In preparation for our first family trip to Japan, I researched a couple of money exchange businesses. The word is, the most popular place among locals is Pacific Money Exchange. Located in Waikiki, the exchange gives one of the best rates and waives fees for Hawaii residents.
I thought I could just stop by when convenient and get my money exchanged. Not so. Due to the yen being in high demand (currently USD/JPY 112), when I called their appointments were a week out. Panicked, I called d'R Exchange. They also were sold out, but would call me when the yen was available. Fortunately, she called me back the same day.
When I went to their location on Royal Hawaiian Ave. in Waikiki, I totally missed it. Retracing my steps, I found a small window in the wall next to a t-shirt store. The transaction was seamless. Note that if you require to exchange more than $1,000, you'll need to bring your passport. d'R Exchange also didn't charge any additional fees.
There's no parking so be sure to have someone drive you or make it a day by parking at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center or International Market Place and then walk over. Both centers will validate with a purchase.
