Sunflowers at Waimanalo Country Farms

I've always wanted to take the kids to the sunflower fields and I finally got the chance last week.  This year was very different as it is a drive thru event, but we had a great time.  You can make a reservation here on their website (9am to 4pm).  When you check in 15 minutes prior to your reservation, you'll scan a QR code at the entrance for instructions.  Basically, you will check in and pay for your reservation before entering the farms.

The first stop where you can exit your car is at the field where the sunflowers are ready for picking.  Each fresh cut sunflower is $3, cash only.

The second stop where you can exit your car is where the sunflowers are picture ready.  There is only one entrance so I would suggest to move to the side to let people pass by so you can safely socially distance and to not cause traffic.  There is plenty of space for everyone!

As you drive out, you will turn in the form (given to you when you check in) with your lemonade orders and enjoy the drinks to go.

You will need to pay for all persons ages 3 and over in the vehicle (credit card payment at the door of $10.84 per person including tax + processing fees OR Cash payment at the door $10). Two years and under are free, but do not receive a lemonade.

Solve the Room Hawaii

Are you up for the challenge?

When Hawaii Mom Blog was invited to try out Hawaii's newest escape room, Solve the Room Hawaii, I was totally up for the challenge.  I have participated in escape rooms twice before and really enjoyed it...even when I didn't escape. There are 5 different themed rooms at Solve the Room and up to 6 people can play.  I like their 6 maximum players policy because from experience I know that too many players is not always helpful.

Solve the Room is conveniently located in the R&C tours building at 1722 Kalakaua Ave with FREE parking in their lot and are open Sunday through Saturday from 9am to 11:45pm.  Booking online is a breeze and they are currently offering promotions on their website!

Solve the Room is a great team building activity for corporate teams or just for fun with friends.  I think it would also be great for middle school and high school students as it would teach them problem solving, leadership, team work, and communication skills in a fun way.

My friends and I attempted the Black Site Prison Cell which has a 40% success rate and was very different from my other two escape room experiences.  Even though we work great together, it was a very challenging experience for us.  We had a great game-master that was very helpful when we needed a clue and we have to credit her for our last minute escape!

Thank you Solve the Room for such a fun time and the brain exercise!

Lots to keep you busy at Solve the Room!

This way to the prison cell escape room.

Feeling super smart!

Xtreme 7D Dark Rides Now Open at Ka Makana Ali`i

Xtreme 7D Dark Rides is now open in Ka Makana Ali`i!

I was already familiar with the 7D virtual reality experience from a San Francisco trip, so I knew I was in store for a lot of fun.

The 8-seat theater features several interactive games combined with a dynamic motion ride.

After guests buckle themselves in, put on their special glasses, and equip themselves with the laser gun, a practice round begins (look for the bonus objects, and don't shoot the innocent people!).

Riders immerse themselves in adventures in which they are shooting zombies, aliens, cowboys, or werewolves, while the ride simulates speeding through winding roads, falling down buildings, and zipping through space.

The rides are about 5-6 minutes long, and you'll definitely feel the rattle of the explosions and wind in your face as you battle the enemies (you can view a very brief video on my Instagram here).

It's a fast game, but it is also very exciting!

It's common for guests to buy multiple rides to experience different games - they are all unique!

A scoring system will feature guests' photos on screen from highest to lowest at the end of each game, and guests outside waiting in line for their turns will be able to watch the action on screen.

Some of the scenes can be a little scary for young ones, so don't hesitate to ask one of the employees about their recommendations.

Xtreme 7D Dark Rides is located in Ka Makana Ali‘i next to the Ultimate Foot Store and across from Rock ‘N Fun. For more information, visit xtreme7d.com.

Waimea Valley

Beautiful Waimea Falls

If you are looking for some family friendly adventure that is both fun and safe, look no further than a day at Waimea Valley!  Located in Hale'iwa, Waimea Valley's mission is to preserve and perpetuate the human, cultural and natural resources of Waimea for generations through education and stewardship.  Waimea Valley has been home to a long line of Hawaiian Chiefs and High Priests and is also a popular destination for visitors wishing to explore their world class botanical gardens and hike to the majestic Waimea Falls.

