Visit Detroit: American Coney Island

It wasn't until my visit to Michigan did I realize Coney Dogs (which is basically a hot dog topped with chili, mustard, and onions) did not originate in Coney Island - it originated in Michigan!

And in Michigan, specifically Detroit, there has been an ongoing battle for the Coney Dog throne.

One contender is American Coney Island, which happens to be right next door to another Coney Dog eatery.

American Special

Chili Cheese Fries

Coney Loose Burger

The menu is small, primarily consisting of hot dogs, chili, and a few fried items, but they know what they do best - and that is cook up hundreds of Coney Dogs a day, 24 hours a day.

One thing that really stood out was how fast we got the food, and I mean FAST!  A friendly server took our order, yelled it out to the cooks, and in just a couple minutes (not exaggerating at all), we got our food.

American Coney Island is constantly cooking up their hot dogs because of demand, so you know you'll get your food hot and quick.

Everyone enjoyed what they ordered, and it was great to experience a Michigan staple.
