Visit Big Island: Tex Drive In

Almost every time I post a picture of a malasada, a comment will appear about the malasadas from Tex Drive In.  So of course I had to put it on the itinerary!  Located on the Big Island in Honaka'a, it was about an hour drive from Hilo and gave us gorgeous views of the Hamakua Coast.

Tex Drive In offers a pretty extensive menu including breakfast, fresh salads, stews, Hawaiian plates, and so much more.  Most importantly, they offer their famous malasadas either plain or filled.

You can get your malasada filled with guava, chocolate, haupia, and more, but I went with Bavarian crème.  After a couple of bites of my veggie omelet with fried rice, I started on my malasada.  After all, we did drive an hour to try it!  It was pretty delicious.  I wouldn't say it's the best in Hawaii because it wasn't like your traditional malasada.  I thought it had a more bread-like texture and the crème was divine.  Definitely a must try if you are in the area.
