Nutella Cookies

Another super easy recipe your kids can make. My kids love Nutella so we decided to make Nutella cookies. They made it with little assistance from me. My kids also wanted to add a marshmallow in the middle of the cookie. It's a good after school snack.

Ingredients:
1 cup of Nutella
1 cup flour
1 egg
(Marshmallows are optional)

Combine all 3 ingredients. Drop a spoonful and flatten slightly on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for about 6-8 mins. Easy peasy! Enjoy!

Visit Kauai: Tip Top Cafe

I swear my then-boyfriend and now-husband and I went to Tip Top Cafe the last time we visited Kauai (over 10 years ago) based on the recommendation of my former co-worker (who used to commute to Honolulu from Lihue daily).  When I asked my former co-worker for an updated list of recommendations for our recent visit, Tip Top Cafe was still on his list, so we decided to stop there for a late breakfast upon our arrival in Lihue (and maybe it would jog my husband's memory).

Tip Top Cafe is adjacent to Tip Top Motel - who knew a motel cafe would become one of Kauai's most popular dining spots?

We were lucky to get seated immediately - it was a pretty full house, and remained that way the entire time we were there.

We put in our orders, and I couldn't believe how quickly the food came!

Banana Pancake

Loco Moco

Macadamia Nut Pancake
Pancake

Smoked Bacon Omelet with Hash Browns

I ordered the Smoked Bacon Omelet, which also had green onions and tomatoes.  It seemed to have a lot more green onions and tomatoes than bacon, but it was still delicious and satisfying.

My kids loved the Pancakes, and my husband ate up his Loco Moco.

They also have a bakery, which offers a variety of baked goods - perfect for omiyage!

Service was fast and friendly, and it's the perfect spot for breakfast or lunch (if you love oxtail soup, my former co-worker highly recommends it - it's available all day!).
Omiyage!

My husband still doesn't remember going there after this visit, but at least I now have this blog as proof!

Mililani Bar-B-Q

Often times when I go to the Town Center of Mililani, I notice a line at Mililani Bar-B-Q, so I was eager to try out their food.

Chicken Katsu

Fried Mandoo

Meat Jun and BBQ Chicken Mixed Plate

Kim Chee Fried Rice
Our family ordered several lunch plates to share.

The Fried Mandoo was huge and delicious, and the BBQ Chicken was my favorite dish.

My kids ate up the Chicken Katsu, and I enjoyed the Kim Chee Fried Rice, which was pretty spicy, yet full of flavor.

I thought portion sizes for the price were small compared to other plate lunch restaurants, but overall the food was tasty, and now I know why Mililani Bar-B-Q is often so busy!

Laka Skin Care and Spa

It's been a self-made birthday tradition of mine to have lunch with my family and then take off for a relaxing massage.  Not just any massage, but 90 minutes of pure bliss at Laka Skin Care and Spa.  I've been a fan of the spa, a hidden gem located on Ward, for three years now and it's in my top 3 spas that I recommend to anyone that asks.

Why celebrate with a massage?  Because it's the only true "me" time and you deserve some.  For the duration of your massage, the therapist will focus on just you and your needs.  I love spending time with my family on my birthday, but I also think it's important to treat myself to a little bit of relaxation without them too.  I'm pretty sure they agree when they are greeted with the version of me that is recharged and refreshed.

When you enter Laka Skin Care and Spa, you will be greeted and taken to a small changing room.  You can leave your valuables in a locker and hold the key with you.  Then you will be escorted to a waiting area with comfy oversized chairs to begin relaxing.  My massage therapist, Tiffany, arrived shortly to take me to the treatment room.  After we talked specifics about areas that were bothering me or any concerns I had, she left me to get settled on the massage table.  During the massage, she made sure to check with me how I liked the pressure.  I used to be too intimidated to speak up, but now I know that if I don't want to be disappointed, I better say something if I'm not happy.

Tiffany was awesome!  She delivered just the right amount of pressure and worked her magic over my tired back and body.  The peppermint aromatherapy oils were both soothing and rejuvenating.  I liked that she used hot towels on my hands and feet at the end so there was no oily residue.

After my amazing massage, I was led to their private dining table where I enjoyed water, peach tea, and their famous black sesame ice cream.  You too, will have to restrain yourself from asking for more ice cream.

Laka offers a variety of services and have both male and female massage therapists on staff.  Other spa services include facials, scalp care, and spa packages.  Guests will be happy to know that Laka offers a loyalty rewards program that give members special pricing.

Service here is excellent and on point.  Life can get hectic and Laka strives to be the solution by providing their guests a healthy balance of body, mind and spirit.

Laka offers a variety of massages from deep tissue to prenatal.

Private dining area is perfect for spa day parties and showers.

The icing on the cake!  Delicious black sesame ice cream and peach tea to top a perfect spa day.

Thank you to Laka Skin Care and Spa for the complimentary birthday massage.  All gratuities were paid on my own.  All opinions are entirely my own.

