a closer look and decided on a very gentle but effective chemical peel.  She also let me experience an amazing SilkTox mask that is full of antioxidants to tighten and brighten the skin.  She finished off my facial with an O2 Blast treatment that infuses hydrating serums with refreshing oxygen into the skin.  My face was seriously glowing when she was done working her magic.  There was zero downtime.
Whether your concern is acne or pigmentation, Paula has an array of treatments specifically designed to address your skin concerns.  I look forward to trying her Smooth + Lit facial next.  It’s designed to repair and restore the skin while diminishing fine lines and wrinkles.  It’s simple to book an appointment online through her Instagram account @modern_aesthetics_hawaii_llc  If you hurry, you may be able to take advantage of her Halloween promotion!
Best of all, Paula is amazing herself.  She’s professional, genuine, and gives off the good kind of energy.  She really cares about you and your skin and that’s the kind of person that I will put my trust in.

Pour Moi - the First Climate-Smart Skincare Line

Disclosure:  Complimentary products were received for review purposes.  All opinions are entirely my own.

I was a contestant in the Miss Chinatown USA pageant many (many) years ago when I met Miss Chinatown Chicago who had the most amazing skin.  She was a loyal user of La Mer and as soon as I touched down in Honolulu, I purchased a pot of that pricey face cream in hopes it would give me the same dewy skin.  That was my first lesson in learning how to care for my skin in accordance with my environment.  The rich (in more ways than one) cream worked great on her skin in Chicago’s cold winters, but was just too much for my combination skin in tropical Hawaii.

Recalling this, I jumped at the chance to sample a skincare line called Pour Moi - the first climate-smart skincare line specifically developed to address the humidity and temperatures where you live.  Pour Moi says when the weather changes, so should your skincare.  But this doesn’t mean only between seasons, it includes when you travel to varying climates.  I love that I can use Pour Moi’s Tropical Day Cream daily at my home in Hawaii and use their Desert Day Cream on my annual trips to Las Vegas or the Polar Day Cream when I travel abroad in the winter.  They also offer a Temperate Day Cream for climates with mild temperatures and normal humidity.  The four Day Creams use CEBs (climate energized beautifiers) to help promote and retain moisture no matter your location around the world.

The creams are light and apply easily.  They have a light pleasant scent naturally and do not leave your skin feeling greasy.  I also love that the bottles twist to on and off positions with a cover that makes them easy to travel with.  The day creams retail for $35 a bottle on Pour Moi’s website and their entire skincare line is non-toxic, vegan, and manufactured in France because the water in France is one of the purest sources in the world.  So now, wherever my next destination may be, I will be set with one of Pour Moi day creams!

Under the bottle cap, it twists on and off to avoid spills when traveling.

The four Day Creams use CEBs (climate energized beautifiers) to help promote and retain moisture no matter your location around the world.

Laser Genesis at The Medical Spa of Hawaii

Last week I visited The Medical Spa of Hawaii in Haleiwa to get a Laser Genesis treatment. Laser Genesis is a noninvasive, restorative treatment designed to reduce fine lines, large pores, and splotchy redness.  It also improves the skin's texture and tone.  Laser Genesis treatment areas include the face, neck, and body.

For this treatment, I opted to have my face treated.  The treatment lasts about 20 minutes and felt like a very warm heat passing over my skin.  I was very comfortable during the treatment and happy that there was no pain.  After the treatment, my skin felt a little tight but there was no down time.

It wasn't until the next morning that I could really see the results.  My skin felt much smoother and the pores on my face were visibly smaller.  I loved how my skin's tone and texture improved!  I have already recommended this treatment to friends and I would definitely have the treatment again.

The Medical Spa of Hawaii states that the number of facial treatments depends on the goal, but usually a series of 4-6 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart is recommended.  Results are generally seen after just one treatment, but a series of treatments is required for optimal results.

