teamLab Planets TOKYO

The Infinite Crystal Universe

teamLab was created in 2001 by Toshiyuki Inoko and is an international art collective with teamlab exhibitions held worldwide. On my recent trip to Tokyo, we visited teamLab Planets which opened in Toyosu in the summer of 2018. According to the founder, the goal of Planets "aimed to blur the boundaries between body and artwork by immersing visitors in massive 'Body Immersive' works of art, changing our perception of the boundaries between ourselves and the world."

We reserved our tickets online for the first time slot on a Saturday. We were told to bring shorts to change into or wear pants that could be rolled up as you will be walking in water.  teamLab Planets also rents shorts in case you are not prepared. The entire experience is spectacularly organized starting with an informational video before being sent to the humongous locker room where you can change and put away your belongings.

We went to teamLab Planets on the high recommendation of a friend because I had zero interest.  Honestly, I am happy I took the kids because I truly had a fun experience.  My teenage daughter also enjoyed it, but my 12 year old son said it wasn't for him although he waited patiently for the hour it took us to get through all the exhibits.  Overall, I definitely recommend visiting if you have the time.

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience (Now until August 15)

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience opened yesterday in Honolulu at the Hawai’i Convention Center for a limited engagement. I didn't know what to expect, but the summary on the website describes the exhibit quite accurately:

"In an imaginative and immersive presentation crafted for our unique times by world renowned audiovisual designers, Beyond Van Gogh uses cutting-edge projection technology to create an engaging journey into the world of Van Gogh. Using his dreams, his thoughts, and his words to drive the experience as a narrative, we move along projection swathed walls wrapped in light, colour, and shapes that swirl, dance and refocus into flowers, cafes and landscapes. Masterpieces, now freed from frames, come alive, appear and disappear, flow across multi-surfaces, the minutia of details titillating our heightened senses. Through his own words set to a symphonic score, we may come to a new appreciation of this tortured artist’s stunning work."

There are three rooms making up the exhibit. The first is an education room, the second room a sort of a light show that prepares the viewer for what's to come, and the third room - what we've all been waiting for - the immersion room. The entire experience takes about an hour with the last room's video lasting about 35 minutes before it loops again.

In the education room, you'll learn about Van Gogh's life through a display of biographical information on the walls. Interspersed between his life's timeline are notable quotes taken from his letters to his brother.

The second room is more of a transition room. The digital paint dancing is mesmerizing and if you stay until the end, you will see it transform into an image of Van Gogh.

The immersion room is a 35 minute show that immerses the viewer with over 300 iconic artworks including Van Gogh's classics: "The Starry Night", "Sunflowers", and "Cafe Terrace at Night". The art comes to life on the walls. It flows all around you. If you can, grab a secluded place in the room and sit on the floor to watch it unfold around you.

On your way out is a small gift shop where you can pick up merchandise with Van Gogh's iconic masterpieces.

Tickets can be purchased online here and are sold in 15 minute increments. There is special pricing for off peak (Monday thru Thursday) and peak (Friday thru Sunday, holidays) times as well as student, senior, military, and group discounts. Children 4 and under do not require a ticket. Premium tickets and VIP packages are also available.

Thank you to Honolulu Magazine for hosting my admission.

Visit Sydney - Forgotten Songs

Hidden in an alleyway, Forgotten Songs by Michael Thomas Hill, is a public artwork permanently on display showcasing 120 suspended bird cages accompanied by the sound recordings of extinct or threatened bird species of central Sydney.

The art is to celebrate those birds living in central Sydney before they were gradually forced out as a result of European settlement.  The artist’s intention was to return the bird sounds to the city.

Seeing the bird cages and hearing the forgotten songs was a somber experience, but amazing and beautiful to witness in person.  The songs of the birds change from day to night and on the ground you can read the names of the 50 affected bird species.

Visit Las Vegas: Ugo Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains

I didn’t get to visit the Seven Magic Mountains on my last trip to Las Vegas so I made sure to visit this time around.  The public art exhibition of seven colorful stacked boulders by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone opened in 2016 and was originally scheduled to be on view for 2 years.  Due to its incredible success (it was all over IG), viewing has been extended until the end of 2021.

The Seven Magic Mountains exhibit is located in the middle of the dessert, but very easy to reach.  It’s located just about 30 minutes by car from the Las Vegas Strip and there is even parking!  You can reach the exhibit on foot, but the road is unpaved so I’d recommend shoes.  Admission is free and open 24/7.

It’s not for everyone, but I loved it.  Some of the rock towers are over 30 feet high and I loved witnessing those fantastic pops of color against the stark desert.

Some of the bright towers are over 30 feet tall!