My kids and I arrived on a
Sunday morning a little after opening so the first parking lot was already full, but there was still plenty of space in the second parking lot.  When we called in the morning for waterfall swimming status, the recording stated the waterfall was flowing and there would be regular swim.  The natural rain fed 45 foot waterfall cascades into the 30 foot deep pond and swimming at the waterfall is allowed, but the status of swimming changes throughout the day depending on the weather.  Unfortunately, when we got to the admissions counter, swimming had just been cancelled due to the low flow of the waterfall.

The kids are excited to spend the day at Waimea Valley!

We didn't let this bother us since we were excited to see the botanical gardens and historical sites along the main pathway.  Although it is a paved path and mostly stroller and wheelchair friendly, there are shuttle rides available from Hale Ho'ike to the Wailele waterfall turn around area available for purchase at the ticket booth.  The hike to the waterfall is about .75 miles.  Make sure you bring water, sunblock, and bug spray because there is little shade and both my son and I got a couple of mosquito bites.

The kids enjoyed exploring the gardens of many rare and endangered plants.  Waimea's World Class Botanical Garden features 41 well defined zones, representing 5,000 different types of plants from all around the world!
One of their favorites of the day was visiting the Kauhale - ancient Hawaiian living site.

That tiny dot is Cade!

Enjoying the view of the waterfall with an ice cream sandwich followed by an afternoon bite to eat - complete with a visit from a peacock!

When we reached the waterfall, we took a break to enjoy the view.  The kids had a great time skipping small stones.  If there had been swimming that day, guests would be required to wear a provided life vest.  There are changing rooms nearby and also a snack bar (cash only) that offers drinks, snacks, shave ice, and ice cream sandwiches.

On the way back, we took the stairs down to a short path along the Kamananui Stream.  The kids really enjoyed exploring this shady area.  We ended our visit with a quick bite to eat and a visit from a peacock!

Waimea Valley is open daily 7 days a week.  They offer venues for special events and weddings.  They are also home to a farmer's market every Thursday and hold special events like moon walks and special occasion dinners and brunches.

For families, they host Lā ‘Ohana days on every 3rd Sunday of the month and offer 50% off general admission for kama'aina (Hawaii residents) and military families!  On Keiki Wednesdays, it is Free admission for kama'aina and military children ages 4-12.  They even have $10 wagon rentals for ease of navigating your family throughout the valley.

Thank you to Waimea Valley for hosting our visit!

Freedom Japanese Market - A Japanese Snack Subscription Service

Disclosure:  Complimentary products were received for review purposes.  All opinions are entirely my own.

The April Original Pack (missing 2) combined a great balance of sweet and savory snacks!

Japan is famous for their delicious snacks and it's no surprise visitors will take home with them bags and bags of their Japan favorites that they can't buy back at home.  In Hawaii, we're lucky that we have quite a few stores to purchase snacks from Japan, but we can't always get our hands on new limited editions that the Japanese love to create.

Freedom Japanese Market, a Japanese based subscription box service, provides a solution to anyone wanting original, made-in-Japan snacks delivered to their door.  A family business, their goal is to bring the Japanese snacks they love to the rest of the world.  A typical box will often include many limited edition snacks only available to the Japanese market for a limited amount of time; an English content list with color pictures; a short explanation about what Japan is like during each season; and a handmade, seasonal origami (with English explanation).

I was excited to receive my box from Japan, but was sad to discover a couple of items with pork extract were seized by the Department of Agriculture.  Otherwise, my box was overflowing with both sweet and savory snacks and it felt like Christmas when the kids went through the contents.  Some of the snacks we were familiar with, but most of the sweets were new to us.  We enjoyed it all!

I can't think of anyone that wouldn't enjoy a subscription service like this and it would make the best gift for someone that has moved away from Japan or Hawaii for that matter.  Freedom Japanese Market offers 1, 3, 6, and 12 month recurring packages that give the optimum amount of flexibility and subscriptions can be canceled at any time.  They offer 3 types of boxes: Puchi Pack $14.99 (5-8 full size and sample snacks), Original Pack $24.99 (12-16 full size and sample snacks), and Family Pack $45.99 (24-32 full size and sample snacks).  If you aren't ready to make a subscription, you can also order a sample pack of any of their packs.  All prices include shipping to anywhere in the world!