The cost per treatment is $200 or $500 for a series of 3.  Take advantage of 20% off a treatment (excluding botox or dermal fillers) and a free product when you mention you read this post on Hawaii Mom Blog!  The offer is good until June 30, 2017.

Thank you to The Medical Spa of Hawaii for a complimentary treatment.  All gratuities were paid on my own.  All opinions are entirely my own.

My Results + 20% off The Medical Spa of Hawaii Promo

In a previous post, I wrote about my experience at The Medical Spa of Hawaii.  I had a small sun spot on my face treated with their excel hr laser.  The laser targets the melasma and breaks it up.  Immediately after, the area was sensitive and pink, but subsided that day.  By day 3 the area looks similar to coffee grounds, but is smooth.  On day 9, the area is much brighter.  Depending on your skin, more than one session may be necessary.

Although my results are more on the subtle side, I am very happy with them as my goal is to achieve better skin overall.  It's important to remember that ongoing sun exposure will likely create new spots so always remember to use SPF!

Our friends at The Medical Spa of Hawaii are generously offering Hawaii Mom Blog readers 20% off a treatment (excluding botox or dermal fillers) and a free product when they mention they read this post on Hawaii Mom Blog.  Offer is good until June 30, 2017

The Medical Spa of Hawaii

Disclosure:  Complimentary treatment was received for review purposes.  All opinions are entirely my own.

Treatment room

It's been a little over a year since I had some hyperpigmentation treated so I jumped at the offer from The Medical Spa of Hawaii to try out their excel HR laser on some returning sun spots on my face.

The Medical Spa of Hawaii is located in Haleiwa and open seven days a week making it super convenient.  The Medical Spa is co-owned by two registered nurses and they offer an extensive list of services such as facial rejuvenation and tightening, stretch mark reduction, botox, dermal fillers, as well as hair removal.

I arrived on a Sunday morning and was greeted by Tony who had me fill out some paperwork and chatted with me about the procedure.  The excel HR laser that he would be using is very versatile and capable of offering hair removal as well as treat vascular lesions, skin texture and tightening, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and much more.

Although the excel HR laser gives continuous cooling before, during, and after each laser pulse making the treatment as comfortable as possible, I was still glad that the procedure was quick because each pulse felt like a rubber band snap.  Seven pulses later, I was ready to get on with my day!  The treated area felt like sun burn, but went away as the day went on.

I look forward to sharing my results with you next week!  Stay tuned!

If you would like to learn more from The Medical Spa of Hawaii and other businesses, they will be a part of a Ladies Meet and Greet on February 26, 2017 from 1-3pm at the Adonai Salon, located in the unit in front of the spa.

Say Goodbye to Dark Spots with Honolulu MedSpa's AFT Treatment

I have always been aware of some hyperpigmentation on the left side of my face, but didn’t think it was that noticeable until the day I opted to wear a tinted moisturizer instead of my usual cc cream.  In the same day, both my Dad and husband asked me, “What happened to your face?!”  Men.  I brushed it off.
But now that I am making a commitment in taking better care of my skin I decided to look into getting my dark spots removed.  At Honolulu MedSpa, your esthetician will analyze your skin and come up with a customized treatment plan that will be most beneficial for your skincare needs.  My plan included having an Advanced Fluorescence Technology (AFT) treatment, commonly known as a photo facial, to help target sun spots and improve my skin’s texture.
I was in, but the two things I needed to know was if it would hurt and would there be downtime.  Luckily for me, the AFT from Alma Lasers™ (exclusive to Honolulu MedSpa) is the next generation of intense pulsed light.  It takes formerly unused short-wavelength light and uses a special filtering system to convert it into the usable spectrum, making the treatment safe and effective.  Before the treatment, a numbing cream was applied to my face and it made the treatment virtually painless.  The treatment with the laser lasts approximately 20 minutes.   AFT treatments precisely target the red and browns in the skin that is commonly associated with freckles, sun spots, and rosacea while gently preserving surrounding tissue.
During the process, the esthetican was surprised how much pigment was appearing out of my skin and stated that I would benefit from a second treatment.  At this point I was a little nervous about going back to work because there could be some redness in the treated areas and generally the pigmented imperfections look worse after AFT before they look better.  You can expect within 24 hours after the treatment, temporary darkening of the pigmented areas that usually sloughs off after 7-10 days.  The amount of darkening varies per patient per treatment.  For best result, Honolulu MedSpa generally recommends a series of 3-6 treatments administered at 4 week intervals.
After the treatment was over, I looked in the mirror and was happy that it didn’t look as bad as I had expected.  I even went back to work.  Still, I should have given my husband a warning that evening because when he saw me, he got right in my face asking, “What happened to your face?!?!”
The collage below shows my progress over about 7-10 days with pictures I took with my iphone.  I apologize that the lighting isn't consistent, but I didn't touch up the photos in any way.  I am extremely happy with the results!  The dark spot has definitely lightened and lifted and I also feel my overall complexion is much more radiant.

