HFWF Announces 2021 Localicious Recipe Contest

Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival (HFWF) announces it is accepting submissions for its 2021 Hawai‘i Gas Presents Localicious® Recipe Contest. From today through September 30, 2021, keiki are invited to submit a healthy, original recipe that incorporates locally grown, raised or caught product(s).

Open to students in grades 4-12, the contest will screen submitted recipes in two age groups (grades 4-8 and grades 9-12). The top three finalists from each age category will earn invitations to participate in a live cook-off and showcase their culinary skills at this year’s HMAA Presents Keiki in the Kitchen® on October 24, 2021. The event will be hosted by culinary personality Adam Richman and dishes will be evaluated by celebrity chefs based on criteria measuring creativity, originality, healthiness, deliciousness, affordability and the story behind the recipe.

“Inspiring the future generation of chefs, farmers, culinary entrepreneurs and more is a vital part of HFWF’s mission,” said Denise Yamaguchi, Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival co-founder and chief executive officer. “It’s exciting to see the continued success of this event. We are always amazed at the creativity and culinary skill set of our keiki chefs and watching them cook with and learn more about local ingredients is at the heart of the Festival.”

Cash scholarships totaling $600 will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in grades 9-12 and chef culinary kits will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in grades 4-8.

"This past year has reminded us about the critical role that locally-sourced agriculture plays in the future of sustainability for our island state,” said Mustafa Demirbag, Hawaiʻi Gas executive director of sales and marketing. “As we continue to recover together, we are proud to support the Hawai‘i Ag & Culinary Alliance and the Localicious® Recipe Contest that is inspiring the next generation of culinary leaders in our community.”
