Sunday Brunch at Eating House 1849 by Roy Yamaguchi

Blackened Ahi Tartine

It was great news when Eating House had reopened for dinner this year, but even better news when they began their Sunday Brunch in April. I immediately made a reservation for an early Mother's Day celebration. Now that all the adults were vaccinated, my parents felt comfortable enough to eat at a restaurant. It would be our first time dining together outside our homes for over a year and
Eating House's al fresco dining room would make for the perfect setting for our party of 10.

The service at Eating House is excellent and I especially love how they take care of the kids.  Immediately upon being seated, we received bowls of edamame, our waters, and the kids were given crayons with the kids' menu to play with.  Before we even ordered, the kids were given their appetizers of veggies, fruit, and cheese quesadillas. Not having dined at the restaurant before, my parents were genuinely impressed. Our service was fantastic.  Our server was knowledgeable, answered every question we had, patient and friendly.

Sunday Brunch is from 10:30am to 2pm. Reservations can easily be made at Open Table or calling the restaurant at 808-924-1849.

Mad About Mad Bene

We drove 27 miles to try Mad Bene in Kapolei Commons, and we'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Mad Bene, brought to you by the owners of the popular nightspot Duck Butt in Kakaako, offers East Coast Italian fare in a spacious setting with reasonable prices.

Since Gem was traveling in the second half of December, I thought for sure I would get down here before she did, but as it turns out, she beat me to it! Click here to read about her experience.

First of all, make a reservation before you go. We arrived at 5:15 for our 5:30 pm reservation, and we overhead the front desk telling other people that the wait time for a table was over 1 1/2 hours.  Yikes! Although, I would say it's worth the wait, especially if you traveled across the island like how we did.  But really, just go to their website now and book your reservation.  And may I suggest gathering a group of friends to go with you so that you can order a bunch of dishes to share.  Final tip - tell your friends to be on time. They won't seat you until your ENTIRE party is present.

If you are interested in the kids menu, ask your server. They don't have print outs of the kids menu.  Our kids have simple tastes, so we ordered the spaghetti and cheese pizza for them. They gave two thumbs up for both!

The rest of us decided to order a bunch of dishes to share, because everything on the menu sounded delicious. Here's what we tried:

spaghetti and meatballs

pappardelle bolognese

N.Y.C.

fusilli pesto

crispy potato guy

Every dish was amazing!  If I had to choose my favorite dish for the evening, it would be the pappardelle bolognese. They executed this classic dish perfectly.  And in case you were wondering, they make their pastas in-house!

Visit Boston: Bliss Restaurant & Ice Cream Shop

Our first ice cream stop in Boston was at Bliss Restaurant & Ice Cream Shop.

This busy eatery serves local comfort food eats, and some of the best ice cream ever!

Battered Onion Rings

New England Clam Chowder
I opted for Clam Chowder and Onion Rings.  The Clam Chowder was good, and the Onion Rings were too, but unfortunately something happened with my order of Onion Rings, as I didn't get them until nearly everyone was done with their meals.
Bliss Special
The Bliss Special included Vermont cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and onion.
Tuna Melt
A kids menu is offered, including a side, a drink, and a sundae!
PB + Fluff

Mac & Cheese
I also learned that in New England, milkshakes are known as frappes!
Strawberry Frappe
The ice creams were so yummy!
Campfire S'mores

Extreme Chocolate

Salted Caramel Chocolate Pretzel
I had Salted Caramel Chocolate Pretzel.  It was the perfect combo of sweet and salty!

Despite how long it took for me to get the Onion Rings, I still thought Bliss was a great place to dine.

Visit Boston: Briggs Corner Pizzeria

We lucked out when we arrived at Briggs Corner Pizzeria.  We immediately got a table for seven on a very busy night.

House Salad

Seafood Stuffies
The Seafood Stuffies were quahogs filled with seafood stuffing.

Fish and Chips
The Fish and Chips included a single, gigantic piece of fish!  The Cole Slaw earned lots of compliments.

Chicken and Rice Soup

Texas Fries
The Texas Fries were loaded with bacon, cheese, and ranch dressing.
Kids Chicken Fingers and Fries

Kids Pasta Alfredo

Kids Cheeseburger with Fries
There is no dessert menu, but instead a display case of desserts which you have to go up to to see what's available.
Red Velvet Cake

Turtle Cheesecake

Tiramisu
We ordered the Turtle Cheesecake and Red Velvet Cake, and our server gave us the Tiramisu by mistake and just let us have it.

The Red Velvet Cake was really good, but I loved the Turtle Cheesecake.  It was creamy and rich!  I didn't try the Tiramisu since I'm not a fan.

Service was not the greatest, and I thought the food was just okay.  I did really enjoy the desserts, and if I were ever to go back, it would be to order take-out desserts.

Visit Boston: Bar Louie

While at Patriot Place, we decided to have lunch at Bar Louie.

Bourbon BBQ Burger
The Bourbon BBQ Burger was topped with housemade bourbon bbq sauce, cheddar, cream cheese, bacon, and onion strings.
Tortilla Soup
I was freezing, so I opted for Tortilla Soup for my lunch.  It was spicy and hearty, with chicken, avocado, and tortilla strips.
Loaded Tots.
I also got Loaded Tots, which were topped with queso, jalapenos, bacon, and green onions.  I think there should've been more queso and bacon, but the tots were nice and crispy.

A kids menu is available and includes a drink.
Kids Mac & Cheese

Kids Crispy Flatbread Cheese Pizza
Service was okay.  The kids pizza took an extremely long time to come out, and they were out of a lot of drinks on the board, but for the most part, the food was good.

Visit Boston: The Friendly Toast

Our first stop after arriving on the red-eye in Boston was breakfast at The Friendly Toast.

We were able to get immediately seated at this popular breakfast spot, but it didn't take long for there to be a wait for a table.

Chicken & Waffles
I had to get the Chicken & Waffles, a specialty at The Friendly Toast.  Waffle wedges were stuffed with fried chicken and bacon, drizzled with hot honey sauce and maple sour cream, sprinkled with scallions, and laid on a bed of mashed chipotle sweet potatoes.

It was delish!

I'm not much of a sweets person when it comes to breakfast, so I ended up eating mostly just the chicken and bacon.
Monte Cristo
The Monte Cristo was enormous!  Oatmeal French Toast sandwiched scrambled eggs, ham, and Swiss.
Chocolate Chip Pancakes

There is a Tiny Toast menu for kids, with everything just $5!

Kids Mac & Cheese
Kids Pancake with Bacon

Service was prompt and friendly, and The Friendly Toast was a great choice for breakfast!
