K's Bento-Ya

I haven't had a bento from K's in decades!  They have some a la carte items, but many people simply go to buy bentos.  They have two sizes - Small and Large.

In the Small Bento is:
  • Fried Cayenne Chicken
  • Shoyu Hot Dog
  • Tofu Patty
  • Musubi
  • Maki Sushi
  • Oshi Sushi

I remember when the bentos were just $5-$7, and although prices are now double that, I think it's still a great deal for what you get, considering today's ingredient costs.

It's the perfect beach / picnic / sporting game / don't feel like cooking today meal!

Bento at Higoto Japanese Eatery

Tonkatsu Bento

We have been wanting to check out the bento from Higoto Japanese Eatery for a long
time! We were scared away by the visible line from the parking lot twice, but you know,
the third time’s the charm. But really, we just waited in line. The small shop allows three
customers in at a time so be patient because the food is worth the wait. Besides bento,
they offer musubi, rolls, cup sushi, salads, inari sushi, and desserts by Malu Honolulu.

We had the tonkatsu bento, nori bento, and shoyu garlic salmon bento. They were
delicious! The food portions are generous and I enjoyed all the sides they included. I will
definitely be back.

Shoyu Garlic Salmon Bento

Nori Ben

Located on Waialae in Kaimuki, Higoto is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am
to 4pm. You can also preorder your bento, but for same day order the earliest time for
pick up is 11:30am.

Bento from Kokoro-Tei

Nori Salmon Bento

I've never been to Kokoro-Tei, but I've enjoyed their bento on several occasions. Kokoro-Tei first opened their doors in Waikiki in 2009, but have since moved to their current Mo’ili’ili location in 2010. The menu is extensive and you can be sure your bento is made to order with premium ingredients.

In addition to nori bento and regular bento, they offer curry bowls, daily specials, and mega bento with two choices. Kokoro-Tei is a great option next time you need to feed a large group and you make your order conveniently online. They are open Monday through Friday from 10am to 2:30pm and 4pm to 6pm. On Saturdays, they are open 10am to 2pm. Parking is available in the lot next to Teddy's Bigger Burgers.

Banzai Bento

One of my kids had a week-long camp in which we had to provide daily lunch, so one day I decided to get bentos from Banzai Bento for him and for the rest of the fam.
Hibachi Chicken Lunch Bento

The Lunch Bento comes with your choice of entree, plus furikake rice, hot dog, edamame, and fried mandoo.

Hibachi Chicken and Garlic Chicken Deluxe Bento

The Deluxe Bento comes with two choices.

Banzai Pack
The Banzai Pack had garlic chicken, beef bulgogi, fish tempura, SPAM, fried mandoo, furikake rice, and takuan.

Bombucha Fry Saimin Bento

I had the Bombucha Fry Saimin Bento, which included garlic chicken, fried saimin, beef bulgogi, fried mandoo, and hot dog.  I really liked the garlic chicken, and thought the fried saimin was tasty, but a little on the dry side.

I thought the quality of the food was overall good and the portion sizes and prices were reasonable in comparison to similar spots (the bentos we got ranged in price from $11-$16).

Banzai Bento also offers breakfast bentos!

I think it's a great spot to pick up bentos for any occasion!

Tenkatori Revisited

Tenkatori is easily one of my new favorite eateries in Hilo.  I recently ordered take-out again, and now they have a phone number listed on their social media so you can call in your order and minimize your wait time.

Don't mind the umeboshi that rolled off the rice

I ordered the Karaage Bento again.  Their specialty is the chicken karaage, so you must get the chicken.  The chicken didn't have as strong of a ginger taste as last time, so I thought it tasted even better than the first time.  The chicken was cooked perfectly again, and even the Japanese rice was perfect again (seriously some of the best rice I've ever had).

When I called, they said it would take about 7 minutes, and by the time I got to pick up the food, it was waiting for me.

They make the karaage fresh to order, so you may have a bit of a wait if you don't call ahead.

Visit Kaua`i: The Fish Express

I first heard of The Fish Express on Kaua`i when a friend told me years ago that her family owns the shop.  That family has since sold it, but I finally had a chance to visit on my recent trip to Kaua`i, as we picked up food on the way back to the airport.

The Fish Express offers a variety of poke bowl options - simply pick your rice (or greens) base, your choice of poke and how many scoops, and then you can add toppings (priced per pound).

The combinations are endless!

They also offer items from "Da Grill," such as fish plate lunches or Hawaiian plates, and they even have a Kids and Senior Menu!

Fried Chicken & Shrimp Bento

Grilled Cheese & Fries
Both the Fried Chicken & Shrimp Bento and the Grilled Cheese & Fries were from the Kids Menu, and my kids said the food was "bussin."

The Fish Express also offers other grab-and-go bento options and locally-made snacks.

Note - parking can be very tricky in their lot!

Leeward Drive-Inn

I was craving fried noodles, and the place that usually pops into mind whenever I think of fried noodles is Leeward Drive-Inn!
School Lunch
I opted for the School Lunch, which consists of Fried Chicken, Hot Dog, Rice, Portuguese Sausage, and (of course) Fried Noodles.  The Fried Chicken was enormous, and the serving of Fried Noodles was very generous.   The School Lunch lasted me three meals!
French Toast

Leeward Omelet
You can choose up to 3 ingredients for the Leeward Omelet.

Mean Jun & BBQ Chicken Mixed Plate

Buttermilk Hotcakes

Prices are reasonable, and the food, especially the Fried Noodles, is always good whenever I order from Leeward Drive-Inn.

Visit Hilo: 5-Spice

I've passed by 5-Spice in Hilo many times, and I've always known it to be a crack seed store.  I had no idea they served food too!

Pastrami Sandwich

Katsu Moco

5-Spice Bento
Gravy Burger

Chicken Katsu Curry

I was pleasantly surprised with just how tasty everything was.  The Chicken Katsu was nicely seasoned and cooked, and my friend enjoyed the Gravy Burger and Pastrami Sandwich.

The bento came with BBQ Chicken, BBQ Meat, Kimchi Patty, SPAM, Hot Dog, Hash, Zucchini, Egg, and Koko (I never heard of Koko until I got this bento!).

Prices are very reasonable, and I'd definitely order from 5-Spice again!

Oh My Grill - Pearl City

A friend of mine told me about Oh My Grill in Pearl City, which has one of the best Chicken Katsu deals in town, and I finally got to try it out.

For just $6.99, you get a regular plate heaping with Chicken Katsu (plus rice and mac salad), and a medium drink.

The Oh My Pac is a deal as well - just $9.50 for Mochiko Chicken, Teriyaki Beef, and Fried Shrimp.

Although I've had better katsu elsewhere, it was still tasty, and can't beat the value.

The mochiko was really good as well.

Such a great deal on food!

Special Take-Out Bentos at Restaurant Kuni

Restaurant Kuni is a Waipahu mainstay, and one of my favorite places for Chicken Katsu. They are currently running a Special Take-Out Bento menu that's a really great deal - $7.95 for 1 choice, or $9.95 for 2 choices!

Chicken Katsu + Miso Butterfish (+$2)

Chicken Katsu + Grilled Salmon

Tofu Steak + Shrimp Tempura

Chicken Katsu + Chicken Teri

My go-to at Kuni is the two-choice teishoku of Chicken Katsu + Chicken Teri, so I love that I can get an almost identical meal for take-out.  Other choices, in addition to the above, include Pork Teri, Fried Akule, Shoyu Pork, and Beef Teri.

The bentos come with potato tempura, namasu, and furikake rice with ume.

The portions are generous, and it's such a great deal!
