Visit Island of Hawai`i: Cipriano's Kitchen

We were driving through Kawaihae, and passed Cipriano's Kitchen.   We made a u-turn since I heard great things about Cipriano's and wanted to give it a try.

Fugazza Gorgonzola

Fugazza is like a pizza, with toppings on housemade focaccia.  The focaccia was topped with Gorgonzola, mozzarella, dried figs, and prosciutto (extra).  I thought the focaccia was too chewy, and the sauce was underseasoned.  I've had a similar dish in Italy, so I knew how delicious such a dish could be, but unfortunately, I thought the Fugazza was just okay (and my friend didn't care for the dried figs on the dish).

The pork belly in the Peruvian Pork Belly Sandwich was extra crispy (like bacon), but it was very delicious.  With red onions, chili pepper water, and a secret sauce, the sandwich had some nice spice and bold flavors.

Cipriano's has a limited menu, but they offer a lot of off-menu specials.  I highly recommend getting the housemade ravioli if it's on special, because it was absolutely divine!

A special of the day was Leek Ravioli.
Leek Ravioli

You have the option to add on truffles (which we did, but turns out it was canned truffles, and we should've known with the $7 add-on charge).

The server claimed they are the only place on the island to make homemade ravioli, which I know very well is not true (I work for a chef that makes his own ravioli at our dinners, and I know many other chefs who make their own ravioli at their respective restaurants), and they charge a very high price (it was more than $35 for 3 pieces, not including the canned truffle add on).

I don't know if I would spend that kind of money again on 3 pieces of ravioli, but If you're willing to dish out the money, get the ravioli, because it really is delicious!