Thank you to Honolulu MedSpa for the complimentary AFT treatment.  All gratuities were paid on my own.  All opinions are entirely my own.

Honolulu MedSpa's HydraJuve Age Prevention Facial Review + January Specials

Disclosure:  Complimentary facial received.  All opinions are my own.

I had my first HydraFacial, a medical grade facial, from Honolulu MedSpa back in mid-November.  Immediately afterwards, my skin looked hydrated and rejuvenated and felt amazing.  It was a wakeup call to see my skin’s potential.  For my next treatment, Nicole Bradford, Honolulu MedSpa’s lead medical aesthetician, recommended the HydraJuve Age Prevention Facial, which combines the anti-aging and preventative maintenance of a HydraFacial with advance laser technology.
To be honest, I wasn’t in a hurry to get another facial.  I’ve had facials in the past, but saw them more as an “extra” than a necessity.  But then the holidays (with way too much champagne) happened.  My beloved Clarisonic broke and my exfoliating took a hit.  All this combined with a 24-hour visit to Sin City and logging over 11 hours on an airplane left my skin looking pretty dull and dry.  I was ready for that HydraJuve facial.
The difference with the HydraJuve facial is the additional laser technology that gently heats the skin to stimulate new collagen production which works to firm the skin from the inside out.  The laser allows maximum absorption of the serum which will help the skin repair itself naturally.  I was told it would feel like being warmed by a camp fire and that's exactly how it felt.  You feel the heat, but it’s not uncomfortable at all.
The HydraJuve facial is the answer for anyone interested in preventative anti-aging treatments and increasing the effectiveness of their facial by adding non-invasive laser technology.  Just like the HydraFacial, the HydraJuve facial also has no downtime.  After the 90 minute treatment, I applied my makeup and returned to work feeling great thanks to the mini neck and shoulder massage included with the facial.
Right away, I noticed how much better my makeup looked on my skin.  It didn’t need to camouflage or cover, but instead it enhanced.  My skin was radiant and it showed.  This was a lesson learned for me.  Because my skin is turning 40 this year (I’m still in denial), anti-aging treatments will play a very important role in the care of my skin if my goal is to keep it looking its best.  And it is.

My view of facials has changed.  Benefiting from a medical grade facial, like the HydraJuve, first hand has proven to me they are a necessity if your goal is healthy skin.

Earth's Care Dry and Cracked Skin Balm Review

Disclosure: Complimentary product was received for review purposes.  All opinions are entirely my own.

Keeping the Earth's Care Dry and Cracked Skin Balm bedside.

Pedicures on a regular basis has helped my toes look their best, but over the years I've noticed the heels of my feet are getting more and more dry.  It looks awful and is pretty embarrassing, but actually is a common foot problem.  One of the causes is wearing shoes that expose the heels which are just the kind of sandals I wear and I don't plan on changing that.  Ever.  But recent ridicule from my daughter, who not only comically mixes the word callous with scallops but is pretty appalled by the whole sight, has led me to always be on the look out for a wonder cure for dry and cracked heels.

