Leonard's Bakery

One of, if not THE most popular treat from Hawaii is the malasada. A malasada is a Portuguese confection. It's deep fried and coated with sugar. More recently, places that make malasadas have started stuffing them with cocoa, haupia (coconut), or custard.

There is a great debate on who makes the best malasadas. The one place that will always have a line of both tourists and locals is Leonard's Bakery, located in Kapahulu. Leonard's has been serving their world famous malasadas since 1952. The bakery has not undergone many changes since it first opened. The sign fronting the bakery is still the same as before, although it did receive a new paint job recently.

The building is very visible from the street. You can't miss it.

In addition to malasadas, Leonard's offers bakery items such as square cakes, brownies, and assorted cookies.

They also have pies, assorted pastries, and canned drinks for sale.

I have never tried these muffins before but they sure look tasty and moist.

One of my favorite items from Leonard's is their Pao Doce (sweet bread). They usually sell round loaves of it but now they are also offering it in squares (like dinner rolls).

If you are a big fan of malasadas, considering wearing a t-shirt with a box full of malasadas on it.

And here's what you were all waiting for - a picture of a malasada.

The malasadas are made to order so you may encounter a wait of a few minutes, but it's well worth it because malasadas are best consumed when they're warm.

Leonard's also operates mobile wagons throughout the island, where they make fresh malasadas. I've seen them at Windward Mall parking lot, the Navy Exchange Parking Lot, and Waikele parking lot.

The Old Spaghetti Factory

Earlier this month, the Old Spaghetti Factory at the Ward Warehouse rolled back their prices on their classic menu items for two days only as part of their 41st Anniversary celebration. The discounted menu was available for lunch or dinner on a first come first serve basis. I could not pass up this opportunity to get a complete meal for under $6.

Hungry customers were standing in line before their doors opened at 11:30 a.m.

For the first time, we got seated in the cable car - cool!

Our meal came with a warm loaf of sourdough bread

and a tossed green salad w/croutons

We each ordered the "Manager's Favorite". The "Manager's Favorite" allows you to choose two sauces for your pasta. Pictured here is the meat sauce and mushroom sauce

Here is their signature Mizithra Cheese and meat sauce

And here is their signature Mizithra Cheese and mushroom sauce

Each meal ends with a choice of vanilla or spumoni ice cream.

The meal also came with a beverage.

Although the 41st Anniversary menu is no longer available, look out for it next year. Maybe they will roll back the prices once again.

The Alley Restaurant Bar & Grill - Tasty Tuesday

The bowling alley is probably the last place you'd think of going for a sit-down dinner with cloth napkins and tablecloths. The Alley at Aiea Bowl is trying to change that with their Tasty Tuesday menu. One day a week (Tuesdays), patrons can come for a fine dining experience with a prix fixe menu of five courses for $39.00.You can tell which tables are reserved for Tasty Tuesday customers - they are covered with a black tablecloth, polished silverware, and the Tasty Tuesday menu.Tonight's menu started with biscuit cheese balls (which was not on the menu and not one of the 5 courses). The biscuit is crispy on the outside. The cheese is inside the biscuit.First Course: Alley Style Smoked Salmon with cream cheese on a garlic bagel chip - delicious.Second Course: Asian BBQ Lamb Riblets with coleslaw. The ribs were a little on the cold side (not sure if it's due to the coleslaw underneath which need to be kept cold) but very tasty.Third Course: Pasta Parmagiano Reggiano (linguine pasta tossed in a cheese wheel from Parma, Italy topped with prosciutto di parma and fresh basil). This dish is made right before you eyes. The chef dunks the pre-cooked linguine into a pot filled with chicken broth and butter, then placed into the cheese wheel. The heat from the noodles causes the cheese to melt onto the pasta. The chef scrapes the sides of the cheese to add more cheese to the pasta. And here's what it looks like after he tops it with prosciutto and basil.Fourth Course: Pan Seared Opah with black forbidden rice and Asian Vegetables. By then, we were all pretty full, but took a few bites of this course to see how it tasted. Very tasty.Fifth Course: Creme Brulee in a chocolate cup. Even though we were full from the previous four courses, we saved enough room for dessert. The creme brulee and chocolate complimented each other very well.In addition, you can also order select wines (red or white) by the glass or bottle, or you can order one of their trio samplers. Reservations are required. Spicy Ahi & BBQ

My girlfriends and I were planning to get together for dinner since one of our friends was visiting from San Francisco. Since they all lived on the leeward side of the island, we decided to meet somewhere close to where they lived. We decided to go to Spicy Ahi & BBQ in Pearl City. It has plenty of free parking and comfortable seating. It's also kid-friendly, which was a must for us since one of our friends ended up bringing her 2-month old (who slept through the whole meal).

