Hali'a by Side Street Inn Now Open at Wai Kai!

Last week, I got to preview the menu at Hali'a by Side Street Inn located in Wai Kai in Ewa Beach. Hali'a is Hawaiian, meaning honor and remembrance of a loved one. In this case, the restaurant name is honoring the memory of Side Street Inn founder Colin Nishida who opened the original location in 1992 and passed away in 2018. Carrying on the legacy are owners and best friends, Cheryl DeAngelo and Lisa Meyer.

The location is beautiful with indoor, outdoor, and terrace seating. The service is also incredibly friendly and attentive. The menu has all of your favorite Side Street Inn classics plus a variety of poke and all new signature cocktails!

Spicy Ahi Poke

Chinese Chicken Salad

Signature Garlic Chicken

"The Works" Fried Rice

Sizzling Boneless Kalbi

Pan-fried Pork Chops

Mom's Sweet Bread Pudding

Signature Peanut Butter Crunch

New Cocktails

Hali'a now open!

Owners Cheryl DeAngelo and Lisa Meyer

The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 4pm to 10pm and Friday through Sunday from 4pm to 11pm. You can make reservations on their Yelp page.

Jolene's Ewa Beach

One of my favorite eateries in Ewa Beach is Jolene's
Buttah Shrimp Roll

Garlic Buttah Shrimp

Papa Smokes Burger
The Papa Smokes Burger includes 2 beef patties and smoked brisket.
BBQ Brisket Sandwich

Fried Chicken Salad

My go-to is the Fried Chicken Salad, in an effort to be semi-healthy.  A generous portion of tender, juicy fried chicken tops a bed of greens with onions and tomatoes.  This salad lasts me multiple meals!

Jolene's in Ewa Beach never disappoints!

Jolene's Ewa Beach

Since I was in the area, I decided to pick up some take-out from Jolene's Ewa Beach.

Fried Chicken Salad

I was trying to be semi-healthy, and ended up ordering the Fried Chicken Salad.  It's definitely something I'd re-order. Golden, fried buttermilk chicken strips topped a bed of lettuce, along with some tomatoes and house pickles.  I really enjoyed the acidic components in the salad, It was such a hearty meal!
Lobster Roll

Louisiana Melt
The Louisiana Melt consists of Cajun crawfish and Havarti, Muenster, and Cheddar Cheeses, stuffed in housemade Japanese Milk Bread.
BBQ Beef Brisket
You can add on a side to your melts or rolls, such as curly fries, waffle fries, tomato bisque, toss salad, or corn chowder.
Loco Moco

Jolene's offers a nice variety of foods to choose from - sandwiches, salads, and local dishes.

Everyone in the family enjoyed their meals, and Jolene's is deifinitely one of my fave spots in Ewa Beach!

Jolene’s Ewa Beach

After seeing numerous IG-drool-worthy photos online, I finally made it out to Jolene's.  I went to the Ewa Beach location, and ordered:
Lobster Melt
Buttah Lobster Roll

BBQ Pork Melt

Fried Chicken Cheese Melt

The Fried Chicken Cheese Melt was enormous.  I could only finish half.  The chicken was juicy, and the soft, grilled, Shokupan bread really held the sandwich together.

The Chowder Fries are topped with bacon, cheese, and cilantro, and for take-out orders, the chowder is served separately so you don't end up with soggy fries.  Unfortunately, the fries were undercooked.

Fortunately, I ordered a large Curly Fries, which were perfectly cooked and so delish!

There are so many other menu items I want to try!

Jolene’s Ewa Beach

I was excited to hear Jolene's, a family owned and operated business, opened a location in Ewa Beach.
They are known all over social media for their famous buttah lobster roll.

I opted instead for their Spicy KNFC   (Korean fried chicken) melt. Doesn’t that sound good? It was! I would definitely order that again…and again. They serve all their sandwich on house baked bread made daily. Yummm!

My friend and I shared the birria wontons which were also excellent. I usually don’t get a drink, but the peach lemon tea sounded really refreshing and I really enjoyed it. I would get it again too.

Take out seems popular at Jolene’s, but if you decide to dine in, there is socially distanced seating inside and outside of the restaurant available.

Located in Laulani Village, they are open daily from 10:00am - 7:45pm.

Teaspoon Serving Bingsu inside Spoon Korean Kitchen

The injeolmi has red bean and mochi.

Before school started, I took the kids for some bingsu (Korean shave ice) from Teaspoon, a Korean dessert shop inside Spoon Korean Kitchen located in Ewa Beach.

In addition to the bingsu, Teaspoon also offers their "Sparkling Ade" - sparkling water with a variety of homemade syrups and lattes made with only milk and no coffee.