When Earth's Care, a company that uses only natural or naturally-derived ingredients, offered their health and beauty products for review, I knew I had to give their Dry and Cracked Skin Balm a try.  The balm has a waxy texture so you don't need a lot for application.  It has a clean, menthol scent.  I was pleased how quickly my skin absorbed the balm, but it was a little slippery when I put my sandals back on so I will just be using the balm on my feet before bed.

I didn't have immediate miracle results, but I feel with some exfoliation in combination with nightly dedicated use of the balm, my heels will be looking much better.  I have noticed my hands, especially my ring finger knuckle which gets chafed, have started to look less dry with the use of the balm.  So far, I like using the product.

Earth's Care offers a variety of therapeutic products with no artificial colors or fragrances, parabens, and harsh chemicals.

Honolulu MedSpa: HydraFacial Review + November Specials!

Where all the magic happens!  Table is heated and incredibly comfy!

We're halfway through November and I am already overwhelmed with the list of things I need to take care of before Christmas: shopping for a Christmas tree and presents, decorating, baking for friends and family, party planning, family Christmas cards, etc. The list is a mile long! Before I got too stressed out, I decided to carve out some time to take care of myself and my skin.

Between the kids, work, and holidays, skincare is usually last on my list. At night, motivated by sleep, I rush through my beauty routine and more often than not, my Clarisonic is untouched. It was a perfect time for me to visit Honolulu MedSpa (named #1 MedSpa in Hawaii by Modern Luxury!) for their HydraFacial Liquid Microdermabrasion, one of their medical grade facials.

Just the word microdermabrasion puts me on guard, but the HydraFacial Liquid Microdermabrasion promised to be serum-based and gentle. I was immediately at ease with Honolulu MedSpa's Lead Medical Aesthetician, Nicole Bradford, as she cleaned and analyzed my skin. The serum is applied with an applicator that feels like a gentle suction on the skin. I felt a little tingling on the second round. After extractions, a calming mask is applied to the skin and you are treated to a mini-massage.

My experience with the HydraFacial was wonderful and just as relaxing as facials at non-medical spas. I can attest that the facial leaves your skin feeling amazingly clean and soft. It was a wakeup call to see and feel my skin at its best! I also had no downtime and I could opt to wear makeup immediately afterwards.

If you are concerned with the treatment of a specific skin problem, whether it be hyper-pigmentation or preventative care, then a medical spa like Honolulu MedSpa would be your best option where the focus is on the patient's outcome, but with a spa experience.

Thank you to Honolulu MedSpa for the complimentary facial. All opinions are entirely my own. Gratuities were paid on my own.

The MedSpa also offers products for purchase.

Clean and relaxing waiting room.

The Latest in Skincare: Bio Peel Review

I admit once I turned 35, my concern with skincare went into overdrive and I pretty much upgraded all my products to an anti-aging version.  I upped my skincare regiment to using my Clarisonic daily and treating my skin to monthly facials.  I used toner, serums, and sunscreen.  I spent a small fortune on La Mer products.

Yet, I was in denial and stayed away from any treatment that contained the word chemical or peel which triggered images of a tomato-red afterglow.  No, thank you.  Besides, didn't you have to be - like 40, to need one of those?  Well, here I am, almost 40 and although monthly facials work wonders for some, I felt my skin needed something more medical-like rather than spa-like.

I jumped at the chance to attend a complimentary media session for Bio Peeling U.S.A and try a medical grade skin peel and product line.  2B Bio Beauty is an all-natural, 100% organic product line made in Europe that is gentle enough to use on all skin types.  It promised to diminish wrinkles and fine lines, large pores, hyper pigmentation, acne and scars with NO downtime.  I was sold.

