Tonkatsu Tamafuji

Tenderloin plate pictured with the 3 types of rice they offer:  seasoned, multigrain, and white.

Believe the hype.  Tonkatsu Tamafuji serves up the most tender tonkatsu I have ever had in Hawaii.  Utterly delicious and the proof is in the number of people lining up well before the restaurant is open.

Tonkatsu Tamafuji has been serving tonkatsu in Hokkaido since 1952 and its first Hawaii location is on the second floor of the Hee Hing Plaza.  On our visit, we tried both the tenderloin and the shrimp.  The meals each came with a choice of rice: white, seasoned, or multigrain and choice of miso soup: white or red and with clams and green onion or tofu and seaweed.  The rice they use is amazing on its own.  On the table is picked vegetables, sesame, and spicy or sweet tonkatsu sauce.

Tamafuji is closed on Tuesdays and on the other days, they serve lunch with dinner service on the weekends.  To avoid the long lines, make a dinner reservation for the 5pm first seating or order takeout.
