Visit Maui: Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice

I'm not a huge shave ice fan (I'll choose ice cream over shave ice any day), but when three of my favorite bloggers (Nadia, Melissa, and Olena) wrote about or personally recommended Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice, I just had to give it a try.

There are several locations on Maui.  We first went to the Kahului location, but we saw it was just a little shack with a couple of tables outside, and since it was so super hot, we decided to go to the one that we had passed by earlier in Maui Lani (Wailuku), because it was larger and most-likely had indoor seating in air conditioning.

And yes - that location did have indoor seating in air-conditioning!  If you opted to sit outside, the tables were beneath shade so you wouldn't be sitting completely out in the sun.

Once you enter, there's a sign advising of how to order in case you're new to Ululani's (like we were).

First you advise of how many shave ice orders you want, and what sizes.  You'll then be asked if you want ice cream or azuki beans, then once your "ono shave ice is pau," you tell the employee what flavors (up to 3 flavors or 1 of the recommended combinations) you want.  Then you can get a snow cap or some mochi to top off your shave ice.

Blue Raspberry, Pineapple, Cherry

Red Velvet, Lemon, Chocolate

Bubble Gum, Strawberry, Guava
We all enjoyed the shave ice.

The consistency of the shave ice is super fine, and the syrups were yummy and refreshing instead of overly sweet (the syrups consist of 100% pure cane sugar, natural fruit juices and extracts, and local ingredients).

Speaking of syrup - if the syrup didn't go all the way through, the employee told us we just needed to ask for more syrup.

I love that some of the tables have holes cut out to hold the cups of shave ice and to keep them from tipping over (shave ice holders are also available for use if you end up sitting on a table without holes).

Service was excellent. The employee who helped us was so sweet and friendly.

If you love shave ice or just want a cool, delicious treat, check out Ululani's!