When we first arrived, there was only one other table taken. But by the time we left, there were people outside waiting to get a table.

Many of the dinners come with miso soup and a bowl of salad. The salad comes without dressing since they have the different dressings on the table.

We all ordered combo dinners. For $14.95, you can select two items from a list of about 15 items - including....

Salmon

Udon (yum!)

Mochiko chicken (lightly battered, not greasy)

Chirashi (Sashimi on top of rice) and Shrimp Tempura

Broiled Salmon and Nigiri Sushi

Mochiko Chicken and Chicken Katsu

The portions are very generous and a couple of us had to ask for take-out boxes.

Spicy Ahi & BBQ is a great place to go if you're looking for Japanese cuisine in the Pearl City area.

The Cheesecake Factory

When I was going to school in the mainland, we'd often go to The Cheesecake Factory in Beverly Hills (I remember going at least one time with fellow contributor @nanigurl). Whenever I'd go to The Cheesecake Factory, I'd always order something different from their very extensive menu, and I'd NEVER order cheesecake, simply because I didn't care for cheesecake back then.

Times have changed...I don't know on which visit it was, but on one particular visit to The Cheesecake Factory, I ordered the Cajun Chicken Littles and an Oreo Cheesecake, and ever since then, I've ALWAYS ordered the Cajun Chicken Littles (except for one time--at The Cheesecake Factory in Caesars Palace--their fryer was broken so I had to order something else), and I ALWAYS order cheesecake, usually trying a different cheesecake each time.

When The Cheesecake Factory finally opened in Hawaii in 2003, I thought "it's about time!"

It's usually pretty crowded (like most Cheesecake Factory restaurants), but on this visit we went just after 11am so it was still a bit empty, and we got seated right away.

Shortly after we were seated we got some complimentary bread (sorry, no photo), and the boys got some bread slices along with some banana slices!

I ordered my usual--Cajun Chicken Littles. It's sooooo good. And they give A LOT!

DH ordered the Wasabi Crusted Ahi Tuna. He loved it and ate it all up.

Since The Cheesecake Factory doesn't have a kids menu, our server advised us of some "kid-sized" options, and we ended up getting the Kids Pepperoni Pizza.

It was HUGE! For $5.95, that was a deal! Both the boys loved the pizza!

Then it was time for dessert!

Since we were celebrating DS1's birthday, we got him a mini sundae.
And of course, I had to get cheesecake. They were offering some seasonal desserts, and I ended up ordering the Pumpkin Cheesecake.

It was nice and creamy, but I thought it tasted more like pumpkin pie than cheesecake. However, it was still good.

The service was really good, and we loved the food. I can't wait to go back and try a different cheesecake!

Sarento's Top of the "I"

This year, for our annual Christmas dinner, it was girls only (minus @incirclepets) at Sarento's Top of the "I."

It was my first time there, and I didn't hear much about the restaurant beforehand, so I didn't know what to expect.

We started off with some complimentary bread (sorry, no photo). There were two types, along with some oil and vinegar.

There was only one chicken dish--Pollo Paesano, so that's what I ordered.

Our reservations were for 5:30pm, but because of traffic (it was the day before the Honolulu Marathon), people (including myself) arrived a little late. That, combined with the rather slow service, resulted in us getting our meals after 7:00pm!

But finally, all of our meals arrived, and it was time to dig in!

The Pollo Paesano, which included chicken, pasta, meatballs, mushrooms, and peppers, wasn't that great. It cost $27, and I was quite disappointed. It was pretty bland.

These are the other girls' dinners--I don't remember what they all ordered, but I know several of them ordered the Opakapaka, which was the fresh catch of the day:

I had to leave early, so I'm not sure if the girls ordered dessert.

Although the service was friendly, there were some service mishaps.

And despite my not-so-good dinner, the view and the ambiance was truly outstanding.

The best part of all? Spending much needed girl-time with some of the best girlfriends in the world!

Ricado's Italian Restaurant

Ever since a former co-worker introduced me to Ricado's Italian Restaurant a few years ago, it became my all-time favorite Italian restaurant in the state.

Located in the Pearl Kai Shopping Center, we would often do take-out for work or go to the restaurant for special occasions. Everyone at work knew how much I loved Ricado's, and one year my Secret Santa gave me a gift certificate for Ricado's, which I used on this visit.

Every time I go to Ricado's I always order the same thing: Chicken Saltimbocca with Roasted Potatoes.

It is soooooo good! I've eaten other restaurant's chicken saltimboccas before, but I think Ricado's is the best.

DH ordered the Shrimp Alpesto. He said it was really good, and it sure looked good!

Of course the complimentary bread was good too--crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside. It was DS2's favorite part of the meal!

The service was good, the prices were reasonable, and I already can't wait for our next visit to Ricado's!
