Visit Hilo: Coco Cantina $11 Lunch Specials

Coco Cantina is one of my fave spots in Hilo for take-out lunch, and their $11 Lunch Specials Monday-Friday 11am-3pm are a great deal!
El Azteca Burrito

Pollo Burrito

Pollo Protein Bowl
My go-to is the Pollo Protein Bowl - Mexican rice, black beans, greens, chicken, pico de gallo, guac, cheese, and salsa.

It's so tasty and filling, and the chicken is tender and delicious.  It easily lasts me two meals.

I hope these specials never go away!

Seasonal Kakuni Specials at Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya

Hawaii Mom Blog was invited to try the new Seasonal Kakuni Menu at Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya.  Kakuni is a Japanese slow-braised pork and Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya is serving it up three different ways: a Kakuni Ramen featuring slow-braised pork, bok choy, green onions, a half-seasoned egg and thin noodles in the restaurant’s signature tonkotsu broth, a Kakuni Rice Bowl featuring slow-braised pork over a bed of rice and served with kimchi, green onions and a half-seasoned egg, and a Kakuni Appetizer featuring slow-braised pork, green onions and served with a half-seasoned egg.

Who doesn't love a noodle pull? The tonkotsu broth is the restaurant's signature broth.

Kakuni Rice Bowl

Kakuni Appetizer

I opted to try the Kakuni Ramen which was delicious! The kakuni was tender and flavorful which made my ramen especially tasty.  Try one of the specials today at any of Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya's three locations in Hawaii: Ala Moana, Pearlridge, and Kapolei Marketplace.

Minato Japanese Restaurant

I've always been a fan of Minato's, a small casual Japanese restaurant in Mo'ili'ili. They're only offering take-out right now, but their food is still delicious and very reasonably priced!

During lunch (10:45 am - 1:15 pm), you can get a single-item Okazu plate lunch for only $8. It includes rice, and salad.  BTW, Minato's salad dressing is delicious!  A two-item plate is $9, and a three-item plate is $11.  Craving noodles? They have noodle combos on the menu as well, starting at $10.

Okazu choices include: furikake salmon, broiled saba, chicken katsu, tempura, teriyaki chicken, spare ribs, or my all-time favorite - karaage chicken.

The karaage chicken is tasty on its own, but the ponzu dipping sauce that accompanies it makes it even more enjoyable.

Kyung's Seafood Revisited

It's been almost three years since my last visit to Kyung's for lunch. Prices have gone up a bit, but it's still a great spot for Korean food and poke in a casual, sit-down setting.

The mandoo is a must here, because they're fresh and plump.

We both ordered the BBQ chicken and poke plate. I asked for salmon poke mild. I'm not sure if she forgot to make mine mild, or this is their version of mild, but it had quite a kick to it!

My friend loved the ahi poke with masago and ogo.

Kyung's is known to be more of an evening/late night hang out, but I like to come here during the day because of the $1 off lunch special (11-3 pm all plates are $1 off)!

$7 Burger & Fries at Kahuna's Sports Bar & Grill

At Kahuna's Sports Bar & Grill at Marine Corp Base Hawaii, every Wednesday you can get a burger and fries combo for only $7!

There are six burgers to choose from, and they all sound amazing.

I tried the Mushroom and Swiss - delicious and filling.

You have the option of adding another patty for just $3 more.

Kahuna's uses potato rolls for their hamburgers buns - it's so soft and practically melts in your mouth.

If burgers aren't your thing, you can still order off their regular menu, like this classic caesar salad w/chicken.

$7 Lunch at 88 Supermarket

Can you believe this only cost $7? Yep, $7! And you could actually get more depending on how hungry you think you are.

Thanks to Frolic Hawaii, I  learned about this $7 lunch which is available at 88 Supermarket on Keeaumoku Street, Monday - Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  Here's the deal:

The line starts to the right of the buffet line. Pay the cashier $7 cash, take your paper plate and two bowls, and pile it on.  Here's what was on the buffet line today:

To the left of the buffet line was a pot of rice and two different kinds of korean soups.

According to the sign on the wall, "YOU WILL GET A FINE IF YOU THROW AWAY FOOD", so you have to be careful to take only what you can eat.

You are only allowed to go through the buffet line ONCE, so while you don't want to take too much food (because you can get fined for throwing it away), you don't want to regret not taking enough either.

Also, you are not allowed to take the food "to-go", yet there aren't a lot of tables for eating, so be prepared to sit with strangers (my friend and I ended up meeting a really nice lady who sat with us), and be prepared to eat standing up if there aren't any open seats when you get your food.

I didn't come here with high expectations, after all, it is only $7, but I was very impressed with the selection and taste of the food.  I would definitely dine here again!

Lunch at Restaurant Suntory

My family has been dining at Restaurant Suntory for years, but always for dinner (read about it here).  A few friends of mine have been telling me about how good their teppanyaki lunch special is, so I went to check it out for myself.

The teppanyaki lunch special consists of 2 pieces of california roll sushi, certified angus sirloin (4 oz), grilled vegetables, steamed rice, and miso soup for $14.50.

If you compare the price of this set to the other items on the lunch and dinner menu, you'll discover that this is great deal! It's the perfect amount of food for a mid-day meal and it won't leave you with a kanak attack in the afternoon.

Restaurant Suntory is open for lunch Mondays through Fridays from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm.

Lunch at Shokudo Japanese Restaurant & Bar

Although I've been to Shokudo Japanese Restaurant & Bar a couple of years ago to have dessert with Nat, it's been over six years (apologies for the blurry photos - thankfully my photos have improved over the years - or maybe my eyesight was really bad before?) since I've actually had a meal there.  I recently went to Shokudo to celebrate a special birthday, where the attendees all shared in family style dishes, except for the guest of honor, who is a very picky eater (pickier than I am!) and ordered a bento box.
Agedashi Tofu
"Foot-Long" Chicken Katsu

Yukari French Fries

Mochi Cheese Gratin

Lobster Dynamite

Pork Gyoza

Homemade Tofu Salad

Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice

Teriyaki Salmon Bento Box
The homemade tofu in the salad was very soft, and was nicely contrasted by the crispy wontons. The creamy sesame dressing was delish!

The katsu was good - I really liked the homemade katsu sauce, and the lobster dynamite was rich and savory. I also enjoyed the gyoza and fries, but my favorite dish, was the Mochi Cheese Gratin - mochi smothered with mozzarella and a light soy dashi broth. It was so flavorful!

There are several lunch specials available, including the bento box, which comes with rice, edamame, and miso soup.

Lunch at Shokudo was great - I loved the variety of dishes we ordered, and the service was good too!
