Blind Taste Test - Fried Chicken Edition

Our family planned out a Blind Taste Test, featuring fried chicken from four restaurants known for their fried chicken on Oahu. We all starved ourselves during the day, as we knew we were going to consume a day's worth of calories just on this!

Each restaurant was assigned a letter, and each family member was given a plate of chicken with a piece of chicken from each restaurant. Each piece of chicken (which was assigned a number) was ranked on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the best) on 3 characteristics - crispiness, taste, moist, and overall.  Then the points were added up for the total score for each chicken.

Before I reveal the contenders and overall winner, see if you can guess where the chickens were from:

Here's how they looked on our plates:

And here were the contenders:

A - KJ's Local Grinz

B - Zippy's

C - Kentucky Fried Chicken

D - Popeyes

I knew A and B were either KJ's or Zippy's, but I guessed wrong as to which one was which. But for myself, I had ranked fried chicken D (Popeyes) the highest, giving it 5s in all 3 categories, for a total score of 20.  I ranked fried chicken C (KFC) the lowest - it was not crispy at all, and it had a lot of fat on it. Perhaps if I was given a drum stick, it would have scored higher.

When all of the ballots were added up, fried chicken B - Zippy's, was the overall winner!

Would you agree? Or are there other restaurants that we should have included?

  1. I like Popeye's the best but I've never tried them side by side. I think you picked the top 4 chicken spots on Oahu. Surprisingly Safeway has some pretty good chicken too.

  2. Lately I've been getting some dry pieces from Zippys. I like Popeyes the best too.
