Lucky Box

Lucky Box recently opened in the Waiakamilo area (Waiakamilo Shopping Center), and after seeing it featured on Cheap Eats, I asked the husband to pick up a couple of plates to-go for dinner.

This restaurant offers both local style plates as well as Chinese favorites. It was hard to decide which style of chicken to try - mochiko, garlic, or katsu? I decided on the katsu, to see if the boys would prefer it over our usual spot (L&R).

The regular size comes with a decent portion of chicken - just about the same amount as other places.

We also tried the shrimp with broccoli cake noodle. The shrimp and broccoli came with the gravy in a separate container from the noodles, in order to keep the cake noodles nice and crispy. I couldn't believe how much gravy came with my order.

I don't like my noodles swimming in gravy, so I had a lot of gravy leftover after enjoying my noodles. I ended up using the leftover gravy to make Chinese style eggplant and it worked out pretty well!

But back to this dish, it definitely satisfied my craving for cake noodles!

They have an extensive catering menu (three sizes) and also party packs. I will definitely be back to try the mochiko chicken, garlic chicken, and smoothies!

Open daily: 7 am - 11 pm.

Pancakes & Waffles - Kalihi

A friend treated us to breakfast at Pancakes & Waffles in Kalihi. What I like about this restaurant is that you can place your order online, and enjoy your food in the restaurant. You can also order at the restaurant, but you'll need to wait in line to place your order (during peak times), then wait for your order.

I was only able to get photos of half of what we ordered (due to a table of very hungry kids!), but here's what I did manage to capture:

2-piece cornbread waffles

Loco  Moco

Honey-butter chicken and waffles

I was most impressed by the honey-butter chicken and waffles - it came with three large, crispy pieces of fried chicken. This dish can easily be shared among two people.  My friend ordered the loco moco and she barely made a dent in it. The next time I dine here, we will do it family style for sure!

Click here for more information or to place your order online - be sure you're placing your order for the correct location (they have another location in Waimalu).

Soul Chicken

Our fried-chicken-loving family checked out Soul Chicken, one of three new KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) restaurants to join Oahu's dining scene recently.

Soul Chicken is located right on Dillingham Blvd., in the same parking lot as Monarch Lounge (which houses another fried chicken business), Hana Tea, and Yohei Sushi. The  menu consists primarily of crispy fried chicken sold as chicken wings or boneless chicken, flavored or plain fried. There are five different flavors to choose from - shoyu, honey, wasabi mayo, yang nyeom (sweet & spicy), and Hell's Gate (SPICY).  They also offer a crispy chicken sandwich (regular or spicy), and a host of sides including corn & mac salad, french fries, mandoo, and gimmari (deep fried glass noodles in seaweed).

Since everything is made to order, I checked the menu on Yelp ahead of time and called in our order on the way to Kalihi, so that we wouldn't have to wait for our order in the hot sun. When we arrived fifteen minutes later, our order was waiting for us.

We tried the gimmari, honey chicken wings, sweet & spicy chicken wings (mild), and the plain fried boneless chicken (for the kids).   The boneless chicken reminded me a lot of Raising Canes chicken strips - it was very moist and not too heavy on the batter.  The chicken wings were amazing! I loved the thickness of the batter and the taste of the sauces.  The chicken was very moist and very plump. The honey was my favorite of the two sauces - as it was a bit lighter than the sweet & spicy, and I have a preference for lighter sauces.  The hubby liked the sweet & spicy more than the honey.  The Gimmari was okay, but it didn't stand out, and I would not order it again. Maybe I will try the french fries next time, or I may just skip the sides altogether and order just the wings!

A word on the "Hell's Gate" flavor - on the menu it says "No Refunds, No Law Sue", which suggests that this flavor is a 10+ on the spiciness scale.  If you try it, let us know how spicy it is!
