“Lilo & Stitch” is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family. The film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Dean Fleischer Camp, with a screenplay by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes, and stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, with Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis, and introducing Maia Kealoha. “Lilo & Stitch” is produced by Jonathan Eirich, p.g.a. and Dan Lin, with Tom Peitzman, Ryan Halprin, Louie Provost, Thomas Schumacher serving as executive producers.
Lilo & Stitch has been a highly anticipated movie, not only for fans of the original animation, but for us in Hawaiʻi for obvious reasons, and we were excited to watch the live action film!
The premise of the film is the same as the animation, with various differences throughout, as my son pointed out, such as how Stitch makes his entrance on Earth and gets run over by a trolley versus a truck, how Lilo pushes a girl to the ground during a hula performance versus making everyone slip, and instead of Cobra Bubbles checking in with Nani, Lilo's sister, there is a social worker named Ms. Kekoa. He also noted how there is no Captain Gantu.
My son's favorite part of the movie was when Nani found a surfing instructor job . . . and cue Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride, performed by American Idol winner Iam Tongi and the Kamehameha School Children Chorus!
It's such a nostalgic song that so many love. Here in Hawaiʻi it just brings back so many memories to the original animated movie and how it just became a beloved song in general (one of my kids' classes performed it for May Day!).
I love that they had some Hawaiian and Pidgin spoken in the movie, and how they tried to stay true to some elements of Hawaiian culture. It was also fun that they made the movie relevant to current times, and even added references to current pop-culture (eg. Tik Tok).
Of course we loved the scenes of Hawaiʻi and seeing so many familiar spots.
The movie was comical with many light-hearted scenes, and of course there were many touching moments centered around the theme of ʻohana, which is truly significant in our local culture. Beyond our family and relatives - neighbors, friends, colleagues - we consider family.
The movie was fun and fast-paced, and Maia Kealoha's breakthrough role as Lilo made Hawaiʻi proud!
