Tsuki Maki - a Temaki Omakase at Upstairs Hawaii

Tsuki Maki Chef Angie Lee

Tsuki Maki, a temaki omakase prepared table side, is the first of its kind in Hawaii.  The ten course meal by Chef Angie Lee had an overwhelming response since it began in April this year.  Since then, it's been difficult to secure a reservation for one of two offered seatings of 5:30pm and 7:30pm, Thursdays through Sunday.  The popular omakase is priced at $85 per person and includes 3 dishes, 6 hand rolls, and a dessert.  Reservations for November will be announced on the Upstairs Hawaii IG account.

My friends had dined the night before so I had a sneak peek of the menu.  I enjoyed the flavors of each dish, but my favorite hand rolls were "The not so spicy Tuna Maki" and the "Dungeness Crab Maki"; the latter topped with Hokkaido uni (my favorite!).  The chawanmushi was a nice surprise as it had chunks of black cod and corn giving it a nice texture.  The meal ended on a very refreshing note with the yuzu sorbet with sake jelly - very delicious!  Best part was talking to Chef and hearing about her amazing story: she's originally from Maryland and decided to move to Japan to train in sushi making.