Jennifer Rosenblum, owner of Bio Peeling U.S.A. located in California, is working on getting the secret out about this wonderful medical peel using 2B Bio Beauty's product line that is already popular in Europe.  But it seems the Japanese clients of Kazuko Iwase, 2B Bio Beauty's Hawaii exclusive distributor, are already in the know with mostly all of them flying from Japan for this unique peel.

I met both of these lovely ladies (with amazing skin) at Iwase's Honolulu office.  The office environment is nice and serene.  My treatment began with the cleansing of my skin with the most fabulous smelling products by 2B Bio Beauty.  Next came the 2B Bio Peel which is sealed for added longevity of product freshness and needs to be mixed and heated into a paste before applying.  I was warned of a kind of prickling pain that could be felt during and after the treatment and may last 1-2 days.  I noticed it, but it was not painful and it faded away within a couple of hours for me.  If it doesn't for you, it will fade away within 48 hours.

The next step is soothing the skin, followed by nourishing and moisturizing with a moisturizer and finishing up with a protecting sunscreen.  The entire treatment was about an hour.  There was no redness and I could apply make-up that day and return to work.  My skin immediately felt smoother and radiant.  I opted not to wear makeup for the rest of the afternoon and my co-worker remarked how nice my skin looked.  While most peels only work on the surface, Bio Peeling triggers the exfoliation process from within.  It is a medical strength skin care product that won't discolor skin or cause hyperpigmentation like traditional chemical peels can.

As each day passed, the results were more and more noticeable.  I have noticed an improvement in the texture and tone of my skin.  I love the results and would do it again in a heartbeat.  Although results can be seen in one treatment, it's recommended for the best results to have the treatment once every 2 weeks for two months with follow ups of two treatments per year.  Iwase offers two versions of the bio peel, one using 3 grams and the other 5 grams of the product.  She also offers special pricing when you purchase a series of 3 or 5 treatments.  For the cost comparable to a signature facial at a high end Waikiki hotel spa, I'd definitely prefer to spend my money on the bio peel because I know I will get amazing and lasting results.

I was also generously gifted with 2B Bio Beauty's Bio Defense BB Cream which I adore!  I love it even more than my Smashbox CC cream.  The texture of the product feels lighter and stays put.  I'm so grateful to have been introduced to this line of products.  I know I can't stop getting older, but I can do my best to slow down the wrinkles.  It may be vain of me, but let's be real - there's nothing wrong with looking your best.  Bring on 40!

Skindinavia The Makeup Primer Spray Review

I have pretty oily skin and usually by hour 3 of the work day, I am blotting my t-zone.  If I’m going out after work, I have to reapply my makeup.  I was pretty excited to try out Skindinavia’s Makeup Primer Spray that promises it will prevent makeup from melting, sliding or becoming cakey.  It claims that over 81% of consumer testers had a measurable reduction in oil and surface shine.
Skindinavia explains that its patented technology forms a lightweight, breathable web working with your makeup that slowly releases over 16 hours. The timed-release evaporation retains moisture longer while also drawing heat away from the skin as it slowly evaporates throughout the day. The results are fresh, cool makeup for up to 16 hours.
I tried the product for a week.  I applied as directed and was pleased that it didn’t feel sticky or heavy.  It’s a spray which means no messy fingers.  After applying, I put on my make up as usual.  During the course of the day, I noticed that my skin was less oily and that my makeup did stay fresh longer.
In fact, I decided to test out the primer spray on my trip to Disneyland.  Using the primer spray allowed me to be in the park all day and all night and not have to worry about my makeup.  There was even one night that I was sick and I did the unthinkable – I slept with my make up on.  It was pretty incredible that my makeup held up.  I’m very happy with the results of the primer spray.
While it’s a great addition to my skincare arsenal and has earned a space in my medicine cabinet, I would categorize it as a nicety instead of a necessity.
It’s great to know that Skindinavia’s spray is oil, paraben, and sulfate-free.  The primer spray retails for $35 for a 4 ounce size and they are currently running a promotion on their site.

I received the product free of charge for review purposes.
