Calling All Keiki Artists: 2018 Localicious Hawaii Art & Poetry Contest Opens for Entry

Creative keiki will soon immerse themselves in food and imagination throughout the fourth annual Localicious Hawaii Art and Poetry Contest presented by Hawaii Gas. The statewide competition, hosted by the Hawaii Agricultural Foundation, kicked off on Monday, Oct. 2 and encourages K-8 students to learn more Hawaii-grown ingredients. This year’s theme follows “My Favorite Dish Created with Locally Grown and Raised Crop,” and stems off of the yearlong Localicious Hawaii campaign goal to raise awareness about local agriculture in our state.

“Our hopes with this contest is to encourage students to look beyond what’s on their plate and develop a better understanding of where their favorite ingredients came from and how they were grown,” shared Iris Mizuguchi, director of education programs, Hawaii Agricultural Foundation. “Cultivating opportunities for ag in the classroom to expand is imperative in improving our state’s food resiliency and guiding our youth to become the future leaders of the local farming industries.”

Student artists have the option to submit an original poem or an elaborate illustration to be entered for a chance to win a mall shopping spree (up to $100) and an exclusive class party featuring one of Hawaii’s reveled celebrity chefs. Judging categories include: Overall Winner for Poetry, Overall Winner for Artwork, Winner for Grades K-2, Winner for Grades 3-5 and Winner for Grades 6-8. Entries will be accepted until Thursday, Nov. 9 and champions will be announced by Jan. 1, 2018. At the conclusion of the contest, winning pieces will also be showcased along the halls of the historic Honolulu Hale for public viewing.

The Localicious Hawaii Art & Poetry was launched in 2014 in efforts to introduce more interactive opportunities for agriculture-focused learning in the classroom. To download the entry form and contest rules, students, parents and teachers can visit www.hawaiiagfoundation.org.
