Sam's Delicatessen

Nat has blogged about Sam's Delicatessen before, and I've heard many others rave about the Mochiko Chicken there, so I was eager to finally give it a try!

The Mochiko Chicken was really good.  Tender pieces of mochiko-flour fried chicken were really tasty.  Each plate comes with 4 banchan / vegetables of your choice.  I got long rice, kim chee, potato, and mac salad.  Every one was delicious and flavorful.

Everyone else loved their food, and the servings were very generous for the price.  We all had leftovers for dinner!

Glad I finally got to try Sam's Delicatessen's Mochicko Chicken!

Hawaii's Best Hawaiian Mochiko Chicken Mix

Mochiko Chicken is a local favorite here in Hawaii, and it's fairly easy to make.  You can make the marinade from scratch, or you can take a short cut by using Hawaii's Best Hawaiian Mochiko Chicken Mix (available at stores in Hawaii or online).

All you need to add to the mix are two eggs, and 1/4 cup of water. That's it!

Add cubed chicken thighs (uncooked) to the marinade, and refrigerate for 20 minutes, then fry. I prefer to cut the chicken into small cubes (no larger than one inch) so that the chicken cooks quicker and all the way through.

Each bag makes up to 2 1/2 lbs of chicken. Refrigerate the leftovers for snacking on the next day!

Hawaii's Best also makes other mixes, including their signature haupia and butter mochi mixes.

Gluten Free Options at the Nook Neighborhood Bistro!

The Nook Neighborhood Bistro is widely known for their delicious mochiko chicken and mochi waffles combination.  But did you know, they could make a gluten free version?

One of my friends is allergic to gluten and asked our server if there were any gluten free options on the menu.  We were all in awe when he said they had a gluten free version of the mochiko chicken and waffles AND they have gluten free breads that they could substitute for the benedicts and sandwiches.  How awesome is that?

After we ordered, we openly discussed how the gluten free version would taste because let's face it, gluten free sometimes is just not worth the calories.  When the food arrived, the gluten free version looked exactly like the others and after a taste test, I am happy to report it is just as yummy!  We really could not tell the difference.  What a great discovery!

The Nook Neighborhood Bistro is located at 1035 University Ave in Puck’s Alley and is open Tuesday through Sunday.

Jurison's Inn - Waipahu (Waikele)

After spending some time at the Waikele Community Park with our youngest son, my husband and I decided to pick up some lunch from Jurison's Inn.
Tofu Katsu and Teri Chicken Combo

Mochiko Chicken and Meat Jun Combo
My husband ordered the Mochiko Chicken and Meat Jun, and he said everything was good.

I love the Mochiko Chicken, but I decided to try something different this time, and ordered the Tofu Katsu and Teri Chicken.  The Tofu Katsu was okay - a little on the bland side, and the Teri Chicken looked more like BBQ Chicken, but it turned out to be really tasty!

Next time I'll just stick to the Mochiko Chicken,
