Visit Utah: Great Salt Lake State Park

We couldn't visit Salt Lake City without visiting Great Salt Lake State Park.  

The Great Salt Lake is what is leftover of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric lake which spanned 20,000 miles!  

The Great Salt Lake was just stunning, especially with the mountains in the background.  

The high salinity of the lake means there are no fish, but there is algae and brine shrimp.  We couldn't see any of the shrimp, or sea monkeys as they are called, but there are displays in the visitor center where you can see them.  

There is a "rotten egg" smell due to the oolitic sand, a green sand which is a mixture of bird poop, dead shrimp, and dead shrimp egg casings.  

There is not much to do at Great Salt Lake State Park (there is an admission fee per vehicle), but there are picnic areas, and you can camp.  It was still a nice place to visit for some leisurely walks!

Visit Salt Lake City: Wingers Restaurant & Alehouse

Wingers Restaurant & Alehouse is a Utah based chain that we stumbled upon.  Although the restaurant only had a few tables occupied, we had to wait to be seated because they were short-staffed.

My son who loves rice did not care for the rice in this bowl (of course it wasn't the kind of rice we have back home), but he loved the chicken.  

BLT Chicken Wrap

I shared the BLT Chicken Wrap with one of my kids.  It was enormous!  The staff had the plates already split up for us, and I couldn't even finish my share!  The wrap included Sticky Fingers (hand breaded boneless chicken fingers in their signature sauce), bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and ranch in a chipotle tortilla.  

Despite being short-staffed, the service was still great, and the food was too!  Highly recommend for a family-friendly meal!

Mexican food is my favorite type of cuisine, so when I heard a new Mexican restaurant, Ono Loco Tacos, opened up in Salt Lake (near KMart), I went as soon as I could.

Chips and salsa are offered in two sizes - small and large.  Since we're a family of 5, we bought the large.  The chips were addicting, and the salsa was yummy, and pretty spicy.

I ordered my favorite Mexican dish - Chicken Chimichanga.  It was huge!  A burrito, filled with rice, beans, cheese, and chicken, is deep fried to golden perfection.  The chicken inside the chimichanga was seasoned nicely, and each bite was full of flavor. 

My husband ordered the Burrito Grande, which was a lot smaller than my chimichanga. It was filled with chicken, cheese, and Spanish rice. He said it was okay, but felt it was underseasoned.

One of my sons opted for the Hard Shell Taco. Crispy tortillas were stuffed with ground beef, lettuce, tomato, and Monterey Jack Cheese.

My other two sons decided to get the Kids Quesadilla with Fries (also offered is Chicken Tenders). The kids meals include a drink, and kids can also opt for beans and rice instead of Fries.

The kids ate up all of their meals!

We also decided to get dessert - Mexican Fried Ice Cream.

It was delicious.  I especially liked the cinnamon-y outer tortilla shell.

Ono Loco Tacos is a small, fast-casual eatery, that opened up just last month.  They offer great food, friendly service, and I know I'll be eating the chimichanga again the next time I go.
