Sea Life Park Celebrates World Turtle Day with Honu Release May 23

In celebration of World Turtle Day, Sea Life Park will be honoring Hawaii’s beloved honu (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle) in an annual event with the release of two sea turtles into the ocean on Wednesday, May 23.  The release ceremony begins at 2:45 p.m. and will be open to the public. A traditional Hawaiian blessing will take place just prior to the turtle release, held at the beach across from the Park along the Kalanianaole Highway at Kaupo Bay. Additional family fun, giveaways and educational activities will take place at on the Park grounds throughout the day for guests.

In the week leading up to World Turtle Day, Sea Life Park will also solicit the public’s help online in naming two additional honu that will live at the park until they reach the appropriate size for release (when their carapace—or shell—reaches 35 cm in length) for optimal survival success in the wild. Participants are asked to comment in the section on the Sea Life Park Facebook page at Facebook.com/SeaLifeHawaii to submit their ideas beginning May 16 through May 22. These turtles can then be seen at the Park’s Discovery Reef Touch Pool on World Turtle Day from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and then again from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., with the official names for the young honu announced at 1:30 p.m.

Activities for World Turtle Day on May 23 to include:

  • 9:30 a.m. – The first 50 keiki to enter the Park will receive free turtle feed cups to watch and learn how the animals eat!
  • Noon – Meeting of the Reef Rangers keiki conservation club! All kids at the Park will have the opportunity to become official Reef Rangers and learn about protecting our precious reef ecosystems and important habitats for honu
  • 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. – Honu crafts and educational games inside the Park
  • 1:15 p.m. – Halau performance by Beach Boy Lanai
  • 1:30 p.m. – Honu names revealed at Discovery Reef Touch Pool!
  • 2:15 p.m. – Shuttle from Park to Kaupo Bay (for Park guests)
  • 2:45 p.m. – Blessing followed by the release of two turtles at Kaupo Bay (release event open to the public)

Sea Life Park’s green sea turtle breeding program has contributed to the resurgence of honu in Hawaiian waters. The breeding program has further impact through the Park’s education programs with the help of these amazing “honu ambassadors.” For more information on Sea Life Park and how to participate in World Turtle Day, please call (808) 259-2500 or visit us on Facebook.