About The Originals The Complete Second Season

As Original vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson returned to the vibrant, supernaturally charged city of New Orleans in season one, he was stunned to learn — along with his siblings Elijah and Rebekah — that Hayley, a werewolf, was pregnant with his child, and his vampire protégé, Marcel, whom the Original siblings had thought long dead, was ruling the French Quarter. Soon, a bloody war escalated between vampires and witches — the stakes raised by powerful teenage witch Davina and by Klaus’s bond with Cami, a student with a painful past — and a ruthless pack of wolves seized the opportunity to stage a violent coup. Now, in season two, a new status quo must be adjusted to, as the newly empowered werewolves control the city. Klaus struggles with weaknesses as Elijah desperately tries to save Hayley — now a hybrid — from a vicious spiral of self-destruction. Meanwhile, with the re-emergence of several Mikaelsons, “family is power” takes on new meaning.

Fishing Fun with the Family at Ali`i Agriculture Farms

My kids have been asking to go fishing for a long time now, but my husband and I were deterred by the thought of having to invest in fishing gear that my kids may only use once.

However, one evening I met the folks behind RAgrinds at an event, and they told me how they had recently gone to Ali`i Agriculture Farms in Wahiawa, where people can rent poles and bait, and could buy the fish that are caught and have them cooked up - all right on the farm!

Our family had actually driven past the sign for the recreational fishing at Ali`i Agriculture Farms many times on the way to the North Shore, but it wasn't until RAgrinds gave me more information did I actually become excited about taking the kids fishing - no poles or bait to buy!

I told my friend about Ali`i Agriculture Farms, and she also thought it would be a great place to take her kids, so we met there this past Saturday.

We arrived at Ali`i Agriculture Farms just after 11am, and there were at least a dozen or so families already there (the farm is open 10am to 5pm daily).

Although the farm has been under the ownership of "TC" and his family for several years now (they grow sod and raise pigs), it was only four months ago that they opened up the recreational fishing ponds which are full of tilapia, grass carp, and catfish, and it has been drawing steadily increasing crowds ever since.

We proceeded to the quaint fishing shack, where we signed a release of liability waiver, and got our poles and special bait made with secret ingredients.  ($15 for pole and bait; 4 hour maximum; personal poles/bait not allowed).

Special Bait

We then proceeded to pond B (there are 3 ponds which alternate in use), found our spot, put bait on all of the fishing poles, and waited...

It wasn't very long before the first fish was caught!  From the time we put bait on until we pulled up the first tilapia, only 10 minutes had passed.

The first of over a dozen fish caught!
We were catching fish every few minutes - releasing the little ones, and keeping the big ones.

Ali`i Agriculture Farm provides a bucket for you to store any fish you want to keep.  Simply fill it up with pond water, place your fish in, and be sure to bring a towel so you can cover the bucket because they can easily jump out of it!

In about 90 minutes we caught over a dozen fish (all tilapia and in all sorts of colors), and there were also several that escaped off the hook on their own just as we pulled up the pole.

A nice size tilapia!
Another big one!
We threw back the little ones
To assist you during fishing, it's also recommended that you bring gloves (not only because the fish are slippery, but also because some of the fins are spiny) and pliers to get the hooks out of the fish.

After 90 minutes of fishing fun we were ready to eat.  We kept a total of 3 tilapia.  The fish get weighed and can be bought (currently $4/lb for tilapia, normal price is $6/lb; prices higher for catfish or carp), and if you're there on a Saturday, the fish can be cooked on-site for $6/fish at the Ali`i Corner food truck (owner TC does the cooking).

We ordered Sweet & Sour Fish, Black Bean Fish, and Sweet Chili Fish.  Our friend also ordered a simple Salt & Pepper fish, which TC recommended for kids in case they don't like any of the sauces.

Sweet Chili
Black Bean

Salt & Pepper (Our friends' fish - they cooked up 3 fish as well)
There are tents and tables that you can eat your freshly prepared fish at, and you can also eat any food and drink that you bring to the farm (no eating by the ponds).  The farm and food truck also sells items like musubi, chicken nuggets, French fries, ice cream, candy bars, and cans of juice.

My favorite style of fish was the one with the Black Bean sauce (my husband liked that one the best as well).

The ponds are surrounded by red dirt, and by the time you leave you will be covered in red dirt, so be sure to dress in clothes you wouldn't mind getting dirty.  Don't forget to bring chairs, and also bring wipes to clean your hands before eating your just-caught fish (sanitizer just won't do - your hands will still be covered in red dirt even after using hand sanitizer).

It was a super fun day at Ali`i Agriculture Farms.  I really did not expect to have so much fun, but it was exciting to catch so many fish!  The looks on my kids' faces each time we pulled out a fish were priceless.  The excitement never died down, regardless of how many fish we caught, and we are eager to go back - and maybe catch a carp or catfish the next time!

This family-owned operation is a welcome addition to Central Oahu - such a great place to take the family!
