Visit Kauaʻi: The Musubi Truck

Prior to heading to the Lihue airport, we decided we wanted a quick lunch, so we ordered from The Musubi Truck. They specialize in musubis, but offer bentos as well.
Deep Fried OG
Their signature Deep Fried OG is a SPAM Musubi that panko-crusted and deep-friend, drizzled with kabayaki and aioli, and sprinkled with furikake.  Delish!

OG SPAM Musubi

Traditionalists can get an "OG" Musubi too - baked SPAM, furikake, and rice.

Lifeguard Bento

I thought the Lifeguard Bento options were interesting - tots, poke, and deep fried musubi.  I never had tots with poke or musubi before, but it worked!  I loved the tots (I chose Truffle tots) - they were nice and crispy!

Bento
A smaller Bento comes with rice, SPAM, kalbi, and miso chicken.

Miso Chicken Musubi
I got the Miso Chicken Musubi.  It was really tasty, and with kabayaki and aioli on the side.  It was a decent size and I could only eat half of it (one of my kids happily ate the other half).

Although the menu items are on the pricey side, the food was quality, delicious, and satisfying.  I was very happy we found The Musubi Truck before we left Kauaʻi!

Order online to avoid or minimize wait times.

Picnic tables and umbrellas are on site so you can eat; a misting system was in use at the time we went which is great for warm weather.

Visit Kauai: Sam's Ocean View Restaurant & Bar

On our last night in Kauai, we wanted to dine somewhere with a nice view, and Sam's Ocean View Restaurant fit the bill.

Complimentary Foccacia

Ahi Poke Nachos
Kids Grilled Cheese with Fries

Kids Pasta with Butter & Cheese and Focaccia

Salted Caramel Ice Cream

Mini Coconut Macaroons with Vanilla Ice Cream

I was actually not feeling well, so I didn't order anything for dinner (but I did sneak a few bites of my husband's order, as well as dessert!).

My husband ordered the Ahi Poke Nachos, which consisted of Won Ton Chips, Ahi, Green Onions, and a Sriracha & Wasabi Aioli.  I had a taste, and I loved it.  It was a nice twist on traditional nachos!

Kids meals range in price from $6 to $8, and are generously-sized.  We ended up with a lot of leftovers.

For dessert, we ordered Salted Caramel Ice Cream, as well as the Mini Coconut Macaroons with Vanilla Ice Cream.  The macaroons were so yummy with the ice cream!

I'm bummed that I didn't get to enjoy too much food, but the service and views were great, and everyone in my family enjoyed what they ordered.

Visit Kauai: Haole Girl Island Sweets

On the way back to Lihue Airport, we decided to stop by Haole Girl Island Sweets to pick up some airport munchies.

Haole Girl Island Sweets specializes in hand-made croissants stuffed with sweet or savory fillings, most of which are locally-sourced

Passion Fruit Swirl Cheesecake

I had a bite of each variety we ordered, and they were simply amazing!

The croissant was light and flaky, and the various fillings were delightful.

My favorite was the Havarti with Caramelized Mushrooms and Onions. The savory croissant was packed with so much flavor.

The Passion Fruit Swirl Cheesecake was my second-fave. The tart fruit and the sweet cheesecake filling was the perfect match.

The croissants we picked ranged in price from $5 to $6. Yes, a little pricey, but they are so worth it. A single croissant is quite filling!

Haole Girl Island Sweets also offers other types of treats, such as struedels, breads, and quiches, but if you visit, you definitely need to try a croissant.

Visit Kauai: Brick Oven Pizza

A few years ago our family went to Brick Oven Pizza in Kapolei and had a nice lunch, so I was eager to try the Kapaa location, since the restaurant originated in Kauai.

Hawaiian BBQ Chicken

Creamy Snickers Pizza
We decided to order takeout.

The Hawaiian BBQ Chicken was topped with Mozarella, Chicken, Pineapple, White Onion, and Green Onion.  The presentation seemed pretty sloppy compared to the one we ordered at Kapolei - the green onions were not thoroughly chopped - most were stuck together, and the toppings in general just seemed unbalanced.  Fortunately, it tasted good - I liked the tang of the homemade BBQ sauce.

We also decided to get a dessert pizza.  The Creamy Snickers Pizza was topped with marshmallow cream cheese, chocolate chips, nuts, and caramel.  My kids loved it, but I felt it needed more caramel.

Overall, the food was fine, and we spent less money at Brick Oven Pizza than if we had dined out at a restaurant.

Visit Kauai: Olympic Cafe

While strolling through Kapaa, one of my son's noticed people eating at Olympic Cafe, a restaurant on the second level of the Hee Fat Building, with seating overlooking the town, so we decided to eat breakfast there the next day.

Chocolate Chip Pancakes

Chorizo & Eggs

California Omelette
I decided to get the California Omelette.  It was stuffed with lots of bacon and cheese, and topped with avocado.  So good!  You can't go wrong with bacon!  And avocado!

Along with a side of home-fried potatoes, it was a huge breakfast - which one of my sons happily shared with me.

