Summer Fun at the Red Barn Farmstand

Beat the heat while learning to infuse flavor into refreshing cold soups and salads with expert chef members from Les Dames d’Escoffier Hawai‘i. The Bold & Cold Summer Soups & Salads workshop on Saturday, August 12, 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., co-hosted by the local professional women’s culinary organization, will be taught by Ka‘iulani Cowell of Ka‘iulani Spices and private chef Kathi Saks. Participants will learn how to make the most of local produce, in particular the bounty of your CSA (community-supported agriculture) subscription box. Chefs Cowell and Saks will educate attendees on how to create cold dishes, understanding the science of our taste buds and the process of what’s needed to satisfy us, even if we are serving very cold foods. Chef Saks will also conduct a hands-on vegetable-chopping knife skills demonstration. Two cold soups and two vibrant summer salads, with accompanying dressings, will be taugh, and workshop students will sample all dishes. Limited spots; reserve at www.redbarnfarmstand.com/events. $25 workshop fee includes a complimentary glass of Red Barn signature hibiscus iced tea, tasting and demonstration class, take-home dressing sample and special Red Barn gift.

Take in the gorgeous Hale‘iwa sunset while kicking back on the lawn for an evening of family-friendly fun at the new Red Barn Sunset Saturdays monthly event. Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band bring their popular Family Pau Hana event to the Barn once a month for extended hours on Saturday evenings, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Families can enjoy a menu of $10 stew, chili or curry and rice bowls and the popular Red Barn hummus dip and veggie platters, in addition to other farm-fresh food. (Admission is free, BYOB permitted.) Keiki can be free to dance, sing and get loud with Uncle Wayne and the Band. Upcoming Family Pau Hana nights with Uncle Wayne are scheduled for August 26, September 23 and October 21.

The Red Barn Farmstand, operated in partnership by Holoholo General Store and Twin Bridge Farms, is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 66-320 Kamehameha Highway, Hale‘iwa, at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and the unpaved Cane Haul Road.