This was a super fun experience for my entire family and made my kids even more excited about our upcoming trip to Japan!

Delivered right to your door!

Box is full of snacks!
My kids loved discovering the snacks together.  Of course the best part was the taste testing!

Art Bridge Events Thursday Terrarium Tea Party!

My daughter created this beautiful "Lucky Cat" terrarium!
Last night my daughter and I attended Art Bridge Events first Thursday Terrarium Tea Party!  The hands-on DIY terrarium making was super fun and gave us some quality mommy-daughter time together.

The classes are held every Thursday at Anuenue Exquisite Tea in Kailua from 6pm-8pm, through July 2017.  At the class, you will receive 2 hours expert instruction, basic knowledge, plants, glass bubble 8" terrarium, ingredients, added toppings, helpful tips, assembly and care instructions.  Everything you need is included!  Guests also receive one choice of Anuenue Signature Tea and one specialty baked item.  The cost per person is $50.

What I loved about this class was watching my daughter's creativity flow as she created her terrarium.  I also thought it was awesome how each terrarium was so unique from each other, but they were all beautiful.  This fun event is perfect for a ladies' night out, date night, birthday, special gathering, bridal shower, creative night and family bonding.  My daughter has already requested we come back next Thursday!

Everything you need is provided!

Tiki's Family Fun Center Review + Grand Opening Specials

Tiki's Family Fun Center, located in Dole Cannery Square, is the new name of the former Rascal's Family Fun Center.  Not only is the name new, but there are new owners, offering a new experience for families.

Our family was invited for a morning of fun in this 10,000 square-foot facility.

Yes - 10,000 square feet!  The exterior is a bit deceiving, as it's hard to tell that inside Tiki's Family Fun Center are arcade games, a laser tag center, a black light mini golf course, and a mini bowling alley.

The mini bowling area has 4 lanes, and mini bowling balls are used for a quick, yet exciting, 5-frame game of bowling.

The 9-hole black-light mini golf course is pirate-themed and full of cool props and obstacles.

The laser tag facility - the only one of its kind on Oahu, is equipped with the latest in laser tag gear, and was truly a blast!

Cameras let you watch other players in action
After a morning of laser tag, mini golf, bowling, and arcade games, we all worked up an appetite!

We devoured a pepperoni pizza, along with nachos with chili (the chili was actually in bowls with rice, so we simply poured some of the chili onto the nachos).
Pizza
Nachos with chili
The cafe also offers sandwiches, corn dogs, fried rice, and more all at reasonable prices. Soon they will be offering Rita's Italian Ice!

It would be great if there were more indoor seating, but there is plenty of outdoor seating as an alternative.

The only real drawback I found about Tiki's Family Fun Center is that there are no restrooms in the facility.  You have to request a key to the men's or women's restroom (no stalls, just a single restroom for each), and the restroom is quite a far walk from Tiki's.

Despite that, Tiki's Family Fun Center is indeed a lot of fun for the entire family, and would also be a great venue for team bonding!

Tiki's Family Fun Center offers an annual membership for $35 which includes special member pricing on all activities, discounts on food, and so much more (over a $100 value).  Tiki's also offers weekly specials, as well as birthday party packages.

There are two birthday party rooms and three birthday party packages to choose from.

Service at Tiki's was great.  The attendants were all so friendly and helpful.  When my oldest son, who has an autism spectrum disorder, was hesitant about playing laser tag due to his sensitivity with blinking lights, the employees (who had no knowledge of his diagnosis) were very patient and encouraging.   When my middle son came out of mini golf crying because he didn't play as well as his older brother, another employee comforted him and got him excited for another activity.

That's the kind of place where I would want to take my family again and again - a place where not only can we have lots of fun and eat great food, but where the employees are really kind and accommodating.

I can't wait to go back to play more laser tag with the kids (and also to try Rita's Italian Ice!).

Grand Opening Specials:
Grand Opening will be September 6, 7 and 8 (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) from 3:00pm – 9:00pm. Each person will receive a free laser tag experience, a free mini golf round and 50% off food at the café.
