Hospice Hawaii Seeks Little Things, Big Differences for Pediatric Patient

Hospice Hawaii is currently seeking donations for pediatric patient Peter Marquez and his family through its Little Things, Big Differences program. Donations of grocery gift cards, audiobooks and more will provide comfort and relief for the Marquez family while ensuring his needs are met.

Marquez is a 16-year-old who suffers from cardiomyopathy, heart failure, hydronephrosis and muscular dystrophy. Paralyzed from the neck down, he communicates solely through facial expressions. His declining condition has taken a toll on his mother, Aveta, who is his full-time caregiver.

“Sometimes, a small gesture of kindness from a stranger can offer a brilliant ray of comfort and consolation to patients and their families,” said Hospice Hawaii President and CEO Tori Abe Carapelho. “That’s why Hospice Hawaii created its Little Things, Big Differences program, where we share these stories in the hope that people will be moved to help in a small but meaningful way.”

Little Things that will make a Big Difference for Peter and his family include:
  • Portable DVD player and movies (Disney and superhero movies)
  • CD player and CDs (70’s and 80’s music)
  • Audiobooks
  • Grocery gift cards (Foodland and Safeway)
  • Walmart and Target gift cards
Donations can be delivered or mailed to the Hospice Hawaii office at 860 Iwilei Road. For information, call (808) 791-8067, email marketing@hospicehawaii.org or visit hospicehawaii.org/peter/.

Hospice Hawaii launched its “Little Things, Big Differences” program in 2012 to increase community awareness of Hospice Hawaii, bring awareness to the needs of Hospice Hawaii patients and their families, encourage community giving and strengthen the relationship between Hospice Hawaii and the community it serves.