My husband enjoyed the Chorizo & Eggs, and the kids shared the Chocolate Chip Pancakes - each of them had a huge pancake which they devoured.

Our server was awesome.  He even made sure to warn us that the pancakes were huge and could be shared amongst my kids.

Olympic Cafe is a great spot for breakfast!

Visit Kauai: Kountry Style Kitchen

Last year I visited Kountry Style Kitchen in Ewa Beach, and during our recent trip to Kauai we visited the original location in Kapaa.

Cheesy Eggs

Keiki Chocolate Chip Pancake with Bacon

Keiki Macadamia Nut Pancake with Bacon
Keiki Strawberry Pancakes with Bacon

KSK's Garden Style Omelette

Each of my kids ordered the Keiki Special #2 - 1 kountry pancake, 2 bacon, and a drink, and they all upgraded to a flavored pancake (banana, macadamia, and strawberry).  The pancakes were enormous!

One of my son's really wanted an omelette as well, so I decided to share his choice of omelette with him - the KSK's Garden Style Omelette, which consisted of mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, and cheese.  Along with hash browns and toast, the meal was more than enough for me - I had plenty to share with my son!

My husband got the Cheesy Eggs - Grilled English Muffin topped with 2 Poached Eggs, Bacon, and smothered in a Cheese Sauce.  It sure was cheesy!

Service was good, and Kountry Style Kitchen was a great spot to fill up on a satisfying breakfast!

Kauai Shores Hotel - Beachfront Lodging on the Coconut Coast

Our family recently vacationed at the Kauai Shores Hotel (an Aqua Hotel), a beachfront property along Kauai's Royal Coconut Coast.

The recently-renovated hotel has 200 rooms, including 24 studios with kitchenettes, and boasts a variety of amenities included with the daily hospitality fee.

After a short drive from the Lihue Airport, we arrived at the lobby, where vibrant hues of greens, blues, and pops of oranges welcomed guests.

Valet and self-parking available
Loved the open, spacious lobby
After a warm and welcoming check-in, I was given directions to our 2-queen bedroom in the Lei building, one of four buildings on the property.  The room was adorned in colors just as bright and fresh as in the the lobby, and included a 42-inch TV, refrigerator, Keurig coffee maker, and Playstation 3 console.

Bright, fresh decor
2 queen beds

TV, desk, chair
The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable, and my kids often fought over who would sit in the cool blue / green chair.

Both an air conditioner and ceiling fan is in the room.  The air conditioning unit was quite loud, which initially made it hard to sleep at night, but we discovered that putting the a/c in Fan mode with the ceiling fan on kept the room cool without it being so noisy.

The bathroom was compact, and the vanity was especially small, but overall the room provided adequate space for our family of 5.

Microwaves are available in the Lei and Lani building foyers if you need to heat up any leftovers.

If you prefer a room with a bit more space, a larger bathroom, and a microwave, book a studio with kitchenette.

The lanai looked out to the lush, green lawns and foliage, as well as one of two pools.

Lush lawn
I was very impressed with the grounds of the property.  They were always kept clean, and I often saw employees tending to the plants and trees.

The property has four buildings, each with 2 floors, but no elevators, so if you have an issue with stairs, be sure to request a bottom floor.

Two-floor buildings
We were in a second floor room, which the front desk employee said tends to be quieter than ones on the first floor.

For the most part, the noise level throughout the hotel was minimal.  We could hear a few loud guests early in the morning or late at night, but for the most part, noise was muffled by the air conditioning unit whenever we were in our room.

Because of the two pools on property, the beach being just steps away, and several restaurants, shops, and attractions nearby, we were not in our room very often.

Larger pool

Smaller pool
There were plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas at each pool, and neither pool got very crowded during our stay - we never had a problem finding an empty chair.

The kids loved playing at the beach, which was literally just steps away.

Beach fun!
Being right on the beach meant gorgeous sunrise and sunset views!

At Kauai Shores, use of pool/beach towels is included with the daily hospitality fee.

Also included are complimentary Wi-Fi, outdoor yoga classes, and my kids' favorite amenity - the unlimited DVD and Playstation rentals.

Unlimited DVD and Playstation rentals!
On site is Lava Lava Beach Club, where we had a fabulous breakfast (you can read about it here), and there are numerous other restaurants just a short walk or drive away.

One of my favorite features of Kauai Shores is the wristband key.  You can wear it in the pool or at the beach, and you don't need look through your wallet or dig through your purse to find your hotel room key.  Simply wear the key on your wrist and wave it in front of the sensor on your door to get into your room.  Easy!

The wristband is so much more convenient to use than a card key!

Employees at the Kauai Shores Hotel were all so helpful and friendly.  I was greeted by name when I returned to the front desk with a question, housekeeping promptly provided us with extra necessities that we were short on, and maintenance did not give up when our ceiling fan needed to be reprogrammed.

The wonderful service, the numerous amenities, convenient location, and renovated rooms all contributed to a very pleasant stay at the Kauai Shores.
