Vons Chicken Opens in Town Center of Mililani

Half order crispy shoyu

The Town Center of Mililani just got yummier as Vons Chicken opened their newest location yesterday.  My family loves Korean chicken and their favorite is Vons.  We've tried many of the different flavors, but we always gravitate back to the Crispy Shoyu.

I love mochi so I also ordered the Fried Rice Cake (10 pieces) that comes mild or spicy.  I loved the spicy as the sauce is a little sweet.  I also wanted to try the Snow (cheese and onion powder) french fries, but unfortunately there was a mix up and I got the regular instead.  I look forward to trying them next time!

Also on the menu are boneless or bone-in chicken plates that come with 2 scoop rice, 2 pieces mini mandoo, and choice of sauce. Sounds like a perfect meal!

They are located by center stage, next to Tasty Korean BBQ and are open daily from 10:30am.

Visit San Diego - Bonchon Convoy

My daughter and husband are always down for Korean style chicken wings. Like always down. So it was no surprise that they found one near our hotel in San Diego. I am not as big of a fan, but once I saw bulgogi tacos on the menu, I was totally on board.

Based in New York City, Bonchon is a Korean style fried chicken franchise.  We even had one in Kapolei, but it has since closed.

We ordered the 20 piece chicken wings in the soy garlic sauce. You can also get them plain, spicy or half and half. The wings come with a complimentary side of either pickled radish or coleslaw. I got the 3 bulgogi korean tacos for myself that come topped with coleslaw, spicy mayo, and ranch. I opted for no ranch. We also ordered a side of kimchi. Even though it was really tasty, it made the room smell like kimchi the next day so we had to toss it.

The chicken wings were great as expected, but I really loved the bulgogi tacos. The next day I had them cold and they were just as delicious!  Online ordering is a cinch for takeout.

Korean Chicken Recipe

It's been a while since I made any sort of fried chicken recipe, and this recipe, which I found in a 20-year old cookbook, is a fave, and super easy!  I adapted it to what I had in the pantry, and it still turned out delish!

Korean Chicken

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 lbs chicken thighs, cut into 1" cubes
  • 1/4 c flour
  • 4 T sugar
  • 1 1/2 t salt
  • 5 t shoyu
  • 2 eggs
  • 10 stalks green onion,chopped
  • 1 T sesame seeds

  • Combine all ingredients, and marinate chicken for 8-12 hours.

Korean Chicken from Sugoi

My other employer, @adstreamz, recently had a lunch "meeting" at Sugoi, which is one of the company's clients.  Sugoi is known for its garlic chicken (Nat listed Sugoi in her top 10 Favorite Spots for Fried Chicken list), but on this visit I decided to go with the Korean Chicken, which I tried for the first time (and is a value item on Thursdays).

Korean Chicken with Fried Rice

Mac Salad
Dare I say it?

I like the Korean Chicken so much more than the Garlic Chicken!

The chicken was extra crispy on the outside, and tender and juicy on the inside, and the sauce was so tasty!  It had a little kick to it, which I liked.  I opted for Fried Rice and Mac Salad along with the Korean Chicken.  I thought the Fried Rice was good, and the Mac Salad was just okay.

I almost ordered the Hash Loco Moco - check out all of that gravy!  I think next time I want to try it!

Sugoi is also known for its bentos.

Lots of bento options!

I love that you can really customize your meal - whether it's the entree, the side, or the starch, and you can really indulge, or you can stick to healthier options, like brown rice, grilled garlic chicken, and tossed salad.

Portions are huge (the mac salad couldn't even fit on the plate, and it took two meals for my husband to finish the leftovers), so be sure to bring your appetite when you visit Sugoi!
