Dinner at New Truffle Restaurant Margotto Hawaii

Presentation of truffles

Japan's Margotto e Baciare Group opened Margotto Hawaii in June.  The truffle centric French-Japanese restaurant has generated much buzz among Hawaii's foodies who want to experience the finest truffles from around the world.  To be honest, I wasn't confident I would love Margotto only because I am not big on truffles, but I am glad I tried because it was one of my favorite meals this year.

Our table of 4 had the signature degustation meal of 7-8 courses priced at $100 per person with the option of an additional caviar course and upgrading our pork course to the A5 Wagyu.  There is also the truffles supplement based on weight and market price.  The recommendation was 20 grams of truffle per person, approximately $75.  However, we decided to share one truffle for the table which was perfect for me.  For truffle fans, you probably should get your own.

I am not exaggerating when I say I loved everything because I did.  Each dish was delicious and I enjoyed the flavors which were kept simple so the truffle was enhanced.  My very favorite dishes were the Mushroom, Waimanalo TKG Egg, Pasta, and the Akitakomachi.

The experience at Margotto is very special and I highly recommend you to try it.  The restaurant has an amazing wine program and they are Hawaii's first Krug Ambassador.  They have also recently launched a series of special dinners with Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya called "Chuck's Supper Club."

Café Miró

I will begin this post by saying that Café Miró is now closed. So why am I writing about a restaurant that you can't go to?

For starters, before my last supper here, I had forgotten how GOOD the food was! I think it has been over 10 years since I last dined here, and I don't know how I could have neglected such a gem. The food and service were so amazing that I just had to write about it.

peach vichyssoise

Since it was the last time I would dine here, I ordered the four-course menu (there was a three-course also available) - peach vichyssoise, two appetizers, an entree, and dessert.

I forgot to take a picture of the homemade bread rolls that were addicting as heck. Who can resist fresh, hot dinner rolls, made in house?

And that's it folks. After 22 years of quietly serving some of the best French-inspired food on the island, Cafe Miro is no more.

But in this very spot, chef extraordinaire Chris Kajioka will open a new restaurant next February, and if it's anything like Restaurant Senia, we are in for a real treat!

Origin Hawaii

This tiny bake shop named Origin Hawaii has been on my radar since my friend posted their baked goods on Instagram a few months ago. I tried to go once on my way back from the Farm Fair last month, however they were closed by the time we got there.  But a few weeks ago one Saturday morning my sons and I were adventuring in the Heeia area, and I decided on the spur of the moment to take a drive out to Waikane to pick up some breakfast.

Yes, that is a shipping container, located on the corner of Kamehameha Highway and Haupoa Street in Waikane.

It is located on the grounds of Nona's Orchids on Kamehameha Highway (the owner's grandmother owns the Nursery). The first thing you see as you enter the bake shop is the display of plants, all available for purchase.

Next, you'll come across a small display of French-inspired pastries that are individually-bagged and ready to be enjoyed.

Scones .. cookies ...  almond cakes ... croissants ...

and next to the register is where I found the brioche au nutella  - I just had to try one.

I picked up three pastries total - the brioche, the chocolate croissant, and the raspberry/orange almond cake.

My sons immediately grabbed the almond cake and it was gone in less than 60 seconds.

They let me have just a tiny bite, and I regretted buying just one of these.

I saved the chocolate croissant and brioche for later - here's what they looked like.....

In case you were wondering, the pastries are baked up the street in a kitchen, not in the shipping container.

Can't wait to return in August to try their Tiramisu cookie, and maybe then I'll get more than one bite of their almond cake!
