August Events at Blue Note Hawaii

Blue Note Hawaii, the legendary venue for live entertainment, is packed with some of the greatest entertainment from Hawaii and the mainland this month. The month kicks off with Henri Herbert: Boogie & Blues Piano Concert, followed by an impressive lineup of comedy with Comedy U every Wednesday night, the Hawaii debut of America’s Got Talent 2019 semifinalist Jackie Fabulous and the return of funny man Tumua. The 39th Annual Slack Key Guitar Festival is up next and features local award-winning artists Ledward Kaapana, Jeff Peterson, George Kuo, Kawika Kahiapo, Danny Carvalho, Kamuela Kahoano, Nathan Aweau, Dwight Kanae, Ian O’Sullivan & LT Smooth followed by the Hawaii Soul Revue with The Elevations. And for all the Chicago lovers, the Take Me Back to Chicago tour makes its way to Hawaii with Chicago co-founder Danny Seraphine for two nights only. GRAMMY®-winner Kalani Pe’a returns with a very special CD release concert followed by Imua Garza’s Opihi Pickers, one-woman band I Am Kawehi and local favorites Streetlight Cadence. We’re so lucky to have international superstar ukulele player Taimane grace the stage and the original lineup of Pure Heart featuring Jon Yamasato, Jake Shimabukuro and Lopaka Colon. It’s father and son hula night with Kuana Torres Kahele, followed by ukulele-led BEATLES cover band, Beat-Lele and MānoaDNA with the Music of the Eagles.

The month of August will also feature a special retail pop-up in the Blue Note Boutique with Kahulale`a. The pop-up runs from July 16 to August 16 with gift shop hours 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Customers do not need a ticket to shop.

Parking is validated at the OHANA East Hotel for $6 for four hours and at the Outrigger Waikiki for $15 for four hours valet.

 

Henri Herbert: Boogie & Blues Piano Concert

One of the most sought after boogie and blues players in the world, Henri Herbert, makes his Hawaii debut! Henri makes clear that this rollicking sound remains as electrifying today as it did 100 years ago when boogie and blues began its takeover of barrooms and juke joints across America.

 

Comedy U Presents Local Comedy Showcase

August 4, 11, 18, 25

Comedian Jackie Fabulous captured America’s heart as a semi-finalist on the 2019 season of America’s Got Talent. Since then Jackie’s standup has been featured on the Arsenio Hall show, Gotham Comedy Live, Last Comic Standing, Kevin Hart’s LOL Network and much more.

Tumua Tuinei has been doing comedy in Hawaii for three years working with comics like Andy Bumatai, Augie T, Pauly Shore, David Spade and headlining local venues. In 2019, Tuinei recorded and produced his first comedy special "Da Funny-Kine Special," which can be purchased and streamed through Vimeo. 

 

39th Annual Slack Key Guitar Festival - Waikiki Style

Kalani Pe‘a embodies the term “jack of all trades,” demonstrating his mastery in all genres of music. Pe‘a is among the finest of Hawaii’s musicians, earning 13 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and two GRAMMYS®, his most recent being in 2019 for his second CD, “No ‘Ane‘i (We Belong Here).”

The Opihi Pickers are one of Hawaii's most beloved ensembles, whose blend of island and contemporary music has proved a favorite with music lovers of all ages. Led by producer, composer, vocalist and ukulele virtuoso Imua Garza, the group has grown and matured over the years while keeping their original sound and style.

 

I Am Kawehi

Pure Heart

Pure Heart is a Hawaiian-contemporary trio that started as a group of friends in 1994. Even after 30 years, Jon Yamasato (guitar/vocals), Jake Shimabukuro (`ukulele) and Lopaka Colon (percussion) continue to etch out a unique sound of Hawaiian/pop/Latin/jazz that keeps audiences entertained.

It’s kāne night at Blue Note Hawaii featuring incredible Hula from father-son duos. Kuana Torres Kahele has over 25 years of professional experience in Hula and Hawaiian music, having been groomed as a child from renowned Hilo kumu, Johnny Lum Ho and Halau Ka Ua Kani Lehua.

 

Beat-Lele: Summer of Soul

August 28

Ukulele lead Beatle cover band, Beat-Lele, returns to the club to perform the entirety of the 1965 classic album, “Rubber Soul” along with other popular hits by the Fab Four. Beat-lele is composed of four Beatle-loving musicians who hail from the island of Oahu, where they have been nominated four-times for a Nā Hōkū Hanohano award.

 

ManoaDNA: The Music of The Eagles
August 29

ManoaDNA dedicates a full night to the music of The Eagles, placing their signature touch on the group's incredible catalog of hits. Mike Lewis & Friends Big Band
August 31

Local big band leader Mike Lewis presents a night of jazz standards along with  a special highlight on the works of Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
