Courtyard Marriott Oahu North Shore recently launched a new bi-monthly program, Talk Story & Makeke, inviting both visitors and kamaaina to experience the vibrant traditions, talents and stories of our island home. The program is typically held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 6 to 9 p.m. in the hotel’s conference room and is free and open to the public. Program dates are subject to change.
Each evening begins with “Talk Story,” an intimate storytelling session where community members share moolelo (stories), legends and lived experiences that help keep the spirit of Polynesian culture alive. Though still in its early stages, the program has already welcomed a number of distinguished guests including respected kupuna and cultural figures such as Kumuhula Kawaikapuokalani Hewett and Kekela Miller – affectionately known as “Aunty Kela,” Courtyard’s own cultural specialist and aloha ambassador.
At another session, filmmaker and producer Steve Sue also shared a special screening of Shaka: A Story of Aloha, his documentary exploring the origins of the iconic shaka gesture, followed by an engaging Q&A with attendees. Esteemed Samoan leaders, Chief Sielu Avea and Tulafale (talking chief) Faʻamoe Avea, have also joined the lineup, offering insight into Samoan culture, customs and leadership.
Upcoming Talk Story sessions will continue to highlight local voices and cultural leaders, including:
● Wednesday, July 23: Lilia Tolefsen, COO and VP of Sales and Marketing of Gunstock Ranch.
At the same time, guests can explore the “Hauoli Makeke,” a vibrant marketplace in the hotel’s courtyard featuring handmade goods and cultural creations. Offerings include Samoan weaving, Tahitian art, locally crafted jewelry, Tongan apparel, and more from talented local artisans and entrepreneurs. Past vendors have included Hailama Designs, Koa Jewelry, MELT Massage, and Shogo’s Gift Shop.
“Our goal is to offer something meaningful not just to our guests, but to our community, neighbors and those that call this place home,” said Dave Betham, general manager of Courtyard Marriott Oahu North Shore. “Talk Story & Makeke celebrates culture, elevates local voices and creates opportunities for visitors and residents to connect through shared experiences. It helps preserve traditions while supporting local businesses and our neighbors and ohana.
Tucked away on the iconic North Shore of Oahu, the Courtyard Marriott Oahu North Shore celebrated the completion of a property-wide transformation in 2024 which included revamped lobby spaces, upgraded recreational facilities, refreshed guest rooms, and more. Among the highlights of the renovation are the addition of four new family rooms, including a king bed and two sets of twin bunk beds, catering perfectly to larger families or a group of friends vacationing together. All suites were also updated to include the addition of kitchenettes, providing even greater convenience for families and groups.
Courtyard Marriott Oahu North Shore invites families and travelers alike to embark on an unforgettable journey, where modern updates meet the warmth of aloha. For reservations and more information, visit www.marriott.com/HNLOA or call (808) 293-4900.
