Visit Hilo: Kula Shave Ice

When my friends and I were planning our 24-hour trip to Hilo, one of my friends put Kula Shave Ice on our itinerary. I didn't say anything, but in my mind I was thinking "why is Kula Shave Ice on our itinerary? We are going to the Big Island, not Maui!"  You see, Kula is a district in Upcountry Maui, and I erroneously assumed that Kula Shave Ice was located in Maui, but in fact, it's in Hilo! The owners named their shave ice business after their name - kula translates to "golden", which is the last name of the owners Tiffany and Luke.

Honestly, I wasn't that excited to come here at first, because I'm not a big fan of shave ice (please don't hate on me for saying that!). But, after sharing a bowl of shave ice from Kula Shave Ice, I am now a FAN of Kula Shave Ice!

The ice is super fine and just melts once it hits your tongue - no crunchy ice served here.

The syrups are made with organic, locally sourced fruit, cane sugar, and filtered water - so much more healthier and tastier than artificial syrups.  The homemade haupia cream (coconut whipped cream) is a must-try! It comes automatically with the Lava Flow pictured above.

Even if you prefer your shave ice without toppings, you should consider adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I don't know which brand they use, but it's high quality, creamy and rich ice cream.

They also sell organic acai bowls, cold brew coffee, and other thirst quenchers.

Not heading to Hilo any time soon? They have a second location in Kahuku on Oahu! I'm definitely heading here with my sons soon!

The Hilo location is open 7 days a week - 9 am to 5 pm!