The mango bingsu looked amazing, but we opted for the Injeolmi and Oreo bingsu.  The bingsu are $10.95 each, but the serving is huge. My daughter and I finished off the Injeolmi, but my son only ate half of the oreo.  The oreo was good, but not as refreshing as I would expect a fruit flavored shave ice.  Both shave ice were served with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

They are open from 11am to 8pm, Mondays thru Saturdays and closed on Sundays.

Rainbow Drive In - Ewa Beach

I was craving tater tots, and something with gravy, and also a slush float, so the one place that came to mind was Rainbow Drive In

We went to the new location in Ewa, where our order was ready and waiting for us after we called it in.

We ordered the staples - gravy fries, chili tots, chili, loco moco, boneless chicken with gravy all over, mixed plate, plain tots, and slush floats.

Everything was good - and of course the tots would've been better eaten immediately, but all of those comfort foods totally hit the spot.

I'm glad there are more Rainbow Drive In spots around the island!

Kountry style Kitchen - Ewa Beach

I recently met @darayoung for breakfast at Kountry style Kitchen in Ewa Beach (she had a tee time later that morning at a nearby golf course, so that's why we met on that side of the island).

Side Order Bacon

Bacon Cheddar Waffle

Idaho Omelette
I ordered the same thing as my first visit - the Idaho Omelette. It was filled with my faves - sour cream, bacon, potatoes, and onions.

Dara ordered the Bacon Cheddar Waffle.  She loved the sweet and savory combo.  Even though there was bacon in the waffle, I convinced her to order a side of bacon!

Kountry style Kitchen is a great breakfast spot in the Ewa Beach area!

Applebee's in Ewa Beach

I've been to Applebee's a couple of times - the most recent being three years ago in Washington.  On both of our visits, the family-friendly chain offered great food and service, therefore I was excited to find out they'd be opening in Hawaii.

After the first location opened up in Ewa Beach, I heard and read mostly negative things, so I was not planning on going for months.  However, my husband suggested we try it.  He figured if we get there as soon as it opened, the chances of something going wrong would be low.

So we took a chance.

We arrived at 11:05am, 5 minutes after the restaurant opened, and we were immediately greeted by very friendly staff members.  We were seated right away, and a few minutes later our server came by.  She was also very friendly, but one of the first things she told us was "Let me tell you what we don't have today," and I knew that was a red flag.

She mentioned several items not available (e.g. Triple Bacon Burger, Spinach & Artichoke Dip), and shortly thereafter took our orders.

While waiting for our food, I noticed our server repeatedly going to other tables apologizing for the long wait, so I anticipated a lengthy wait as well.

Twenty-one minutes after ordering (this is another great reason to take photos of food at restaurants - the timestamp!), the kids meals arrived, which wasn't so bad in terms of time to wait.

KRAFT Macaroni & Cheese with French Fries

Corn Dog

Mozzarella Sticks

Fried Shrimp
Kids meals are just $5.49, or $1 extra for slightly bigger meals (Hungry vs Super Hungry). Each meal comes with a side and drink (free refills).

The manager came by and said she wanted to make sure the kids got their food first (which I was appreciative of), but she also had to deliver some bad news to my husband - the burger he ordered, The Blazin' Texan, was one of the menu items not available that day, but he could order the Triple Bacon Burger, which they did have (an item we were originally told was not available). So he ordered the Bacon Burger instead. The manager apologized for the confusion, and offered us a complimentary dessert!

Finally, after 45 minutes from the time we ordered, the grownups' meals arrived! Since the kids were done eating a while ago, the manager offered to bring some complimentary Chips & Salsa for the kids to munch on while the adults finally got to eat lunch.

Chips & Salsa
Crispy Brewhouse Chicken
Triple Bacon Burger

I ordered the Crispy Brewhouse Chicken, which was very delicious.  I was ravenous, and I almost ate the entire dish!  The crispy, juicy piece of chicken went well with the mashed potatoes, crispy onions, and stout gravy.  Talk about comfort food!

The Triple Bacon Burger has bacon in the burger, on the burger, and a BBQ bacon ranch sauce on top. It was a lot smaller than I had expected it to be, but my husband liked it.

For our complimentary dessert, we opted for the Triple Chocolate Meltdown.
Triple Chocolate Meltdown
The Triple Chocolate Meltdown - a fudge-filled chocolate cake drizzled with hot fudge and served with vanilla ice cream, was good, but the entire dining experience already had me upset.

And our server, who started out as super friendly and attentive, was still pleasant by the time we left, but she was rarely seen once the kids got their meals.

The staff is very nice, the food is really good, and I appreciate that the manager didn't hesitate to offer us a complimentary dessert and snack for the kids, but there are still numerous issues that still have to be resolved (we even had an error on our bill that needed to get fixed!), before I dine there again.
